[up]We already have Our Elves Are Different for that. Our Elves Are Better is a confusing redirect that seems to be causing the definition confusion. Hence why it should be made into a disambig for the existing tropes that people often misuse the name for.

Agreed on making Our Elves Are Better a disambig.

[up][up][up]The thread literally voted to rename because Our Elves Are Better is being used for that concept and for Can't Argue with Elves.

My question now is what the order of things should be, since Our Elves Are Different already exists as a redirect. Should we rewrite the description before a mod moves the contents and we clean the wicks?

I remember a few TRS page moves were done before the descriptions and examples were rewritten/sorted, and others were sandboxed first.

How major of a rewrite do you propose? If it's just axing the first couple of paras and the rest is left intact, I think the contents can be moved to the redirect and quickly edited without the holdup that sandboxes usually involve.

Hmm. The basic idea would be to trim off or rewrite paragraphs focusing on the "better" part to instead devote that space to just describing what fictional elves tend to be like, yes?

Looking at the page as it is now, I think the first three paragraphs and the last two more-than-once-sentence ones probably need to go. The top three should probably be replaced by one or two generally laying out the idea that fantasy fiction likes to use a species that generally resembles magical humans with pointy ears, long lifespans, and sometimes also a connection to nature. Something about superior attitudes should probably still be mentioned, because it is objectively a part of the trope. The body of the description mostly describes the different common types of elves, so that's mostly fine as it is.

Doesn't look like it'll be too much to do. Most of the work would just be fixing the wicks afterwards.

Started on Sandbox. Our Elves Are Different. I took out the first paragraphs and inserted a condensed version about Superior Species onto the common elf traits part.

All right, since not much was happening I took the liberty of adding two paragraphs to the sandbox. Mostly they're just a recap of where elves came from in culture and how they developed and a brief rundown of what they're like now.

I think the sandbox description looks adequate. Don't see anything wrong with it.

I think the first two paragraphs should go to Analysis. Our Elves Are Different but after that the sandbox looks OK for Our Elves Are Different. Our Elves Are Better then gets disambiguated.

In favor of doing what Septimus said.

Do we put Our Elves Are Different on Definition-Only Pages, or is adding examples something that's yet to be done?

I'd like to apologize for all this.

No, Our Elves Are Different becomes its own trope.

I know that. I assume that means we are adding examples then? Okay.

I'd like to apologize for all this.

Yes, one would need to add examples. This is not really a candidate for Definition-Only Pages.

I feel like some useful information is lost by shuffling those paragraphs to another page.

I do feel it's kinda long, so I'm taking out some stuff in the name of trimming. Maybe this information could be used for said Analysis/ page, but I don't think it's super important on a page about various elf types in modern fiction.

    Information
  • The most distinct type originated in Norse mythology, which distinguished between the beautiful light elves (ljosalfar) of Alfheimr and the subterranean dark elves (dokkalfar or svartalfar) of Svartalfheimrnote . In general, Germanic elves were highly supernatural and ambivalent towards people, neither inherently malicious nor benevolent but capable of being either depending on personal inclination and the behavior of the humans they interacted with.
  • in particular, they very often live in forests and take a dim view of other species' abuse of the natural world. — as this is listed later on
  • — they're very rarely actually immortal, for instance, and are most often Demihumans fundamentally similar to other humanoid species outside of the aforementioned traits. '''merged by potholing Demihuman in the previous sentence

I wonder if we should move up the "Most elves usually share the following traits:" list above the "archetypal three elf types" list, since Theriocephalus added some stuff that leads into that.

Someone changed the crowner description to "tbh I think we should just make the main trope page a Just for Fun entry. It already reads like one."

How does Sandbox. Our Elves Are Different look now? Should we start migrating main page examples?

Since we're talking about migrating examples to the sandbox, should we try to keep them in some specific order (alphabetic, for example)? I find it helps to keep examples organized and to avoid repeat entries.

[up]I had started adding, finished Anime and Manga. I would think doing it like an ideal trope page (media then alphabetical) would be the way to go.

^Oh, definitely. Medium goes first, then alphabetize examples within each resulting folder — that's how I prefer to sort things, anyway.

EDIT: Moved a couple more folders.

EDIT 2: Moved a couple more.

EDIT 3: THE REVENGE: And some more.

Bump.

Apologies for the double post, but I don't think edits to older posts register as new activity on forums. Anyone else want to have a look at the draft?

Looks really good, awesome job [awesome]

I'm honestly just down to cut the ZC Es for now and move the misuse to the proper tropes.

To-do list:

  1. Break the redirect Our Elves Are Different and swap in the sandbox (once we get a couple more [tup]s) — since this already exists we don't need mod approval or action, right?
  2. Redirect Our Elves Are Better
  3. Start cleanup
