...so anyone wonder how a random kid like Miles apparently knew Fisk was a supervillain, while even Peter's nearest and dearest evidently thought they were friends?

Didn't he call him "Kingpin" before that, or am I misremembering?

Miles knew when he saw Fisk kill Spidey. There's no mention of Fisk before that happened. But yeah...that whole Blond Peter and Fisk backstory wasn't elaborated too much. Didn't know what they were going for with Fisk inviting MJ to that party...that feels like they wanted to have Peter B meet Alternate MJ and shoehorned that in. It's a little off that Aunt May knew about Kingpin but MJ didn't. Maybe Blond Peter compartmentalized his life a little bit and hid stuff from her and so on?

[up][up] Misremembering. Miles only ever calls him Kingpin after Pete's murder. This is a common misconception that I think comes from the fact that Fisk is only called Kingpin once before Pete dies, and it's easy to miss.

I figured it was something like Spider-Man: The Animated Series, where while he has a wide array of individual baddies, Kingpin was his true archenemy and the one who by and large either employed or created the others.

Would watch a Miles or Gwen show. Although I thought that only Marvel had the TV rights to Spider-Man?

Spider-Man NOIR feels the most spinoff-able. As does SP//der. You can do Noir like a Bruce Timm BTAS homage. Only problem is Noir is so distinctly Nicolas Cage and he'd be hard to get for a TV cartoon.

I feel Miles and Gwen should be for the big screen sequels only.

Man is Sony doing that thing again where they plan a bunch of sequels and spin-offs before the movie is even out of theaters?

Like Spider-Verse and Miles totally deserve sequels and spin-offs but rapid franchise expansion never ends well.

This song needs more love.

[up][up]I mean, Peter Parker can be on the big and small screen, why can't Miles and Gwen? I realize that Miles Morales and Ghost Spider are relatively new characters and they need the big screen exposure, but comic book characters are known for having more than one incarnation.

Can't say I want to see any cartoon to be honest. A cartoon obviously wouldn't have the budget a movie does so the art would probably be a significant step down. This isn't Disney where the cartoons based off their movies have similar artstyles despite the lower budget (Think of the Emperor's New School for older examples or The Lion Guard for a more recent one.) or the change in artstyle isn't too jarring (Tangled or Big Hero 6's shows compared to their movies.). I don't trust Sony to do either of those well.

I mean, Sony doesn't have the TV rights to any of the characters, even the ones included in the movie, so for Sony to even make a TV cartoon for them, they would have to license the rights from Marvel. I'm pretty sure Marvel would rather make their own cartoon. Which they have. And yes, it does include Miles and Spider-Gwen, just not the versions seen in the movie.

In fact, Marvel Rising also features Spider-Gwen (as Ghost Spider), while not mentioning Spider-Man at all, so I wonder if that takes place in a universe where there is no Spider-Man?

[up]IIRC it does, so they can introduce lesser known versions of heroes like Squirrel Girl and Falcon Cap (which is good, Squirrel Girl has a ton of potential when she looks normal). They put the thing on Youtube for free though, so I’m not sure what the target audience is.

Wasn't there talk about Sony and Marvel collaborating on one? Marvel could certainly do worse than allowing Sony to make a TV show and then share the profits.

Why would you think Sony has the TV rights to only the lesser-known Spider-Man characters?

If Marvel was going to sell them the rights to Spider-Man characters, they'd have sold them the rights to Spider-Man characters. Sony has film rights to the Spider-Man characters, but that's a completely different rights package from TV rights.

Television rights are the reason why the show The Gifted (2017) has to be a joint project between Fox and Marvel despite Fox basically doing all the heavy lifting. Marvel's entitled to a cut of their profits and some executive control because of a special arrangement to let Fox produce a TV show using a set of X-Men rights that they don't have.

Wouldn't both Disney and SONY making a Spider-Man cartoon be kind of problematic from a legal standpoint?

Not really? All it would really need would be an agreement from both Sony and Disney as their aren't really any third party interests.

Not more problematic that Fox making a marvel show pre-merger. It's all a matter of contracts. Marvel can for example easily give Sony permission to use the Spiderman right for this one show. And again, why shouldn't they? They can make a LOT of money of the merch, it makes one of their characters more popular, it ensures that the relationship with Sony becomes tighter so Sony will be less inclined to jank the rug away from under Marvel regarding Spider-Man in the MCU, it's a win-win situation.

The biggest hurdle is whether either Sony or Marvel thinks making a show based off of this interpretation, specifically of the characters would be enough of a financial cash cow to justify splitting profits with the other.

Marvel holds the TV rights to Spider-Man, so they can make any cartoon they want about Miles, Gwen, Spider-Ham, etc. They just can't make one using this specific interpretation of the characters, so there could be no continuity or references to the film if they made their own cartoon. They can make a Miles Morales cartoon, but not an Into the Spider-Verse Miles Morales cartoon.

Sony has a copyright for their specific interpretation, but doesn't have the TV rights to the franchise. So even though Marvel can't make a cartoon featuring Sony's version of the characters, Sony can't make a cartoon featuring any version of the characters.

Thus, Sony and Marvel would need to reach some sort of contract agreement to let Sony license the TV rights in a presumably limited capacity in order to produce the show. Which, as discussed above, there exists precedent for in the live-action X-Men shows.

It can be done. Sony just needs assurance that the viewership will be worth it before they'll commit to any such thing.

Haven't the cartoons Sony used to make when they still had the rights all been successful?
