@Customer: The series honestly would've been better if High Elf Archer was our viewpoint character, since she's both a sheltered noble and a fairly experienced adventurer, meaning she'd be a natural choice to be The Watson for the audience to learn how different GS' methods are from "normal" adventurers and exposition about the world in general. It's not like you'd have to diminish Priestess' role either since she serves to humanize GS.

Wait, the Goblin Spayer deliberately uses low quality weapons? That's so stupid.

His reasoning is in case he dies he doesn't want to give the Goblins anything good after they rob his corpse.

Though I don't think he actually buys totally shit equipment, just more average stuff. Not too good, not too bad, adequate.

That's not pragmatic. He's making his job less efficient. So one goblin gets a good sword and that they most likely can't wear if he dies which is a lot less likely than some inexperienced schmuck.

I don’t think he’s particularly well-off financial wise so it’s prolly a case of “do with what ya can” I guess.

Plus he is rather off-kilter, the demented armored bugger.

There has been stories of Goblins killing high level adventurers and stealing their high level weapons. It even happens in the manga later on and the goblin whom does it is a serious threat.

I do agree though that it is pretty dumb as the chances of that happened are pretty slim and even if the Goblin Slayer got taken out by goblins he could probably hook up explosives to his corpse or something to try to avoid his weapon getting used against other adventurers. Its inefficient yes.

The armor thing is equally dumb too as most if not all goblins would never be able to use his armor or anyone elses.

Armor, in particular, should be a piece of equipment which quality is always useful. Like, I can theoretically understand why better weapons might just not useful against goblins. There *is* such thing like too much overkill. If his weapons can kill goblins easily enough, I can understand having a magic dragon slayer might not make much of a difference, thus the risk-benefit might tilt against it. Armor though? Unless you have some good enough so that you never take any damage ever, you can always have a better one.

That and armor that can fit GS shouldn't fit most goblins, unless they have blacksmiths or break it in pieces, which would probably ruin the armor.

MB talk about two of my favorite anime this season, what their appeal is, and why they work despite the obvious first impression a casual observer could have of them.

MB talks about what’s admittedly my favorite shown this season, SSSS.GRIDMAN, but instead of discussing waifu bait or the dub villain channeling Tim Curry, he goes over the Tokusatsu influence in the show and how it tries to replicate that feel.

He’s also hoping they don’t go to space. But with channeling Tim Curry means they may end up in the one place not corrupted by capitalism.

If it's a Trigger dub, Erica Mendez has got to show up sooner or later.

Well Erica Mendez CAN appear in Funimation dubs, but it's rare.

All I've heard about about Gridman before was something about thighs, and after seeing the supposed "thicc" character in question, all I gathered was that 1) I'm not terribly into thighs, like, at all, 2) the character isn't all that; she looks like she just has a more natural physique than just about any other anime girl in existence (and yes, I'm aware of the character being specifically designed to have thigh appeal), and 3) no one (in my circles) seems to want to talk about Gridman beyond this specific type of fanservice, making it hard to suss out what the show is about from simply looking around. All I got from promotional imagery was that the show was some sort of mecha anime.

Geoff making a video like this piqued my interest way more than the supposed hype train has, and now I've queued it up to watch sometime later down the line.

In fact, his videos on "Rascal"/Bunny girl and Slime Incarnation convinced me to give those shows a look see too, though admittedly I was already interested in Slime for a while (thanks, Goblin Slayer memes), and to be honest, I'm still hesitant on Bunny Girl. Partly because I'm not a big fan of bait and switch anime titles, and partly due to some of the comments I've seen regarding it making it come across as somewhat pretentious, though I want to give it a chance before getting too influenced by reactions.

SSSS Gridman is pretty great, and the fanservice really isnt a focus. It's just there. Like the copious Transformers references.

I'm sad there are fans who only care about Thicc thighs and don't know it's based on a decades-old mech/kaiju live-action serial.

from the comments i have seen on reddit, they care about the giant robot fights, characters AND thicc thighs, it has been gaining popularity rather steadily

[up]It’s got a surprising cross section of fans - People who watched Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad as kids and are stunned someone else remembered it, fans of mecha disappointed by recent subpar offerings, where the mecha was clearly secondary, waifu fans, and of course, fans of tokusatsu who really, really want more people to see the joy of toku. Apparently the Blu-Ray orders are very strong.

And it’s that wide appeal that would make me love nothing more than for Trigger to do something with other toku licenses. Who wants Trigger animated Choujin Sentai Jetman?

I mean it's a tough rope to walk on with mech anime. People expect to see robots fighting, but the meat of the story involves humans with drama, so how do you balance that?

okay, imma have to stop you right there. if you want a mecha series where the mecha is the focus, you should watch early super robot anime or a mecha series for children. the mech itself hasn't been the focus of mecha shows for a long time

[up]There’s a major difference between “having the human element compliment action scenes” (which I would argue all the classics of the genre do) and “ignoring the robot as much as possible for hand to hand fights, or a weird subplot that many joked was Shinzo Abe promoting family development.”

I’d argue that’s something else Gridman does very well. A few annoyances aside, a lot of the dialog feels very natural and fluid rather than a monologue or a soliloquy.
