So I had been doing some Wiki walking around here and started poking around in The Jerk Index and I had an idea bouncing around in my head. It’s a little complicated so I wanted to get everything straight and get some help refining it.

I’ve been wanting to play around with a specific subversion of the Spoiled Brat to make them more rounded and sympathetic. The starting point is someone whose natural “default” personality is actually quite nice, however they’ve been messed up by a distant, emotionally abusive parental figure who gives them whatever they want as a replacement for actual affection but even then only when they behave according to their exacting parental demands. The parental figure also fits the typical description of the spoiled arguably much better than their child, being ruthless and demanding over what they want. This introduces a conflicted condition in the character, where they’ve been pistol-whipped into submissiveness and hate being mean but have been taught that being aggressive and bratty is the only way to get what they want.

The end result is something of a Sour Outside, Sad Inside Paper Tiger where the “sour” aspect is less a part of their actual personality and more of a rather thin facade to not look like a weenie and be taken seriously when they want something. Seeing their facade backfire or be met with resistance will make them revert back to their more timid self, and an especially aggressive “no” will turn them into a quivering mess (think something like Miu Iruma from Danganronpa V3 for this type of regressive response). All in all, they’re just a lonely and affection-starved rich kid trying (and somewhat failing) to maintain an “assertive” image and hates every second of it.

Is this decent? Does this make sense? If not, why? Feel free to provide feedback and yell at me if I’ve made dumb decisions!

It makes sense, it's actually a trope I think I've seen before or at least variations on the concept. A lot of jerkass rich characters for example turn out to be Trophy Children who are seen more as their parents tools than as people, and so they adopt an asshole persona to survive.

Sounds like monumentally messed up character who needs therapy. But the rationale seems sound.
