Duplicate Trope: Short Anime Movie

This page is redundant with Short Film.

It also has a confused definition, seemingly conflating "movie" with feature film

some anime released officially as "movies" can be as short as 30 minutes

and it's also confused with Anthology Film

anime movies in Japan are quite often shown as double or even triple features

and it makes an assertion regarding American films that is wholly unsupported and really just flat-out false.

In contrast, a movie in America clocking under 80 minutes...is fuel for criticism and suspicion of a padded out regular episode with slightly higher production values

In summary, there is no need for a page for Short Film and a Recycled In Space page for Short Film...IN JAPAN! If anything, the Short Film page should be better organized with a folder for Anime & Manga. Recommendation: make Short Anime Movie a redirect to Short Film and port everything in the Short Anime Movie list over.

The AMPAS definition of "feature" is only 40 minutes, btw, although in practice anything you buy a ticket for is going to be at least an hour.

Anyway, that page is both useless and a mess.

Japanese anime movies are pretty much stuck in the past. Full priced movies or occasionally higher than full priced movies end up being 45 minutes or so.

They occasionally get packaged in with some shorts 10 - 15 mini episodes with them and the movies will never actually bill themselves as a short film leading to a LOT of pissed off people especially in the western world which expect actual movies instead of glorified OV As.

As an example, the GIRLS und PANZER das FINALE movie released this year was 45 minutes long. And The Digimon Movie that released in the theaters in the US was actually the first 3 Digimon movies pasted together with a flimsy connection cause they were so short, the first one was only 20 minutes long.

Its so common that having a full length anime movie, especially a serial/non-serial movie is the exception to the rule. Only Kyo Ani makes actual full on serial movies as standard.

Well, the concept of a "feature" film is vague. Personally I would say to use the AMPAS rule, which says anything over 40 minutes is a feature—you have to be <40 min to qualify for the live-action or animated short film categories. Anime that is less than 40 minutes could go on a Short Film list under an anime folder.

And as noted above Anthology Film is a thing. Any anime film that was a collection of shorts that exceeded 40 minutes could go on the Anthology Film list under an Anime & Manga folder.

And even if we do keep Short Anime Film as a page then the description needs a major rewrite, and anthology films that are longer than 40 minutes should be taken out of the list.

In terms of anime movies, the ones that get accused of being bait films are usually 42 to 45ish minutes aka minimal effort.

There are no actual Anthology Films as in a collection of shorts that it describes on the page, you get maybe a 10 minute short and a 31 minute main event or 10 minutes of the characters talking to the audience and 31 minute actual movie.

There are a lot of Anthology Series like Azumanga Daioh which are usually adaptations of Yonkoma but that's about it.

I was originally going to say merge with Original Video Animation due to some confusion from the definition, but looking over the examples list just makes me think this is Not A Trope (or any sort of legitimate labeling). A bunch of the examples are just "these movies are kinda short" (but not short enough to be Short Films), with a decent number being at or a little over an hour.

I'd just cut the page.

I would put forth the option of culling to full priced in theater movies that are under an hour or 50 minutes.

[up]That's an option but I have no idea how to curate that.

The examples need to state their runtime and if its packaged with a short or 10 minutes of filler at the start in which characters talk to the audience about how they are supposed to play along with the movie (here's looking at you multiple Precure Movies.)

I started this thread and I'd completely forgotten about it.

Anyway, this page is useless.

Cut or redirect would be fine.

There's unfinished business. Please purge this list and let us know when that's done.
