Unreleased Work Page Cleanup (Speculation, Spoilers, ZCE etc.)

Go To

This is a thread for checking up on pages for works that have not been released yet, to make sure that they are not straying into rampant speculation or posting crazy behind the scenes spoilers. You can bring both individual examples or entire pages to attention here.

In extreme cases, any page can be locked, but hopefully that won't be necessary.

(As these pages often are hit with zero-context examples and shoehorning as well, all four - speculation, spoilers, ZCEs, and shoehorning may get addressed simultaneously.)

The policy governing this effort is Creating A Work Page For An Unreleased Work. Cleanup is being tracked using the Unreleased Works sandbox.

All pages for unreleased works should include a %% comment at the top of the page, confirming the policy and linking to this thread and the Administrivia page. It doesn't have to be exactly the same as the example provided here, but this provides a template to work with.

Template for the unreleased work comment

%% Speculative troping is not allowed on TV Tropes.

%% We trope what DOES happen in works, not what MIGHT happen or is LIKELY to happen.
%%
%% For unreleased works where all we have to go on is advertising and other supplemental materials, we have some detailed guidelines, which can be found at Administrivia/CreatingAWorkPageForAnUnreleasedWork.
%%
%% NOTE - these rules also mean that unreleased works should only have one page image, and that image should NOT be changed again until the work is released.

We just want this site to be a useful source of information.

That said, even if it's against policy to write up tropes that we get from an off-market download of the game, we do have a release date, and a recently released set of videos (here) does provide enough information to trope.

All things said, I do think it's a fair concern that even if policy is followed in the making of the page, it would be a magnet for editors who aren't so keen on following the policy.

A good amount about the game is known due to the soft launch. Is it against rules to trope that? It's not exactly a leak if it's officially released.

But do we have three valid examples yet?

[up] That sounds like the right question at this point.

I think even without the small scale launch, we have at least three valid tropes now:

Combatant Cooldown System: Pokemon can only use moves when enough of the team’s shared move gauge has filled over time. The How To Play Pokemon Masters: Moves video explains the system in detail.

Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors: In contrast to the main series, the How To Play Pokemon Masters: Battles video shows that Pokémon now each have only one elemental weakness.

Limit Break: As seen in the How To Play Pokémon Masters: Moves video, Sync Moves are powerful attacks that can be performed by Sync Pairs after completing a certain number of actions.

Those are phrased as though using promotional materials to draw conclusions about what tropes will be in the final work.

What tropes are present in the materials to which the public has access?

[up]Those tropes are also in materials the public has access to, namely, the full game, but I was trying to avoid referencing that. That said, I’m not going to do this with you beyond saying that those videos purport to be representative of the full game.

We have three valid examples. The fact they're pre-release examples for a theoretically post-release work is meaningless.

Considering the game is actually out now, it's not exactly this thread's concern anymore.

So your argument is "someone, somewhere, who is not me, has played it, and these tropes are probably in it"?

You're cramming them in on a technicality. Seriously, why is it so hard to just wait until you've actually experienced the work to try to trope it? This wiki isn't going to disappear before the game comes out in your area. There isn't a prize for being the first person to add a trope entry.

If the game is already out in some areas, all the more reason to let someone who can actually write a proper example write-up with context drawn from the game itself create the page.

Why are we even having this discussion when there are already dozens of videos about playthroughs of the game and what's in it on youtube that anyone could just take the information from?

Thumped: for switching the discussion from the topic to a person. Doesn't take many of this kind of thump to bring a suspension. Stay on the topic, not the people in the discussion.

Folks, if you haven't played the game, and nobody you know has played the game, and there's no publicly available information from people who have played the game, then don't add tropes to the article. This is really simple. Nobody's Constitutional rights are being violated by being asked to wait.

There is public information from people who have played (e.g. Serebii)

[up][up] And of course, if the contrary is true, examples can be added.

If I haven't personally played the game, but there is publicly available information from people who have played the game, then it's safe to add examples because the publicly available information can act as my source.

In the case of Pokémon Masters, a few people have made this information available, so anything they confirmed can be added as a post-release example.

I've discovered that in the pre-release panels for Shin Sakura Wars, Yohei Azakami (Seijuro Kamiyama's VA) and designer Takayuki Okada actually played the game for the adventure and battle mode demonstrations. Would those count as sources?

[up][up] I don't know where this idea of actually playing the game or watching the entire movie started as a mandatory requirement for troping works. I may have missed recent news in this thread, can somebody fill me up on the recent debate here?

There's no way a troper can verify that the other troper has actually finished the entire work by asking. And just because a work hasn't been officially in your country means that you are prohibited from troping it. Trailers can be troped for a reason, and anybody can access them.

It just sounds ridiculous if you ask me. I think I once read a comment here or in ATT wherein a troper reverted or questioned another troper's edits in the Spiderman Far From Home film while also asking if the film has been released on the editor's country asking "Have you actually seen the film? Is it actually released in your country?"

Are we going to verify each troper's credibility now? Just any quick Google search will help us check if the works have been released when and where, and not asking if the troper himself went to see the final film or something...

Yes, I do think that you should have experienced a work before troping it. That's common sense. If you haven't experienced the work, what business could you possibly have saying what tropes are in it?

If you want to trope a trailer, the rules allow you to do so (as long as you specify that that's where the trope occurs), but don't write the example as if it applies to a work you haven't experienced.

No, I can't verify who has and hasn't experienced the work. If you tell me you have, then I have no choice but to take your word for it. But since no one here is actually making that claim, that's irrelevant.

We don't trope hearsay. We don't trope word of mouth. We trope what happens in the work.

Having the Masters stuff split across two threads is confusing. As it's a released work currently tied up in page lock limbo, let's take it to the Locked Pages thread.

Characters.Steven Universe Homeworld Gems has a section for Heart Gem, the villain of the upcomming movie and it looks like there's some speculative troping.

Hmm... Yeah, that's not good. Considering how much of this Gem is being kept under wraps (from her motives to her voice to her frickin' name), it'd just be easier to ax her character sheet entirely until the movie airs, or at least delete the completely speculative stuff and comment out the rest until the movie airs.

The wording on Diabolus ex Machina is pretty funny, though.
