Dedicated thread for the HBO Max release of Zack Snyder's Justice League, a reimagining of the footage used to create the 2017 theatrical Justice League movie. The official synopsis:

In Zack Snyder's Justice League, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher), and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, De Saad, and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.

Much of the information of how this movie exists and what it will entail is on those media pages, but here's a primer:

  • Zack Snyder filmed the principle photography in 2016 and several months of post-production before leaving the project after a family tragedy. Ballpark figures for the intended running time was around 2 1/2 hours, but early cuts were clocking in over three hours.
  • Joss Whedon was assigned to complete the film, but was given a mandate to trim it down to 2 hours exactly. They banked on extensive reshoots to attempt to streamline the story but also bring it in line with tonal changes requested by the current studio heads (estimations range from 20-40% of the movie was remade this way, depending on how you calculate it).
  • Recognizing the massive amounts of footage cut, as a lot more was promised in press releases and hinted at in the trailers, a fan campaign #ReleaseTheSnyderCut was able to make enough noise to catch the attention of Warner Media, who bankrolled restarting production from where Snyder left off.
  • Without the runtime needs for a casual theatrical release and looking to justify the money spent, the total runtime will be about 4 hours.

I will say that there has been a history of threads about Snyder's DC movies being locked due to infighting. Let's hope this thread can stay civil and productive, at the very least we can pull that conversation away from the general DC Movies thread.

Like I said, this pulls the conversation away from existing threads.
