[up] To clarify, I want one post per valid report. If someone sends up Sailor Moon, obviously we don't need a thread, but cluttering doesn't phase me that much. It looks much more transparent than the gridlock happening now as well - hard to argue P5 isn't functioning when you can see the results.

EDIT: I also think we've seen from the current system that a megathread no longer suits the needs of this project and is not helping clear the queue.

Seems like one way to do this would be to have each report create a thread in this forum, TRS-fashion, and automatically send a holler so that a moderator can deal with a frivolous report. I would probably prefer that the thread be unlocked from the start so that it's easier to distinguish finished business from unfinished one, though.

That would leave all the old reports, but I believe we can handle them by manually making threads for each.

Why isn't there a Morgue for this?

[up] There should be a morgue containing all the locked 5P threads from 2012, as well as any resolved threads from if and when we start the thread system.

There is no morgue for this because nobody created one.

Anyhow, what do folks think of having each report create a new thread-cum-holler in this forum?

I think for ease of development, the "Report a Page" button should direct to this subforum, and you would report via the "Create Thread" button. The creation would automatically send a holler so the mods could review.

I also wouldn't mind keeping DrPsyche and the other P5 members around to review new threads.

[up][up] Sure, that works.

[up] Hm, I think it'd be better to have some more details with it. We've already had issues with current system that overlaps general "report to mods" and specific "report for porn" functions being toggleable from the same form. Users would send things in for content violations with no idea what actual rules that option meant.

Maybe replace the "this may violate content policy" with something like "If you suspect this page is about a pornographic or pedo-pandering work, go [here] to report it. More details on what we mean by those definitions are available [here]." ?

^^I think changing the reporting tool in this manner would make it much harder for its users. No, I think I am going to insist that the admins do the whole "report with 5P toggle checked produces same result as creating a thread" work instead of half things.

So, in summary, we're getting rid of the existing tool and angel/devilheads, in favor of a reporting tool that automatically makes a new thread in this forum, which will be locked until a mod unlocks it. We'll then discuss each work in its thread. No crowners; voting will be done by thumbs (unless the admins want to put in angel/devilhead smileys that we can use).note  The P5 will be retired.

My only remaining question is, what threshold are we going to use to doom a work? A majority or two-thirds?

Anything I missed or got wrong?

I would say we shouldn’t do a voting system at all. People rarely read all about what they are voting for and just will vote down anything and everything.

I am not so sure that we've settled on the technical details, but Ramidel's summary is kind of what I have in mind. I'll probably also ask that the devil and angel icons be added to the buttons

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Devil-3-icon_2608.png https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/angel_icon_mo_011_3865.jpg

A numerical threshold for consensus isn't the only way to do this. I could imagine that during a discussion, folks make their arguments and the closing 5P member reads these arguments and determines which one are well-informed and which ones aren't, and proposes a disposition on this basis.

In that case we could actually keep the 5P around, but it wouldn't be a formal user right anymore. Instead, "5P" would be the people who the staff trusts to make the final determination.

I like that summary. It's simple and still has moderator oversight. Additionally, it means that the P5 (or P10, P7...) can be rotated in and out more frequently if necessary.

Anyhow, anyone opposed to the technical aspects of this summary?

To be clear, by "technical aspects" are you only referring to this part? Because this part sounds good to me, but I'm iffy on the part after that.

Ah, okay. This is what I envision it would look like, made with inspect element. I suppose it is time for the 5P to go, after all.

Say, what happens with the current 5P page? Will it be converted to an archive entry and written in past tense?

retrospective addition: Doesn't sending a holler add a post to a thread?
Wouldn't it be easier for the admins to cannibalize the already-existing code rather than work it from scratch?

Seems like we are developing here a consensus on the technical aspects. I'll formulate a to-do list for the admins:

  • Make it so that sending a report through the sidebar with the content policy checkbox checked makes a new thread in this forum.
  • The new thread needs to be locked and send a holler upon creation, akin to the TRS and IP fora but without a limit on the number of threads.
  • This report system would remain visible, but it wouldn't do anything.
  • Perhaps we should also allow threads there to have page links similar to how TRS and IP automatically create a link to the page. And moderators should be able to assign the orange "pending final" action star to threads.

Steps that don't need the admins would be:

Non-policy wise the idea so far is that each work is discussed in a dedicated thread and decisions based on a thread consensus, with the following rules:

  • This isn't a headcount. Your opinion is only considered if it explains in at least some detail how you came to the conclusion that the work is/is not porn/paedopandering.
  • When a moderator or 5P member determines that the discussion has yielded a consensus, they can enact its conclusion/ask a moderator to enact the conclusion.
  • The discussion is only about whether the work qualifies as porn or as paedopandering. We don't assess anything else in this process.
