We're starting with Creed 2 though, so...

Life has become a balancing act for Adonis Creed. Between personal obligations and training for his next big fight, he is up against the challenge of his life. Facing an opponent with ties to his family’s past only intensifies his impending battle in the ring. Rocky Balboa is there by his side through it all and, together, Rocky and Adonis will confront their shared legacy, question what’s worth fighting for, and discover that nothing’s more important than family. Creed II is about going back to basics to rediscover what made you a champion in the first place, and remembering that, no matter where you go, you can’t escape your history.

Son of Apollo Creed vs Son of Ivan Drago!

I got - I got - I got loyalty inside my DNA!

I thought the first film was by far the best thing of the rocky franchise, so I'm excited about this one. I really want to see how they handle Ivan Drago and his relationship with both Adonis and Rocky.

Didn't Stallone say Drago shot himself after the Soviet government blacklisted him from ever boxing again, or did I dream that?

There's been about a lot of back and forth about what exactly happened to Ivan Drago in the years since Rocky IV. I think the more or less "canon" (before this movie) explanation was that Drago ended up blacklisted by the soviets and over the years ended up with his body completely ruined due his steroid abuse and working in a Russian gas station or something to pay the bills. I think at some point he may have mentioned the suicide thing, but I can't recall either.

I really wish Creed would bring back some of the old school characters or at least mention them, like Clubber Lang (who according to Stallone went the full George Foreman and became a evangelical pastor), Tommy Gun and Dixon. It'd make the Rocky universe more fleshed out rather than just "rocky beats (x), onto the next opponent".

[up]You know I would pay good money for a cameo of Mr. T selling “Clubber Lang’s Meat Clubbering Grills” in the background.

New trailer for Drago II: The Return of the Siberian Express.

It's pretty damn hype.

[up]Well, looks like Ivan Drago didn't kill himself. Judging by the trailer, he looks as remorseless as ever.

Posted that exact same trailer two posts up.

[up][up] This actually mildly concerns me. My hope is that the film will humanize Drago and his kid like the first film did with "Pretty boy" Ricky Conlan.

I kind of wonder if they’re gonna be able to add humanity (which is what made Creed so good) to arguably the most cartoonish and over-the-top of the Rocky films.

This parody video puts it best. In-universe, do you think people argue if Rocky ended the Cold War?

Well they already started in the previous movie, by adding a lot of weight to Apollo's death and downfall, even going all-in in the Alternative Character Interpretation of "Apollo knew he was going to die but wanted to go out in The Last Dance".

I think they can do it. Parallel Drago a bit with the real life story of boxers after the fall of the soviet union like the Klitschikos and such.

I think in the Rocky universe Rocky's victory over Drago is likely seen as the counterpart to things like (as the video mentions) the time America lost to the Soviet Union in Baseball or when it won in ice hockey or Bobby Fischer vs Boris Spassky.

I've been making a recurring joke for years that in real life, Drago would have won the final fight. He drops Rocky three times in the first round and nails him with 34 unanswered punches (with Rocky barely trying to raise his guard), any referee would be insane not to rule it a TKO on Drago's favor after that. So I also wonder if the match is controversial IRL due that.

And Dolph Lundgren is one of the martial arts meathead character actors who actually can act so I've heard.

I don't think he's ever going to be picking up any awards but he's capable enough. Stallone is definitely the better actor on his A game from what I have seen.

Nothing in the trailer seems to indicate a more sympathetic or humanised Drago Sr. My guess would be the focus would be on Jr., and his upbringing.

I doubt they will, but it would be fun if they slipped in one of the Vince Di Cola instrumentals (Training Montage or War) from Rocky 4 somewhere in there (My fav song from the film is actually No Easy Way Out, but I doubt they'll put that one in there).

So which Rocky films are worth watching? Are the spinoff movies good?

Sorry for the double post, maybe we should lock this thread and make the other one a general Rocky franchise thread?

I mean... sure? Creed is a spin-off that seems to be branching out on it's own so I figure it's better to have a thread for it, but, I'm not really fighting for this one.

There are no Rocky films that aren't worth watching.
