General Media Categories Discussion

Go To

Inspired by and spinning off this thread, this is a general thread for Media Categories on this wiki.

Continuing a discussion from that thread, what media category should Manhwa and Manhua go under? They're usually lumped in with Anime & Manga, but that media category is specifcally for Japanese animation and comics. So I'd suggest either giving them their own media category of either "Eastern Comics", Manhwa and Manhua get their own individual media category, or we just put them under the general Comic Books.

Yeah, I think having their own folder would be nice. I wonder if it would really be too much of a hassle to change the way the folders are organized.

From the options I support most to least:

  1. Make a "Manhua/Manhwa" folder
  2. Lump them with "Comic Books"
  3. Make an "Eastern Comics" folder

The reason why I pick "Eastern" last is because, from my experience of crosswicking Malaysian animated shows, there's apparently confusion on what the folder they go in should be named. More context  It's relevant, but likely a whole other conversation/discussion altogether.
Considering that the suggestion for an "Eastern Comics" folder is based on the existence of "Eastern Animation" folders, I think it needs to be clarified (region/country wise) where "Eastern" spans to. (Sometimes I see Eastern European Animation lumped in "Eastern Animation" too.)

EDIT: Oh wait, I was talking all about folders on trope pages but this is about Media Categories. But it looks like that's the basis of most folders, unless I'm mistaken? I still stand with my options.

[up] The names of folders on trope pages are media categories, so you're on topic.

Btw, somewhat related, but is anyone fine with me moving the Manhwa and Manhua folders in Summary.Anime And Manga to Summary.Comic Books?

I feel like they'd fit the latter subpage more, because they're Korean and Chinese comics, not Japanese.

How many of them are there? Maybe they could be moved to their own

If not then the physical ones can go in comic books and the digital ones can go in webcomics

Awesome, new discussion time

So about stuff in the animation namespace

What folder do we use

[up] I think just "Animation" for now, but let's get back to Manhwa and Manhua. We can debate what to do with animation after.

I like BlackFaith's options

Though I'll also throw in

"Asian Comics (excluding Manga)"

I support this the least though because Trese and After Eden are also Asian comics due to being Filipino Media, but are just Comic Book/

I think we can maybe gather up options now. Mostly what Black Faith stated plus a few more.

I propose either

Two seperate folders

One manhua and manhwa folder

Or as I mentioned with the summary page, splitting em between comic books and webcomics. Tho I do have hangups about the former part

[up] I like the latter option. Mostly because I find seperating Manhwa and Manhua from just Comic Books to be pointless, so I'd be fine with putting them into the same category as Comic Books in general.

Either way, we've got several options now.

Here are the (draft) options for what to do with the Media Categories for Manhua and Manhwa:

  • Give Manhua and Manhwa their own separate folders/media category in trope lists. Manhua gets a "Manhua" folder and Manhwa gets a "Manhwa" folder.
  • Lump both Manhua and Manhwa into "Comic Books" and "Webcomics" folders/media categories.
  • Make an "Eastern Comics" folder/media category and place both Manhua and Manhwa in said folder/media category.
  • Make an "Asian Comics (excluding Manga)" folder/media category and place Manhua and Manhwa in said folder/media category.

Anyone want to tweek the options or at least add any more. Shorten it.

If you wanted my personal vote

I'm mostly supportive of just giving these two their own folders. But I'm equally as good just merging them into Comic Books/Webcomics.

Ditto here

Either merge em into other folders

Or if I had to pick one

Let them have seperate folders, they take up seperate namespaces and are less intertwined than anime and manga

I've spun off the Manhwa and Manhua discussion into a separate thread

I'll leave this thread to be about general media category questions.

Since this thread exists, let's tackle the animated mammoth in the room...

The one media category that is very inconsistent is "Films — Animated" or "Films — Animation". (Not to mention there's debate whether "Films" should have an S.)

I know the administrivia page favors "Films — Animation", but whenever a folder is too big and results into a supbpage, those are constantly called "Animated Films". And I don't see an uniformization effort leaning toward moving those subpages.

Though my guess as to why that happened was because in trope lists, if you're looking for a trope example from a film, you'd search the page in a specific area

So your first thought is looking for "Films", then of course you consider "animated" or "live-action" (hybrid movies are a special case depending on which medium is more prominent in the work).

So that's why it's

Films — Animation

and

Films — Live-Action

In subpages however, you can get away with using Live-Action Films and Animated Films because they're a far more intuitive sounding in terms of functioning as a namespace

We originally had "Film" and "Western Animation" folders, and confusion resulted as to which folder animated films go in with some tropers doing both. Because they're in the Western Animation namespace that folder was probably more correct, but the solution we eventually hit on was, essentially, to have two film folders. (This was probably because the period where we were still TV Tropes was still in recent memory.)
