Just What Is an "Enforced Trope"

I think Creativity Leash and Real Life Writes the Plot are both kind of already the indexes that Enforced-Trope-as-index would be?

There seems to be a lot of duplication and unclear boundaries

This is the sort of thing that made me skeptical about the idea of retooling Enforced Trope into, well... anything other than some random Word of God-based trivia item.

Yeah, I agree. There seems to be no room left for Enforced Trope.

If all the bases seem covered, what if Enforced Trope — as the familiar, probably-most-used name — is just turned into a disambig page? The page would list all these other things we've found (after we try to iron them out, clean up the duplicates, clarify the definitions, etc.)

We would have to wait for TRS to do that. In the meantime, we should add it as a solution in the TRS queue

Anyone can change the TRS entry — I don't claim ownership of it. I just took the initiative to create it because I thought we should get on the queue as soon as possible, with how long it takes.

Started Enforced Trope to gather all the related tropes anyone can find

If that's the case, I'll go ahead and add more stuff to the OP in the TRS queue.

Okay, I went through the trope history again and it turns out that the behind-the-scenes part of the description was added in 2018 by another troper seemingly unilaterally. This troper also added a bunch of other stuff to the description:

I might come back to this thread later to contribute to the discussion more thoroughly, but I noticed that the ways of Playing with a Trope were unilaterally re-added to the Trope Tropes page by StarSword even though this TRS thread agreed to remove them in favor of having a link to the Playing with a Trope sub-index in a floatbox to reduce redundancy (since it was determined that they only needed to be listed on one of the two pages), and I saw that the difference between what the two pages said was causing confusion in addition to the unilateral changes to Enforced Trope's own page causing confusion. I reverted the Trope Tropes page back to how it was when the TRS thread was completed, since the only edits made since then were to these bullet points.

Yeah, sorry about that, I didn't know that was a TRS decision and should have checked around before I did that. Honest mistake based on what appeared to me at the time to be a simple oversight.

Curious question: if Enforced Trope is made Trivia, does that mean we'll have to remove it from every single Playing With page that features it? Cuz there are quite a lot of those.

I mean... yes, yes it would. But it barely qualifies for those pages as-is.

Where does The Colored Cross belong? In majority of cases, this trope is not used because the creators want it to be used.

They’re probably saying it should be Trivia due to resulting from a real-world restriction. (Even if that logic is faulty, that’s what I think is being said).

They are saying that most examples of The Colored Cross are technically Enforced and possibly not Straight due to Red Cross being copyrighted.

I think it's incorrect to say that "Straight" and "Enforced" are different concepts. A trope being enforced doesn't alter how it's used in the work, which is why I'm not convinced it belongs under Playing With.

Basically which of the indices is about being restricted by something due to laws and international regulations? Creativity Leash?

I don't think we currently have an index for that, but I could be wrong.

I don't know how this site works on the technical end, but it seems to me that it would be pretty simple to write a Regex statement to select the Enforced Trope listings on Playing With pages. Is automating that on the table?

I think it would make sense for tropes that are usually Enforced — like The Colored Cross and Rubber-Forehead Aliens — to be indexed together somehow.

The two indexes we have at the moment are Creativity Leash and Real Life Writes the Plot. I don't have a strong stance on whether they're good enough as is, or should be reorganized somehow.

There's no way of automating it except the user doing it themselves. And when it comes to scripting edits, messing up can warrant a suspension, so it better work as intended.
