Too many "LOOK WE'RE BEING EDGY AN' SCARY AN' SHIT!" moments.
If it has to rely on jump-scares to do it's job, it's not doing it's job properly.
The original was scary because it was scary. Weird shit was going down. There were ghosts.

Your momma's so dumb she thinks oral sex means talking dirty.I'm on the fence about this. Good director, good lead actor, but the idea of a remake of a properly frightening movie is... I dunno, it would be like trying to remake, say, Suspiria or The Exorcist. Somethings are really better being left in the pedestal.

I think this looks pretty decent. It's pretty bombastic-looking for a horror movie and sometimes I might cry bullshit about that. But the original was, too.
Cast looks good.

Since I never saw the original (I know, I know, burn me at the stake), I couldn't take the trailer seriously. I just kept thinking 'oh, so this is what the episode of Family Guy was parodying'.
I'm a bit insulted by it as well.
Poltergeist worked because of it's utter creepiness, as opposed to constant jumpscares.
Your momma's so dumb she thinks oral sex means talking dirty. The copious jump scares seem like a bad sign to me.
I'm looking forward to the car chase. Tyler Perry will be playing Tangina.

Sadly enough. I definitely won't be seeing a remake of Suspiria, even if it manages to be good.
People have been trying to remake it, but unsuccessfully. There are also legal issues (which might be the reason), so you might wanna wait a little longer.

I'm sorely disappointed they felt the need to give it the Paranormal Activity treatment.
Paranormal Activity's approach actually worked, why wouldn't they try in the same vein?
New theme music also a boxBecause they already ran it into the ground years ago?
That was with their films,a different film can try a similar approach, they may even do it better.
New theme music also a boxWritten by the guy who wrote Rise Of The Guardians and Oz The Great And Powerful. Thoughts from anyone who's seen them?
Ho, talk save us!How is this like Paranormal Activity? It's not found footage. The only similarity that I see is both of them have ghosts/spirits, which are in no way unique to Paranormal Activity.
I wasn't scared of the original Poltergeist but this version does scare me. I might be in the minority but I think this will be one of the few remakes that'll be as good as the original.
Jason has come back to kill for Mommy.I just got back from the theater, and I can say this:
I've never seen the original Poltergeist, but I'm sure it was scarier than this. This one had only a couple of real scares, and both were jump scares. The film jumped straight into the Paranormal stuff a little too quickly in my opinion, and the action ended before I could get a proper hold on it.
But it was still a decent way to spend a Saturday night: with a mediocre horror movie and popcorn. I won't be having nightmares, but that was okay I suppose.
If what you're saying is true, glad I spared some time. I'll stick to the original, then.
The original Poltergeist knew how to built up the tension. The movie spends a lot of time just showing weird stuff which goes on around the house, things which look harmless. And then it gets worse and worse. It is quite eerie.
There is not much happening in terms of gore and actual killing (it is PG-13 after all), but there doesn't need to. Some of the effects look a little bit dated by now, but most of them hold up very, very well.
It certainly instilled a fear of clowns into the mind of a lot of people back then.

Plus it had Jerry Goldsmith's dark score.
Watch SymphogearI think it was initially rated R and then changed into PG after an appeal because the PG-13 didn't came into the effect until later. I think Spielberg was the one who pushed for a PG-13 rating, but that had more to do with Indiana Jones and Gremlins than Poltergeist. I see it as a PG-13, though, because that's what it should be. Just like I will never accept the notion that Pinocchio is suitable for all ages.
Well. This is happening.
Now, before we all bemoan this remake's existence, I feel that it's worth noting who's in the director's chair.
Gil Kenan.
If that name sounds familiar, there's most likely a reason. He's the director of a certain movie called Monster House, which also dealt with spirits IIRC.
So, IMO, that piece of reference for the director could be a sign that this remake is not entirely doomed to be bad.
