Now normally I'd argue to keep as much of the original as possible but...

...orgy?

When we say original, are we talking about the book or the miniseries?

The book. It came first.

The orgy is in the book. After the children have defeated IT they all sleep with Becky for...reasons. Honestly, I don't really understand it, and I read the scene only once, because it gives me the willies to read about children that young having sex with each other, never mind one girl having sex with five boys. And I will honestly be thankful if no adaptation ever adds that part of the book (not that I think that there is any danger of that happening).

The book has also a couple very...direct....lines. The most memorable one (I paraphrase, because I read the book in German): "His pants were so tight that you could see the wrinkles on his dick."

That occasionally vulgarity is just how King rolls sometimes. It's not something unique to IT at all.

[up] Sure, but it rolls better in a story about adults than in a story about a bunch of kids.

I wasn't necessarily trying to say it was ok or anything, I should have probably been more clear about that.

Actually, I'd say it's not particularly necessary to humanize the bullies for the film. It wasn't really necessary in the book, but it did add depth. The mini-series didn't give them much development, and I can't say it damaged the actually story at all.

I can say with 100% certainty that the orgy ain't gonna make it into the film. In the book, it does indeed come off as hugely weird and unnecessary. I think the in-story explanation was that they did it to somehow mystically strengthen their bond with each other? Or something?

They were lost and scared in the tunnels and, after defeating It the sex is basically a coming of age thing-no pun intended since i'm pretty sure there's no climax(es).

In a sense, Bev becomes their mother/lover (there's a very clear reference to nursing made too i think) which is, you know, creepy but this is Stephen "my first novel involves explicit menstruation is magic scenes" King.

Yeah I think the man has some pretty interesting ideas but sometimes he gets a weeeee bit carried away.

I think any artist would tell you that's better than censorship.

In Carrie though, it makes a certain sense. Her powers are developing as she matures, and they spike when she starts to menstruate. King's not the first to suggest such a thing, in regards to how psychic abilities might work. As far as I remember, though, It makes no other mention of sex as magic or sex magic or anything else of the kind except in that one scene. The scene feels weird and out of place ("We're scared, lost in the dark, and just defeated an extra-dimensional eldritch abomination...let's all have sex!").

Yep, the magic in IT is pretty much based on belief and sticking together....but it makes little sense to interpret the sticking together part that literally, except that the children belief that it will work. But why should they in this situation?

Is anyone else worried they;re gonna load the movie with jump scares?

Regarding the orgy scene: I didn't interpret it as "sex will fix things," but rather "sex is an indication of growing up, grown ups don't see IT, therefore if we are grown ups, we won't go crazy because of what we just encountered." That's why it calms everyone down, because they have basically passed the Rite of Being an Adult (having sex), therefore they can begin to forget about IT.

That doesn't make it less squicky, but that's how I understood it.

[up][up] Not really...plus, I don't mind jump scares if they are done well and not of the "getting grabbed by the shoulder for no reason" kind. Or, to be precise, I don't mind them if they are not fake-outs.

I don't mind the jump scares as long as there's a good atmosphere to go along with it as well.

Reducing It to only jump scares would be doing it a major disservice but there's a place for them in the film so long as it isn't overdone. Part of what makes the book so effective is that Derry is, if not quite a crapsack world, then at least a crapsack town bordering on an eldritch location - a lot of bad shit goes down and yet there is an air of blindness and almost acceptance that this is just the way things are, due to the influence of It. The atmosphere is really important to making a faithful adaptation.

(Also I hope they make clear that Pennywise is NOT It's 'real' shape or name, nor is It truly a Monster Clown - that's just one of many forms It has a preference for.)

It's funny, because when King wrote It a clown was not a particularly frightening image. That's pretty much the reason IT took the shape of Pennywise the clown, because it's one that, at the time, children would find harmless and be drawn to. That's changed considerably (in no small part because of It I'm sure). They'll have a harder time making Pennywise ever seem appealing to an audience than they will making him frightening.

Makes you wonder what form, if the book was being written now, the monster might take to achieve the same purpose.

Or some generic super Comic-Man (probably bearing a more than passing resemblance to Superman, Batman or Spidey.)... rights permitting, natch.
