Ambiguous Name: Relationship Writing Fumble

Go To

To-do list:

    Original post
While working on fixing the definition of Designated Love Interest, a few of us tropers came to realization that Relationship Writing Fumble might need a rework as well. Relationship Writing Fumble is currently defined as a platonic relationship coming off as romantic to fans. When we were looking at Designated Love Interest we found many examples of Designated Love Interest (a romantic relationship coming off as platonic) being listed on Relationship Writing Fumble instead. I've also noticed there are examples that have nothing to do with romance at all but are instead just fans misunderstanding writer intent with backstories and how characters relate to each other in general.

We touched on ways to try to improve the trope in that other thread and considered a few solutions:

- Changing the name of Relationship Writing Fumble to something emphasizing that this is about platonic relationships being mistaken as romantic.

- There might be a Missing Supertrope about writers accidentally implying different relationships between characters than what was intended, which is why people are dumping those kinds of examples on Relationship Writing Fumble.

[up] Well that's :/ non-indicative.

Looking back through the thread, it doesn't look like the familial aspect was addressed at all before the crowner was made and called. And I see that concerns about the name were brought up some time after the crowner was called. And at this point, Friendship Writing Fumble only has 31 wicks. Would it be possible to revisit the issue of the name?

That sounds like a good idea. I saw Platonicity Not Perceived on the previous page (try saying that five times); that sounds pretty good.

All right, first off we have to decide whether to rename at all, so let's start with that.

Double posting because I unstarred the thread because we might as well hold off on wick cleanup until after this is settled.

I bumped the ATT bulletin because we're still below the minimum amount of votes despite being close to the three-day mark.

What's the minimum number of votes, and where can this information be found? I didn't find anything on Administrivia.Trope Repair Shop

At least ten votes. I'm guessing the relevant information would be on the How Crowners Work page and not the Trope Repair Shop page, but if it isn't, feel free to take it to the Outdated Pages thread.

I feel like some of these names are a bit labored but I struggle to think of better options that make the audience reaction clear. What about "Written Platonically, Perceived Romantically?"

After the current crowner is called, I intend to compile a bulleted list of all name suggestions given since this thread was started in 2019, with the exception of Friendship Writing Fumble since we're dropping that one, followed by asking for feedback on the list and asking for further name suggestions.

I'll probably modify the pinned opening post to temporarly remove the to-do list and replace it with the list of name suggestions we already have and mention that we're seeing if we can think of anything else, then wait at least three weekdays after calling the current crowner (I think it can be called tomorrow, so I think Monday would be the soonest).

As for why I'm going by weekdays instead of days in general, it's because at least part of why the current situation happened is because Friendship Writing Fumble was the only name with consensus, but since I don't know if the Alterantive Titles crowner that included it still exists, I can't check how popular the other names on that crowner were (or even if the crowner included every suggestion given up to that point), so I figured we should dedicate more time to finding names that better indicate that all platonic relationships are covered (rather than just friendships) without sounding forced.

[up][up] Maybe "Written Platonic, Read Romantic"?

While it obviously applies to media other than literature, the dichotomy between writing and reading feels stronger to us than writing/interpretation does.

Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing.

Calling in favor of renaming. I'll go through the names later since the thread was made a few years ago and a lot of names have been suggested, and because I don't want to rush this one.

OK, so here are the names that have been suggested (aside from the one we're getting rid of); not sorted alphabetically because I'm too lazy to do that: (Update: This list is no longer being updated. Please check the pinned opening post for the most up-to-date list of name suggestions, as that is where further suggestions will be listed.)

As I said, I intend to wait until the 13th before actually making the crowner, since I feel that waiting longer for people to suggest names would be a good idea for avoiding what happened with the last rename crowner.

Edit: I edited the header to list the name suggestions we have so far, and to request further name suggestions (as well as the plan to wait until at least the 13th for suggestions to come in). The stuff that was previously there (regarding wick cleanup) isn't gone; I commented it out and will bring it back (but with Friendship Writing Fumble being replaced with the new name, and with a note saying to move Friendship Writing Fumble wicks to the new name) after we've selected a name.

Might be worth adding a note about this being for general audience reactions and not just Shipping Goggles as a precaution, as the name change might encourage shippers to proselytize their faves.

[up]Adding a note where?

Edit: I added another sentence after the request for name suggestions. Is that what you meant?

I meant that whatever name we go with, it might be worth adding something to the main definition to avert people who see the changed names as inviting them to proselytize about their favorite noncanon ship. Despite its other issues, the old/current name's inclusion of the term "Fumble" is indicative of the writers committing a relatively objective act of miscommunication to general audiences, whereas the new names sound more... personalized, perhaps. They could be used by shippers to project personal opinions about the work and its handling of ships.

I've decided to downvote Supposedly Platonic Relationship and Allegedly Platonic Relationship. They both sound to me like they are coming down on the side of the non-platonic reading being more obvious. The "written X read Y"-type names sound a lot more objective to me.

Agreed, they come off as a little biased in favor of the romantic interpretation and Shipping Goggles when these tropes are intended to be descriptive of the way audience react as opposed to how justified they are. Not to mention they sound like they can be applied to queer relationships that were deliberately written a certain way for the sake of Getting Crap Past the Radar.

Crown Description:

Consensus was to rename Friendship Writing Fumble due to issues with the name (particularly, the fact that it can refer to platonic relationships other than friendships, such as familial ones). What should its new name be?
