Note: The thread currently has a limit of one post every two hours for non-mod users. Currently, this is hard-coded by the admins, but there are plans to give mods the ability to toggle it without admin intervention. After mods are given the ability to do that, the time limit may be further reduced or removed entirely.

- Questions and clarifications about the site's rules and policies pertaining to wiki editing, forum posting, trope launching, and so on.
- If you have an idea for a thread on another part of the forums but aren't sure if creating it would be allowed, feel free to ask here.
This thread is not for any of the following:
- Reporting complaints or concerns about specific moderation decisions (e.g. suspensions and thumps). Report these directly to the admins via the contact form
. Selecting "The Staff" sends your message to the admins only, without making it visible to moderators.
- Queries about thumps applied to your own forum posts (reply to the relevant moderator via PM).
- Ban appeals (use the "Edit Banned" thread in this forum).
- Reporting problems or requesting moderator action in the wiki or forums (use Ask The Tropers or Hollersnote or specialized threads such as "Locked Pages").
- Queries about locked On-Topic Conversations (OTC) threads or banned discussion topics. OTC has its own moderation discussion thread here, and the latest statement on the locked US Politics thread and other banned OTC topics is here. Bluntly, when certain OTC threads and topics have repeatedly caused problems, we're not going to provide forum space to discuss them again until the moderation toolkit is equipped to handle those conversations.
- Cut List challenges and queries (they have their own thread here).
- Requests for changes to the site's code or discussion about such changes', as mods cannot change the code; only the admins can do that. Please direct tech requests to Query Bugs or Query Wishlist, and take other tech-related discussion to the Changelog thread.
- Crowner actions. Please use the holler function instead.
- Discussion about changing or implementing policies. Please use Wiki Talk for that. (Asking whether it's OK to make a specific thread is acceptable; using this thread in place of such a thread is not.)
- Asking about the whereabouts of inactive mods (or other inactive users) before they return, if they return at all. Use the Absent people thread for discussing inactive users.
Posts that use this thread in place of the sections listed in the bulleted list above are off-topic.
We're aware that the Edit Banned thread has a Non-Indicative Name, due to it also covering non-editing suspensions. We're not sure whether the name for that thread can even be edited without breaking the special coding that keeps posting restricted to mods and suspended users, so we're leaving it alone for now, because better safe than sorry.

You seem to have missed the mod post right above yours saying that due to technical difficulties they can’t go to the edit banned thread.
I do think it might have been simpler to just set up a one-use thread for the requests, but it’s not like this thread is that active.

I'm sorry about the issue with Edit-banned. It sadly happens when we only block specific subforums. Thankfully, Septimus was prepared in advance and gave you all the correct instructions.
In the interest of fairness, I have removed the Yack Fest bans from everyone who posted here. Anyone else involved in the incident will also have to post if they would like to be released. My original ruling still stands and you can appeal the Forum Games ban in three months.

Well, that's one more technical issue to add to the list of issues for the admins to fix. If even certain banned users are unable to appeal in Edit Banned because of one oversight of the ban system, it could cause misunderstandings.

At a technical level it's fairly straightforward. We have restraints that we can apply on general areas of the site, like the wiki, PMs, reviews, forums, certain groups of forums, and so on. Then we have a separate restraint system that applies to individual forums. Only the first system is hooked up to Edit Banned.
It's legacy code left over from the Fast Eddie days and it's all part of the ridiculous backlog of development requests that the site has.

Yes, but because it affects a smaller proportion of the userbase, it has a lower priority than other code fixes/changes that affect a larger proportion of the userbase. The admins are surprisingly active with updates to the website, but many of them are behind-the-scenes changes that affect harder-to-notice aspects like loading times and upgrading security.

So how is it that OTC bans still let people into Edit Banned? Was it just the first forum area to get its own ban system and thus it got implemented as part of what’s now legacy code?

I think this is just me being old. I think I was active in OTC when OTC bans first became a thing, my brain doesn’t like the idea of an implementation I remember being classified as “legacy”.

Yes, the banned thread is hardcoded to only allow banned tropers and moderators to post. Eddie did this change in December 2011 because uninvolved people kept adding unnecessary comments during ban appeals, when it was open to all.
(This is also the reason why it says "Edit banned/suspended - would like to edit again" - we are afraid that changing the title will break the special code)
According to the moderator forum, Eddie sometimes had other moderators work with him on code things but this was an absolute exception.

The Edit Banned thread was restarted a while back due to length. This was unrelated to the change to posting permissions. One problem we had was that the "mod-mode" flag table was not restarted along with the topic itself, so random posts would get flagged until Eddie fixed it.

Oh... Well then, I made a mistake on Timeline.TV Tropes. I added December 21, 2011 as the thread's first ever launch, but I didn't know it existed before then. Whoops.

I think something went very wrong with the site, I got a weirdly formatted page, and now my avatar and some other poster's avatars are gone, and I think some posts got deleted too.
I'm also getting some freeze outs on posting.
And the row of emoticons at the bottom is mostly replaced with their code tags.

EDIT: Oh. It does seem that none of the page images are showing up, instead displaying their file names. I assume it's related to changes in image code following the Boss Baby Incident.
