A really cool article by Matt Zoller Seitz about the impact of the trilogy.

If anybody wants to know how America saw itself in the eighties, the "Future" films are an unbeatable way to answer the question. They don't just show you what Hollywood thought America (at least white suburban/small town America) was about in 1985, they show you what Hollywood thought the fifties and the 1880s were about, and what the future would bring.

I love how when the film was first pitched, this was the response by studio execs in the early 80s:

All studios except Disney: This teen film isn't raunchy enough.

Disney: We love it... except for the creepy scenes where the young mom is hitting on her future son. Could you remove those?

and what the future would bring.
You know, Part II wasn't actually what Zemeckis and Spielberg thought 2015 would be like. They knew that any serious attempt at prediction would probably be laughably wrong. So they didn't try; they just made 2015 a shinier, more exaggerated version of 1985 with super-technology everywhere.

^ And yet it's Hilarious in Hindsight how much they got wrong. And yet it's doubly Hilarious in Hindsight how much they didn't foresee or what we have now that is more advanced than what they wrote.

And triply Hilarious in Hindsight that the Cubs still haven't won the World Series. (They're only a couple innings away from the time of this writing from being swept out of the NLCS.)

Back to the Future day was fun. I love the concept of being able to live through a famous "future" day. Weird to think the future of that movie is now the past. I should probably watch the movie, though, for cultural relevance's sake. I've never seen it.

Also strange how ridiculous they overaged the future versions of the characters. They're only supposed to be in thwir forties, but the movie gave them greying hair like they're 60.

I'm in my (very) late thirties, and I've been greying a lot in the last years.

Also, greying the hair is the easiest way to age a character without a lot of make-up (and it's very effective).

My parents are in their early 50s. My dad's hair has been greying since I was very young and is now more grey than black, and my mom's hair would be grey if she didn't dye it.

Your apparent age is always relative, not everyone looks the same. If you take good care of yourself you look younger, weight alone has that kind of effect. The first Back to the Future really showcases that with Lorraine and George. In the original 1985 Marty left from Lorraine is heavier and more dowdy, George is hunched over and his hair is greasy. When Marty returns they look 5-10 years younger almost solely because of their energy and vitality, but Lorraine is also skinnier and George stands up straight.

I should have popped up sooner.

This movie series is really a testament to how things we loved in our youth can still influence us today.

You know, while I acknowledge that some parts of the series may be less interesting then others for some, I like all three movies.

Too bad the writers had no plans for Jennifer at all, and just dumped her as soon as they got the chance. Seems like a bit of a waste.

I wonder if Marty ever told her that he left her in that bad future for a bit.

One could also argue that the Future is filtered by Marty's perceptions a bit. Thus Future!Marty looks significantly more aged than he should just simply because Marty is thinking 'Holy shit! I'm old!'.

While the movies may not have aged perfectly, they are still what made both Robert Zemeckis and Rick and Morty possible, so I think they deserve much praise for those things.

It can't be helped.

Watching the first film recently, I realised that the 1985 does feel as old to me as 1955 feels to Marty. This may be quite logical, but it was a bit of a shock, especially since I remember watching the film around early 90s and finding nothing wrong with 1985.

The DeLorean Motor Company of Humble, Texas (referred to as DMCH, to distinguish it from the original DMC) hopes to start producing new DMC-12s by 2017. Recent legislation has relaxed federal standards for small-volume carmakers, such as those who make replicas of the AC Cobra, and other designs at least 25 years old.
