By at least RE 3, Umbrella went full pants on head dumbass with the following:

  • Sent in a team of mercenaries to "save" people when in actuality, they were being used as test subjects against their BOWs.
  • Had a factory directly next to a public park where people can easily wander near or into and anyone that did were either killed on sight or captured to be subjected to experiments.
  • Had experiments in the basement of a hospital.
  • Basically did fuck all to reel back the disaster that hit the city in general.

And as a result the city got fucking nuked.

And then RE 6 said that was Simmons' doing rather than the government being proactive about stopping zombies from getting beyond the city.

I'm quite confident in my shitposting you know

It's not like a nuclear weapon is going to kill a virus. There will still be infectious material (and infected organisms) alive afterwards. Umbrella in both games and films is cartoonishly stupid.

At least in the games, the missile was thermobaric rather than nuclear.

[up][up]The difference is still that in the games Umbrella is ultimately run by a guy who WANTS to kill a large part of the human population.

The movies' version purely runs on Underpants Gnome logic.

Imagine making less sense than a bloody Social Darwinist...

[up][up]The sixth film dovetails with the games, and reveals the outbreak was intentional-Umbrella deliberately released the virus and kept making BO Ws to hunt and kill all remaining survivors. Umbrella's masterminds waited out the apocalypse in suspended animation underground, leaving only movie-Wesker and a handful of troops on the surface to manage the BO Ws and hunt survivors.

I’d like a Resident Evil movie to do what the games did: go back to their original roots.

Though I have to admit, the Resident Evil movies were still better than the novels (talk about a low bar) - at least the movie characters weren't non-stop undressing each other in their minds.

Probably one of the worst game novelisations I've ever read (which says a lot as I have read the first Dawn of War novel).

RE: Nemesis: Don't see the Junji Ito influence. I already said this, but the teeth really remind of the Dominators from DC Comics' Invasion! So unnaturally long and thin...ugh.

RE: Movies: Yeah, I didn't bother with the movies because the games' heroes, aka the characters who SHOULD have been the leads, got pushed aside because Paul W.S. Anderson wouldn't stop gushing about his wife who just so happens to be the lead. What's worse, he kept getting away with it because the movies basically printed money.

And now, he's doing it again with Monster Hunter? Come on, man!

[up] Eh, I wouldn't recommend it, chief. Death By Sex is a thing for a reason after all...

Which novels? The only one I know of is from S.D. Perry.

The Resident Evil movies collapsed when they were more about Paul Anderson showing off his wife than anything. While it had issues, I would have preferred the George Romero script by a mile.

[up][up] I just checked - yeah, the Perry novels.

They're awful. Almost every time you have a female and male protagonist in any scene, they're thinking of boinking each other (no matter the constellation) and the antagonists are somehow even less nuanced.

Huh. I actually rather liked the RE novels, although I wouldn't put them up against Tolkien. Trashy pulp stuff, quick to read, perfectly matches the games. Some people get really triggered by sexual attraction, I guess.

More thoughts about the first game.

Jill strangely has the most Cutscene Incompetence in this game. She has to be saved by a male colleague at least twice (the descending ceiling is canon).

The puzzles are fine for the most part. That said, some of them can be quite obtuse, such as the armor statues and the weather vanes.

The Run or Die enemy this time is Lisa. I found out that I was supposed to open the coffin so she commits suicide. In my playthrough Barry knocked her on the ledge with his gun and I just aimed my gun down.

The fixed camera does give some dynamic angles and sets up ambush as intended. That said, it also makes me unable to see zombies that are right in front of Jill, and some checkable items can be hard to see. The jarring perspective shifts also screws up my movement a couple time, especially on the road near the Lisa shack.

Shout out to the guy who speedrun as Chris. He got to the top 10, alone in a sea of Jill's (does that make him a Chris sandwich?)

Where there's life, there's hope.

The only thing I remember from Perry's take is their massive fanboyism on Rebecca and making two novels solely dedicated to her.

Yes, they were certainly in love with Rebecca, shipping her with Anything That Moves. Frankly, so was I after reading the books. [lol]

As I said, I wouldn't dare hold them up as examples of great writing, but I still enjoyed them.

As a general rule, are there any novels based on game franchises that fit the definition of higher art? I don’t count Orson Scott Card's Empire given the divisive nature of the novel and the fact that the game and novel fans fall into two separate camps.

[up] In my experience, the good ones are usually the ones that use the setting, but don't 1 to 1 translate a video game into novel form.

The funny thing is that the first RE novel that isn't a straight game adaptation features Rebecca running around New England making calf eyes at a hunky boy while fighting a mad scientist... wait, I got confused.
