[up] Well, to be fair VIRM lost their whole Hive Mind (sans the core which composes of their original species) of souls, and their whole fleet, when Streletzia blew their nucleolus-planet to kingdom come. Reducing their threat-levels immensily at the massive loss of numbers. So they didn't get completely off scot-free from the whole ordeal.

I'll admit, I lost interest in the series, so I don't know how much I can comment on it. I'm at least glad that actually gave Ikuno a happy ending - when the alternatives were Cure Your Gays, Bury Your Gays, and her ending up alone, this seems to be surprisingly positive for her. That being said, I have two questions: did she and Naomi have any meaningful interactions prior to this, and how explicit is it that they're in a relationship?

Well, that was Darling in the FRANXX. It had its ups and downs, but overall I enjoyed it.

[up] Considering Naomi hasn't been active in the show since episode 1, not much. Their relationship isn't stated outright but it's very heavily implied; they're holding hands in a romantic fashion toward the end of the episode.

That's just an unfortunate side-effect of the main pair cannibalizing the attention.

They really should've cut down on the cast numbers to better juggle Character Focus.

A cruel, sick joke is still a joke, and sometimes all you can do is laugh.

I see. Well, again, it's nice that they gave her a happy ending, but it does kind of sound like they put in a lesbian relationship without stating it outright or putting in the work of showing how they ended up together, which is kind of lazy, considering how much focus the show gave heterosexual relationships. Apparently, how Ikuno actually found love wasn't a story they were much interested in telling.

Like, don't get me wrong, I'm glad that they decided to actually give her a happy ending, but not killing her off or magically turning her straight...is a pretty low bar to clear.

Of course, having not watched the second half of the series, I can only talk about this from incomplete secondhand information, so my criticisms shouldn't be given that much weight. I think it's worth considering, though.

Edit: Wait, what happened to Miku and Zorome?

Well, I hoped the series would stick the landing, but the last episode was honestly kinda bad. We spend more time with the No one care Squad than with Hiro and Zero Two, the action is lackluster, they don't even kill VIRM and everyone but the main characters get a happily ever after... meanwhile they have to get reincarnated or some shit.

Still, I won't let that spoil my enjoyment of the series as a whole. It was a good series, though rather uneven one, with highs and lows sharply contrasting. The first part was better than the second which got slow and meandering at points. It's not near Triggers best like Kill La Kill, but not bad, like Kiznaiver.

Honestly it'd probably be just another mecha show, but it got unexpectedly rocketed up into prominence through sheer force of Zero Two. That alone is rather remarkable.

[up][up] They're implied to be together. And Futoshi gets married to a random girl whose name doesn't even get mentioned.

It being a mecha show would have honestly improved it greatly than what we ended up getting

[up][up][up][up]Miku and Zorome are back to doing their usual tsuntsun towards each other. That said, Miku finally let her hair down for good and Zorome works as a teacher, apparently.

It's an odd situation where things needed more time to develop, yet also needed move faster. Things like Hiro going full dino and Naomi being alive should have happened earlier. Basically everything after Gran Crevasse, and or at the very least between that and the VIRM reveal, would need an overhaul.

As for the ending, considering Hiro and 02's reincarnation, Nana and Hachi being immortal, and VIRM's still present threat, it would make a decent setup for a movie or at least an OVA to wrap things up a bit more decisively.

@Karkat: To be fair Ikuno did have a rather important role in the epilogue − their relationship started from there (plus asking Goro to get back her miror). But yeah, I wish Naomi had reappeared a bit earlier so that we knew a bit more about her beforehand. As well as Ikuno's talent for SCIENCE, although we knew she was a bookworm I guess…?

Well again, haven't seen, so can't really comment. I do think the fact that she's only getting a girlfriend now is still worthy of criticism.

And now I'm bawling my eyes out again...

Why?

I got curious and looked up what the lifespan of a cherry blossom tree could be.

Turns out, the oldest one is over 2000 years old. And looking at the picture of both that tree and the one in episode 24...

I realized that squad 13 are no longer alive at the time Hiro and Zero-Two finally came back from whatever dark corner of the universe that the VIRM(in) was skulking in.

I had just wiped my Tears of Joy over this episode...Now I'm weeping Tears of Remorse instead.

WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!

Why do I have this hole in my chest!? WHY!?

(I need to rewatch this again...)

Well, that was an ending. An ending that was admittedly pretty good.

I find the idea of a half-alien girl losing her sentient sailor uniform evoking more pathos than two star-crossed lovers sacrificing themselves in order to save humanity absurd. But hey, truth is stranger than fiction.

At least it wasn't Kiznaiver/10

Honestly it'd probably be just another mecha show, but it got unexpectedly rocketed up into prominence through sheer force of Zero Two. That alone is rather remarkable.

People watched it because it was a Trigger and A-1 anime, stayed because of the Final Boss of Kirby 64.

It ends with the standard "pairing the couples" cliche. The hero ends up with the childhood friend he forgot about, and the rival for his affection ends up with not-Kamina.

People only remember the ending because Luluco and Nova had a cameo.

The ending was alright, but people didn't like it because Trigger was attempting Playing Against Type and it wasn't the most well-executed attempt.

And with that, I am free.

So yea...that was an ending. Honestly, for all I gripe on the show, the ending was at least decent despite being predictable as hell. It would have been a great ending in a better show, but alas.

So that was Darling in the Franxx...yea. I will say, despite my ripping into it for weeks on end, I don't think it's the worse show ever, but man did it waste it's premise so damn hard. Got a post-apocalyptic world where the main force of defense are children piloting mechs...but who cares about that, let's just focus on character drama.

It wasn't terrible though, just supremely boring outside of memes and shitposting. But if you're a sucker for romantic stories, there's something there for you at least. I personally didn't find the romance that well-written outside of a few specific instances, but meh. The environments looked pretty damn good as well as the visuals.

Give it a C- overall.

Not going to watch the ending myself personally. Just seeing Dino-horned Blue eyed Hiro was enough.

Yeah, that was an ending. Don´t have much else to say, really. The series peaked badly at episode 15, and had been running on fumes ever since. It´s nice that we got closure, but it would´ve been nicer to have gotten it when I still cared about any of these people.
