I think current is more thematically interesting to be honest. Here's a quality upgrade:

Which does bring us back to the "is it a bug or a watermark" conversation re the Marvel stripe.
As they've specifically added this to some (not all) images on the website, I've always viewed it as a watermark, but I don't think we've ever formally settled that.
I'd argue it's closer to a channel bug when its placed there by the company that owns it. Heck it's closer to an artist signature than anything else. It's not like when a fansite trys to slap a watermark on a screencap or something.

Marvel's status as owner can be a bit of a red herring, though. Almost by definition, watermarks are claiming some sort of ownership.
Plenty of them are added by the company or artist that initially created the image, and that doesn't mean we take them any less seriously.

To me it looks more like an embedded caption or "signature", as stated above. It doesn't interfere with viewing the image; it merely establishes identity and ownership, which is not a problem for Fair Use. That said, it's always preferable to use images without such marks, if possible. (Cropping them out is no bueno.)
