People are flawed.

It just depends on how you act on them.

I mean as far as I can tell Asian people were involved yes, but the two directors are a white guy and a Hispanic guy. The two producers are an Israeli guy and I assume another Hispanic guy (I'm not sure on that last point). It was written by two Asian-american people, but yes I do think the comparison to Avatar isn't invalid, just not perfect.

Really don't get why people make such a big deal of "cancel culture". As if it was some new horrible thing.

Do they really think that people complaining about media and media creators they don't like is something new?

It's been a thing as long as media has been a thing.

But, uh, the toxic social justice left has had issues with Lindsay for a while, right-wingers occasionally have a go at her, and there was some personal drama fairly recently. I think this was probably a last straw situation for her

If I had to guess it was probably made in the heat of the moment after people ganged up on her. I mean it was a very common take to say they look similar. I feel like that was the prevailing take earlier in the raya thread (or maybe it was disney pixar). Not that it's okay what she said, cause it isn't, but this is why If I had a big platform I wouldn't tweet. It's way too easy to let out your stream of consciousness, especially when you're stressed on twitter. I only use the platform very occasionally.

x3 I mean I can definitely see that take. Sometimes I think a lot of film analysis is reaching for takes, but I can see where someone would come up with that one.

Its a big buzzword in right wing circles who usually get called out for being shitty, and now it can refer from anything from being trigger happy on callouts to right wingers whining about consequences.

And while she may not have meant it badly, the you can see it "if you squint" is....yeah....

One of the main differences is that back in the day people had to actually write letters or protest in-person.

Nowadays you can just shitpost on Twitter or Reddit.

Yeah, that definitely gets a "...uuughh" from me.

Yeah I do think that is an important thing to note. It's far easier to do than it was in the past. In the past when you wanted someone cancelled it took effort. It takes far less now. As such I think it's far more visible. If something is easier to do, you can get more people to do it.

...I don't see the problem with any of what she said? "Lindsay thinks all Asian fantasy is the same" is an extremely uncharitable reading of that, and "ya crazies" is almost affectionate

Maybe listen to the people who have a problem with it, then. And maybe consider that people who already feel dismissed out of hand might not appreciate being called "crazies" even in a supposedly affectionate way.

So I made the mistake of actually going to twitter as seeing what they had to say, and jesus christ. The complete "cancel culture" mindset that contra point outlined in her video on it is in full effect.

A full tidal wave of undiluted garbage takes all around. I am very much not surprised Lindsay decided to just delete her twitter than have to put up with that.

Yeah, she said a very not smart thing, and part of me wonders if the need to have a hot take coupled with the undercurrent of breadtube not always being the best at self reflection/interrogation due to bad faith detractors and targeted harassment possibly led to the head space where you comment on something when you have no clue what you are talking about. The first tweet was bad by itself, but it feels like the follow up is what really got people nonplussed.

Edit: And while Twitter can often be overzealous and while I don't doubt that there may be bad faith actors looking to tear her down, it is also uncharitable to not see the reasons why some people took umbrage. The first tweet could be brushed off, but the follow up is at least slightly dismissive.

Seriously, though, can we stop saying "cancel culture"? As somebody else mentioned, people forming a mob isn't new, not even on the internet.

The only reason that term is a "thing" is because bigots like Gina Carano have started publicly facing consequences for their actions in recent years - and they hate facing consequences.

I don't think the point about "over-zealous cancel culture" is exactly helped by listing Bill Burr (a huge mysoginist) and Jim Carrey (a anti-vaxxing lunatic) in that roster of "falsely persecuted poor boys".

I don't disagree that it was a bad take, but people on twitter can be a bit overzealous sometimes. I've noticed they're now dragging up every questionable take she's ever made and using them to make large generalizations about her. Maybe there were better ways she could have responded, but I can see why she decided to leave Twitter instead of dealing with it.

But I'm also not a fan of the snarl-word "cancel culture", and have always been pretty wary about it especially since it started being used by right wing pundits

Twitter is just a bad medium and if I ever get famous, even just internet famous, you will have to read my thought-out blog posts and not the medium that encourages me to write whatever random unfiltered bullshit pops in my brain.

I don’t even do any sort of social media to begin with so I’d have to piggyback off like a coworker or something.

My agent tells me "You should maintain and update a twitter account" I will tell him "I absolutely fucking should not".

I will have on Twitter post and it will be telling people that I've had enough of this website and I'm quitting Twitter forever.

Twitter was a mistake. Hell, I'm still a firm believer that social media in general was a huge mistake, and has brought more harm to society than good.

I think mass and easy interconnectedness is not a mistake but it's certainly been incorrect implemented.

To quote what I said on another site:

Having read a lot of the tweets against her, I don't see how Twitter is in the wrong this time around.

Especially since she took the cowards way out and "BAH-LETED" her account rather than just say "my bad" and move on.
