Wiki and Forum Policy - General Discussion

Go To

Note: The thread currently has a limit of one post every two hours for non-mod users. Currently, this is hard-coded by the admins, but there are plans to give mods the ability to toggle it without admin intervention. After mods are given the ability to do that, the time limit may be further reduced or removed entirely.

This thread is for discussing the following topics:

  • Questions and clarifications about the site's rules and policies pertaining to wiki editing, forum posting, trope launching, and so on.
  • If you have an idea for a thread on another part of the forums but aren't sure if creating it would be allowed, feel free to ask here.

This thread is not for any of the following:

  • Reporting complaints or concerns about specific moderation decisions (e.g. suspensions and thumps). Report these directly to the admins via the contact form. Selecting "The Staff" sends your message to the admins only, without making it visible to moderators.
  • Queries about thumps applied to your own forum posts (reply to the relevant moderator via PM).
  • Ban appeals (use the "Edit Banned" thread in this forum).
  • Reporting problems or requesting moderator action in the wiki or forums (use Ask The Tropers or Hollersnote  or specialized threads such as "Locked Pages").
  • Queries about locked On-Topic Conversations (OTC) threads or banned discussion topics. OTC has its own moderation discussion thread here, and the latest statement on the locked US Politics thread and other banned OTC topics is here. Bluntly, when certain OTC threads and topics have repeatedly caused problems, we're not going to provide forum space to discuss them again until the moderation toolkit is equipped to handle those conversations.
  • Cut List challenges and queries (they have their own thread here).
  • Requests for changes to the site's code or discussion about such changes', as mods cannot change the code; only the admins can do that. Please direct tech requests to Query Bugs or Query Wishlist, and take other tech-related discussion to the Changelog thread.
  • Crowner actions. Please use the holler function instead.
  • Discussion about changing or implementing policies. Please use Wiki Talk for that. (Asking whether it's OK to make a specific thread is acceptable; using this thread in place of such a thread is not.)
  • Asking about the whereabouts of inactive mods (or other inactive users) before they return, if they return at all. Use the Absent people thread for discussing inactive users.

Posts that use this thread in place of the sections listed in the bulleted list above are off-topic.
We're aware that the Edit Banned thread has a Non-Indicative Name, due to it also covering non-editing suspensions. We're not sure whether the name for that thread can even be edited without breaking the special coding that keeps posting restricted to mods and suspended users, so we're leaving it alone for now, because better safe than sorry.
(Edited Mar 28 2024, adding bullet about OTC and amending layout a little)

Yeah the idea that the mod code of conduct does not apply to this thread is a pretty wild one. Also the assertion that requesting clarification on how the “contact the staff” feature works is also a banned topic is completely new. What we were told in the past was to use that process to raise issues with mod actions, not that talking about the process was banned.

To exercise on the side of caution and avoid thumps, all I can recommend is to holler posts, use the form to directly contact the admins and let the mods and admin staff deal with it. They have already made it clear they will thump and ban people who bring that discussion in here.

This has nothing to do with the code of conduct. Moderator actions are not to be discussed in this thread. Period. You don't get to break that rule because you aren't happy about something.

Realistically, there's nothing you can do, other than try again. The staff email is your point of contact. If anything about that changes, the relevant information will be posted.

Answering some of the previous questions:

  • Recent posts on this thread were flagged in an off-site staff discussion. There was a suggestion that a swift response was needed and Fighteer was the only mod online who seemed to be able to respond (for my part, I've been offline since my last post).
  • I don't think I'm breaking any confidence if I say that Fighteer himself pointed out that this was less than ideal, and that he was only doing it because nobody else was available.

Beyond that: as noted, queries about thumps and concerns about mod behaviour are off-topic here. The admins have been clear about that and it's written into the pinned post.

In terms of contacting the admins: as mentioned in my previous post, they're only likely to be online and actively engaged in TVT stuff during their working hours. It's the weekend, so please wait until Monday before worrying that they've missed your message.

For clarity: I'm using mod hat for this one as it's just restating policy and providing some background. However, as noted, most mods appear to be offline at the moment, so this isn't something that's been reviewed by the team.

Also, the Moderator Code of Conduct page clearly states that the code is site wide. Did the moderation team, as a group, decide that this thread was an exception?

[up][up][up] From the context, it does seem like an miscommunication than an actual change in policy that the mod team collectively decided.

This is not the thread to discuss moderator actions or complaints about response times to emails. There is no thread to discuss that anywhere. You email the staff if you have concerns, this was already made clear. We get many emails and have many other more important things we are working on so it may take awhile and not all emails will get a response but they will all be read and issues related to the moderators will be dealt with internally, as usual.

The moderators are chosen by the administration, not by the users. They are also human and can make mistakes. They are also volunteers who offer up many hours of their free time to moderate this site that is very large that requires a lot of work. Users may not always like certain moderators or their decisions, it’s the same way with any website.

Tbf, this was less about a mod's actions as a mod but rather his actions as a fellow forum user.

To be less fair, this indeed isn't the thread to discuss that stuff either.

The general forum policy on 'gravedancing' covers this - if a troper's celebrating someone's death, hoping they die, or wishing other harm on them as a person, that post is likely to be thumped.

This applies even if the person in question has been found guilty of horrible things in a court of law.

If the same troper repeatedly posts this sort of thing, the thumps may be followed by a forum subforum ban.

In some cases we may decide not to wait for further posts before acting - for example, if someone is wishing death, illness or harm on another troper, they are unlikely to get a second chance before we intervene.

So if someone said that if people had suicidal thoughts over certain legislation that they should just do it, would that count as wishing harm?

The fighteer comment has already been discussed and dealt with internally and no further comments is going to change that. As I just said, there is no place to discuss moderator actions. That’s just the way it is. If you aren’t a moderator, you aren’t allowed to discuss these things.

The administration is also the ones who place the moderators in power, not the users. WE trust them and that’s what matters. Just because they make a mistake or some users don’t like them doesn’t mean you’re allowed to break the rules or demand anything be done.
