Maximum word people need to stop saying.
To pity someone is to tell them "I feel bad about being better than you."How old is Mulan supposed to be in the Disney animated version?
According to the Disney wiki 16.
"War without fire is like sausages without mustard." - Jean Juvénal des UrsinsShe'll probably get an Age Lift in this remake. Otherwise, some folks are gonna get all squicky for some reason...

Mulan is only 16? I always figured she was early 20s.
Historically arranged marriages (chosen by the parents or other authority figures) or ritualistic marriages (putting yourself on parade for a potential spouse) happen at a fairly young age, sometimes as young as 12. Having her be 16 and on the cusp of adulthood is the best bet while avoiding too much Values Dissonance. Making her be early 20's and more independent would take away from the significance of alienating the Matchmaker.
I always thought she was 18.
"If I reach for the stars, you can't hold me back"It's often the case for the Disney Princesses to look older than they are. Aurora looked and sounded 20 when she was just under 16, Ariel as well. Might be the effects of Dawson Casting leaking into animation.
Snow White, Rapunzel, Merida and Tiana (who IIRC is supposed to actually be in her early twenties or 19 at most) are the only princesses who actually look their intended age, although Ariel might be a special case, since God knows how merpeople years translate into human years.
Both of them, then.
To pity someone is to tell them "I feel bad about being better than you."Now I want to see Chow Yun Fat in the movie, maybe as Mulan's pops.
It's over Anakin! I have the high ground! It's cute seeing people compare two bible movies (heavily propagandized by white westerners) and a completely fictional universe type of film like Airbender to a movie not even released yet.
Yeah guys I'm sure disney will commit suicide by having Channing tatum play a chinese soldier.
Yeah guys, that's so likely dude, because two movies (from the same source) with a european modified slant over time combined with a completely fictional setting entirely are easily the same as 7th century CHINA.
Not even conservative mcRepublican Southerner white man will fall for that.
Stop panicking.
The world is inherently chaotic no amount of religion, conspiracy or wishful thinking will change that, accept it, and move on.Worth noting is that all three of those films flopped. Disney surely wants to do what makes more money than what makes less.
Exactly.
that's another thing.
Disney *tends* to be smart.
The world is inherently chaotic no amount of religion, conspiracy or wishful thinking will change that, accept it, and move on.I just find it very unlikely because I cannot for the life of me think of a single movie without at least one visible white person in it. I'd love to have them avoid this but it never happens and I will remain skeptical until they make a definitive statement.
I don't think the problem is with white characters being visible per se (there were probably white-skinned Persians in China at some point during that time), but if the white character(s) gets the main role or a role that's too relevant and takes one out of the movie (e.g. Keanu Reeves in 47 Ronin).

"Dear internet we aren't racist and we issued this statement because we are obligated to address all the whiny complaints made about our products on the internet. Signed Disney."
Like that?
"War without fire is like sausages without mustard." - Jean Juvénal des UrsinsIt is possible there was one or two white people but Asian actors get so few roles as is. Why take any more away from them?
No need to be rude. They just need to make it clear the cast will be entirely Asian. That's it.
Then, let's wait for the cast of this movie to be revealed, then, in order to draw our own conclusions. D'accord?
I will move on and wait provided people stop trivializing this and acting like it's a fictitious problem.
Ok, but this is a thread about a single movie, not 'Hollywood's tendency to ignore non-white people/engage into whitewashing'. Let's focus on this movie, and not on that general topic, which can be covered either in the Race thread or through a thread about that general topic on this sub-forum.
(I should've stepped in this thread from the very start - same as with the GITS Live-Action remake/adaptation)

No, you should stop automatically assuming everyone in the movie business is racist.
the problem lies with your assumptions.

The world is inherently chaotic no amount of religion, conspiracy or wishful thinking will change that, accept it, and move on.Yea, preemptively complaining isn't doing any good. There are problems in movie business but they are FAR less severe than they used to be.
It'd be nice to see an all-asian cast, for the live-action characters at least. Which could be all of them for all I know. Is the dragon in the actual legend?
If nothing else, they should at least try to make the main cast Chinese.
As long as Shyamalan doesn't direct, it should be fine
