While the outbreak started around New Year's Day (12/31), it's picking up steam around the Asia-Pacific region especially since Mainland Chinese people tend to travel a lot.
For reference, the BNO Newsroom twitter has a special feed for any info on the coronavirus:

The WHO has page about COVID-19 and any other concerns people may have. I suggest peeps go to the Q&A page to check for official details.

DeSantis considers reopening nursing homes. No, I didn't know that SARS-CoV-2 is a Puppeteer Parasite, let alone that it was sophisticated enough to manipulate politicians' minds like that.
Excess death rates indicate that the UK was the European country worst hit, followed by Spain, Belgium, Sweden and the Netherlands. Italy did not offer data with which to count this statistic. Apparently the reason why Spain's outbreak was not so bad is because it was shorter and more geographically concentrated than the UK outbreak.

Echoing hymn of my fellow passerine | Art blog (under construction)@Redmess - Wait, so the government cannot force people to wear masks, but can and does ban them from wearing masks?

Genuine question why is Governor Death Sentence De Santis so uselsess.
Because his lips are securely attached to Donald Trump's posterior and he has a limited range of motion from that position.
No, no, they don't ban them from wearing masks. You can wear them if you want, but it is not mandatory. The reasoning seems to be that it should be people's personal responsibility to make the right choice. I think our government may have a little too much fate in our national attitude of common sense.
Meanwhile, things seem to be largely back to normal here, even when there are hotspots of outbreaks. People are making visits and even going on holiday again. Several of my family members are or have been on vacation, even as far as Austria. The attitude seems to be that the pandemic is largely under control, and that social distancing and avoiding crowded places will be sufficient now.

Optimism is a duty.Personally, I wouldn't suggest to travel at all until the end of the year. I won't say until a vaccine has been tested and found effective because that will probably be too long for some.
Instead of focusing on relatives that divide us, maybe we should try to find the absolutes that tie us.Today's COVID news from What the Fuck Just Happened? today.

Another 1.43 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits last week – the 19th straight week that the tally exceeded one million and the second weekly increase in a row after nearly four months of declines. 17 million Americans filed for ongoing benefits. An additional 830,000 new claims were filed for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, a benefit offered to gig and self-employed workers. (Washington Post / New York Times / Bloomberg / Wall Street Journal)
Lawmakers are “nowhere close to a deal” on a new round of coronavirus aid, according to White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows. A last-ditch effort by Senate Republicans to pass a standalone extension of extension of federal unemployment insurance failed in the Senate. The Republican proposal would have renewed enhanced unemployment benefits, but slash them from $600 a week to $200. Democrats blocked the effort, pushing for the full $600 to go into next year, which was blocked by Republicans. The Senate is scheduled to leave Washington without any resolution on the expiring benefit, which would leave tens of millions of Americans in limbo as more than 1 million new unemployment claims filed for the 19th week in a row and after the economy recorded its worst quarter on record. After testing positive for COVID-19, Rep. Louie Gohmert said he will take hydroxychloroquine. Experts have warned that the anti-malaria drug doesn’t treat the coronavirus. (The Hill)
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued a mandate that all members wear a face mask while inside the House. The mandate was announced hours after Rep. Louis Gohmert revealed that he tested positive for COVID-19. Gohmert frequently refused to wear a mask on the House floor. Members and staff will be required to wear masks in the halls of the House,” Pelosi said. She added that members and staffers will not be allowed in the House Chamber if they refuse to obey the new mandate. (CBS News)

Yeah, I have my doubts too, but they all assure me that they are being very careful, and only visiting quiet places. Campings around Europe are quieter than usual anyway, it seems.
Optimism is a duty.It seems to me that the way to navigate the Pandemic is the same way my brother taught me to drive: act as if everyone around you is a complete idiot.
Do not trust people to do the right thing, instead act as if you're sure they won't. A "hope for the best, expect the worst" deal.
If people are being responsible and using masks and taking other precautions? Great. If not, you won't suffer from it any more than you can help.

Edit:
The "hope for the best, expect the worst" thing mind you, though the Surrounded by Idiots mindset can pop up from time to time.

Instead of focusing on relatives that divide us, maybe we should try to find the absolutes that tie us.I don't know if that's an engineer-exclusive thing. Years as a private tutor and as a text editor have taught me the exact same thing.
Yeah that’s a basic rule for a lot of safety, I was taught it as a motorbike rider, assume that everyone might try and kill you.

It's kind of prominent in our professions because by default we have to lend some overengineering to any design we make since most of the values we use in our calculations end up being estimates, not to mention that you can't exactly prepare for whatever use someone decides to give to the final product or if they actually made the damn thing following the proper instructions and with the right materials.

And now, for the obligatory Indonesia COVID update of the day: 108.367 confirmed (+2.040), 65.907 recovered or discharged (+1.615) and 5.131 deaths (+73).
Scaled seekerNo new confirmed cases in Taiwan today.
467 total, 55 domestic, 36 from the fleet, 7 deceased, 441 released.
Disgusted, but not surprisedWell, this sure seems familiar...
Optimism is a duty.CSI: Coronavirus "The path to Northern California": Apparently the various cases of COVID-19 in the Bay Area of California were part of at least 7 separate groups of cases that came to California independently, without any of them being dominant. Of note, one was linked to the Grand Princess cruise ship and that particular group is part of the so-called "WA1" cluster, which is typified by the first case in Washington state. Others came from Europe (including Switzerland), New York and China.
I'll admit that it's fascinating how this ... thing managed to enter several times into the same place. Preprint studies of the Canadian and Russian outbreaks also indicate that some outbreaks have many sources - in Russia as much as 67 separate introduction events may have occurred, only one of which came from China, which in the end generated 9 separate clusters.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanIt's a webcomic about masking in Scandinavia, but it could apply to other places too.
Optimism is a duty. So, here's a question. Do we still not have data on re-infectability? I know it would be shockingly unethical to knowingly re-expose anyone who's already contracted the virus to it, but you'd think there would be at least some data on that front - the earliest sufferers coming back in, if nothing else.
Relatedly, I saw an article posit the question of what we can do if this gets out into an animal reservoir somewhere. I guess the answer is mass culling, realistically...
It's been fun.
I should also note that the "no masks outside of public transport" rule is a national one. Local authorities can still mandate them in cities and provinces if needed.
Also, there are apparently constitutional restrictions for enforcing such a national rule. Basically, you cannot force people to wear masks.
