1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

Status Values

    General Site Issues
  • Being logged in as someone else, sort of. [FIXED]
  • Where'd the "Folders Open" toggle go? Not a bug, it's in your profile.
  • Multiple issues with the new site search feature. [Logged]
    • No sorting options.
    • Forum poster search is gone. [FIXED]
    • Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
    • Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
  • Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
    • ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
  • The Cut List does not work.
    • Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]
    • Line breaks don't work. [FIXED]
    • Cut request reasons don't appear. [FIXED]
    • Additional cutlist issues noted here.
  • Note, subscript, and superscript formatting are broken in various places. [FIXED]
  • Night vision has significant readability problems. [Patched]
  • Namespace index is broken. [Logged]

    Wiki Issues
  • Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]
    • Remaining issue: the lock system still doesn't distinguish between an article that's locked and one that's checked out for editing.
  • Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
    • HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.
  • Edits won't save when the [norreallife] tag is present in the markup. [FIXED]
  • Redirects are broken. [Patched]
    • This is at least partially fixed. We need to know if there are any remaining problems.
  • Indexing is broken. [In Progress]
  • Images on wiki articles are rendered smaller than in the previous design. [Patched]
    • Resizing images with [quoteright] tags is still broken.
  • The "Following" list (formerly called the Watchlist) doesn't distinguish visually between viewed and unviewed articles. [In Progress]
  • Custom titles are no longer appearing in all places where they should. [FIXED]
  • In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
    • Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
    • In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
  • The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]

    Forum Issues
  • [quoteblock] markup causes everything inside to appear italic and squashed together. [FIXED]
  • Line breaking for external links doesn't work correctly. [FIXED]
  • Post numbering is no longer visible, although you can retrieve it from the hard-link. [Logged]
  • "Delete all posts by user" mod feature now causes posts to be completely hidden instead of replaced with "Troll Post". [Logged]
  • "Mark all as read" forum feature doesn't work. [Logged]
  • "Save Draft" feature doesn't work as expected. [Logged]
  • Forum post preview doesn't show all markup. [FIXED]
  • Unread indicators on individual forums (topics.php) seem to have nothing to do with whether you actually have any unread posts. [Logged]

    Miscellaneous
  • Avatar upload is broken. [In Progress]
  • Avatar galleries aren't formatted properly. [Logged]
  • Crowners are broken. [Logged]
  • Namespace configurator (mod tool) is missing some auto page type options, and the namespace locking feature doesn't work. [Logged]

Yeah, I think I'm going to piggyback on a lot of posts and say I'm not sure if this is the best update ever.

Also want to express how I liked having the "toggle spoilers" option in the "display" section of the sidebar.

Like someone said, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

I think this counts as the listed problem of "how much data we can edit on a page", but I just got a warning for trying to add a short 2 sentence trope to the Overwatch - Damage Q to S character page. It said I was trying to edit too much of the article.

I agree with the others. This isn't even an issue with the look of the site and more of the bugs being so broken that it takes away any interest in using TV Tropes. If it's at all possible, the old layout should be switched back until these bugs get sorted out. The site is practically unusable in the current state it's in.

Absolutely agree. I've been working on overhauling a video game's character sheet in Notepad for the past few days because I want to add more info, especially tropes applying in the fandiscs. And while I haven't clicked the Edit Page option yet, given what I'm reading here, I do not want to touch anything here with a ten-foot pole.

Pretty sure most of it has been said already, but here goes:

1. The custom titles don't seem to be working anymore. They work on the pages themselves but all links show the uncustomised titles.

2. Redlinks for some namespaces seem broken. I see redlinks to nonexisting pages in the Literature and Creator namespaces as red as usual, but ones to the Music namespace are shown as blue instead of red.

3. Pages lock after trying to edit them and yeah, there's the 'you're traing to change too much' issue. Since I often overhaul entire Literature pages in case they're very short or outright stubs, this is annoying.

4. I'm personally not a fan of the contrast in night vision mode. I was a fan of the dark grey grey in the previous design because it was much friendlier on the eyes. The contrast now is very jarring and could use some adjustment, I think.

5. It would be nice if the space between the lines in page quotes (and quotes in general, but page quotes in particular) could be reduced. They're really taking up too much space.

6. My profile claims that my account is older than it actually is.

7. No line breaks in the edit history, making it difficult to tell what's going on.

Totally on board as usual with the redesign as a whole, though. It's just a website, people, and a lot of the bugs will be evened out in the coming days and all will be fine. It's almost impossible to catch all the bugs before actually launching the thing as everyone uses a different browser and different settings and so on.

I should also mention how I LOVE that in those cases where a page's image is longer than the text beside it, the image does NOT cut into the trope list anymore. It was driving me nuts.

1) Can we please have "Show spoilers" back in the sidebar. I'm sure that I'll learn to live with the new colour scheme, but I often want to switch from "spoilers visible" to "spoilers hidden" from page to page, and having to go into my profile to do it will be really annoying.

2) I'm posting this on my iPad, and the text entry keeps on slowing down. Is this normal for forums on mobiles devices? I never had any problems editing pages with it on the old site.

3) "Preview" isn't showing the paragraph breaks I can see in the text entry box.

As you'll see from the edit I just made to Telenovela (complete reorganization of the examples list to fix the index-tag glitch from the update), I clearly have no edit restrictions. Is this perhaps that suggestion from the wishlist to make it harder to vandalize/ban-evade by giving only accounts over a certain age completely unrestricted edit privileges?

Edit: though I did also use this version of the site a few months ago when it was in beta, perhaps that's why it's performing better for me?

The lack of line breaks makes it hard to seperate quotes on all the quotes pages.

Really hope they fix the "can't log in on Safari" glitch. I absolutely hate it when admins on a site are too lazy to make it accessible for all browsers.

Hopefully they see all of this going on here and realize how heinously unpopular the new layout is.

The only thing that I want to add that I feel like wasn't stated enough here is the changes to folders and index bits on pages.

Mainly, that they look much less visually appealing and are a lot sloppier then before.

Honestly fine with the color scheme changes, but I would really like it if the pages themselves hadn't changed.

Throwing my hat in the ring for a broken interface: This UI is unmanageable, the formatting is terrible, the 'Marked as Read' is nonfunctional, I cannot use any of my bookmarked convos or posts, and I cannot edit at all. What was wrong with the old layout that warranted this? Forget the bugs, the forums are almost unreadable and the sidebar is a complete mess.

What also irks me is that this whole update process is so nebulous that even our mods barely know what is going on. I don't get the feeling these changes came about because of user feedback, but because of some black box decision process.

And then consider that many tropers made donations a few years back to make the overhaul possible in the first place. Is this how they spend our donations? They took years for this, and this is the best they can come up with?

Dark Phoenix 94 that seems to be when you try to post more than once without leaving the thread, possibly to deter spamming

Bob Saget 9 — Septimus Heap seems to be managing it, and at least one other mod has posted, so they're likely relaying concerns back

[down]second the massive spaces, again. That's my biggest aesthetic concern, since I don't mind the colors and hopefully text size is an easy fix.

Seriously, either fix this stuff ASAP; do a rollback to the old style and format and work on this thing until it works properly; or just plain offer an option to the old style and format. This new format for media tropes just looks like someone doesn't know how to properly edit and put way too many spaces between each trope example.

Haven't seen this mentioned in abit but the "more" option not being a dropdown menu anymore causes some pages to become complete clusterfucks: https://imgur.com/0VuWnzr

Thats not even all of them.

I am not impressed with the lack of mods or admins addressing concerns. All we have been given is two this is what we broke lists. Can you please tell us why you changed the site and why certain choices were made when the previous version was basically the same as this one but actually worked and looked better?
