A lot of Japanese companies do that, where they seem to expect their attempts to go Western to do frankly insane numbers.

Capcom and Konami did it like five times each, because they kept outsourcing to (mostly) small European developers and somehow expecting that to be the secret to getting huge international sales. Only really worked once and even then, it was still in the realm of “huh, those are pretty good numbers” and not “GIANT MONSTER HIT”.

So a while back, there was a discussion over Saudi Arabia banning FF XVI over it having gay content while some tried to argue it was because of heterosexual nudity.

Turns out there actually IS a gay character. Who actually has an on-camera kiss with his male lover.

Very funny that once again the Bahamut representative is the gay one, after XIII was utterly dripping with subtext about Bahamut's champion Fang being an item with Vanille.

I think it's straight up that Saudi Arabia is not a reliable market for anything in the entertainment sphere. It has a low population and the Middle East in general is difficult to market anything to and has a ton of random things that'll get prominent people calling out whatever new thing comes out. So it's easier to just not pay attention to it because catering to the Middle Eastern market means alienating almost everywhere else.

Saudi Arabia has been super ban-happy for decades now, to the point that no one cares about making them happy by censoring anything on the production end because they'll just ban it anyway.

Its odd Saudi Arabia investors are becoming bigger parts of the gaming industry with investments or outright owning majorities but are so conservative, a good chunk of games they help produce is banned.

Thank goodness that companies or Arabia themselves are forcing the toning of progressive values in the product down, though I think the latter will try one day when they get more influence.

I'm seeing some people in the fandom pushing for Bahamut to be some kind of LGBTQ+ icon in the FF Fandoms.

Interesting observation.

That too, the crown wants the country to be a gaming hub yet entertainment and censorship are not a good combo.

I have some friends in Saudi who are really annoyed at the Government for banning the game.

Yeah, the notoriously centrist Disney had no problem jettisoning the Saudi audience over its opposition to the fairly flimsy gay content in Doctor Strange 2 and Eternals. It's a demographic they can easily afford to lose.

On that note, I'm reminded of how Disney cut a lesbian kiss in Rise of Skywalker for Singapore.

Singapore also only occasionally demands certain small cuts for their own market. They don't say a thing about the versions for other markets. Saudi Arabia tends to demand cuts at the source.

Overall, corporations are motivated very strongly by profit rather than altruism, though I would say one should consider it not mutually exclusive.

With businesses I'd say ideology should be thought of less as their goals and more the worldview that acts as a lens when shaping strategy.

A "progressive" company is one that sees the LGBT movement as something that's clearly here to stay, a demographic they can profit off of, and something they can use to create good press for their company. This isn't pure grift but it's not like they're activists.

Overall, I would say that they're not terribly reliable but they can be helpful from time to time.

I think companies realize the demands of people to censor the games wont even play the games ever. Probably because they are ragebaited by youtube commentators or think its already “tainted” or something.

Except when its government heads banning it from a market, which is dick move though the market wasnt that worth jt if you got to put so many concessions that wreck the vitality of your product.

Also, the size of the market matters. By which I mean China.

I despise hypocrisy, unless of course it is my own.

China market is kinda screwed now ever since they basically put the parental timer on any game. They had potential to be a giant market but not did the CCP shoot the audience but the devs so hard, many are trying to move HQ elsewhere.
