Misused: BerserkButton

Also you guys seem to be leaving me out when I conceded and figured that Jack-Jack doesn't count because his behavior over the cookie isn't enough of a contrast to his typical character, IMO. It's okay, I'm not super offended, just clarifying my take.

It's been awhile, but I think it's time to close this particular discussion.

Thus far Warjay77, Delibirda, gjjones, Unicorndance, mightymewtron and myself have weighed in that Jack Jack is too young to consider his Demon Imp tantrums are proof of a Berserk Button verses being just normal toddler tantrum behavior at that age.

Currently the Berserk Button example in Jack Jack's character section is just commented out and I would have been content to simply leave it that way pending further discussion on this topic.

However, perkeez has now twice (7/20 and 8/9) made a bunch of additions and modifications to the Characters page of The Incredibles and also slipped in the uncommenting of the Berserk Button entry for Jack Jack (with no edit reason). So I feel the entry should just be deleted to remove any further temptation.

This is unfortunate, but I keep feeling that perkeez just doesn't have an interest in playing well with others and respecting a consensus that doesn't favor his interpretation. Even now his comment tagline has an antagonistic vibe with "Just trying to improve whatever pages I see, while dealing with people who stop me from doing so."

This is an edit war at this point. We should bring it to ATT. Combined with this mess, it doesn't bode well with me.

• Berserk Button: Don't disrespect or otherwise show disloyalty to "Gil". And don't try to interrupt when he needs to be alone with Shinn.

Should we remove it or keep it?

It's clear some people have a problem with me making genuine efforts to help out around the place, even if they are occasionally in vain. False accusations have been made against me, which goes against the spirit of this site.

Just trying to improve any page that needs it.

I noticed that BerserkButton.One Piece has a lot of misuse. A lot of the examples listed on there seem like pretty reasonable things to get mad about. These are just at the start of the page:

• As each member of the Straw Hat Pirates has a lifelong ambition, disrespecting these dreams are the easiest way to piss them off.
• The whole Straw Hat Crew: Don't treat people like garbage or that they are somehow beneath you. A good chunk of the crew have suffered this at one time or another and won't tolerate people that act this way. Just ask the World Noble that Luffy sent flying with a punch.

Yeah, that's misuse. Those look like natural things for people to get upset about.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

Maybe a pinned post as well outlining the requirements of the trope for easy reference. Ex, a Berserk Button must be...

• Reoccurring: It must occur at least twice, or be stated to occur multiple times.
• Disproportionate: The character's anger must be far outside what would be considered reasonable relative to the provocation. Being angry at someone harming loved ones is not unreasonable: that's normal human behavior.
• Rare: It's a berserk button, not a berserk minefield. If there's a long list of innocuous things that can set a character off, it's a Hair-Trigger Temper.

And as always, a Berserk Button requires sufficient context to explain what the trigger is and why the character's reaction is disproportion: "Do not do X around this character" is not context.

I think one of our first efforts can be to just go through the misuse folders on the wick check and remove all of those wicks. It'll at least make a dent.

Well, now I feel like all my work was wasted. Plus, I really do think a rename is the only way to truly stop misuse. A cleanup thread would likely be needed anyway, sure, but without it, how will the tropers who misuse it know anything has changed?

That's the thing. Nothing has changed. It was determined pretty much immediately that the definition wasn't the problem, it just needed a serious cleanup effort.

I suppose it is just that I suspect tropers are reading “Berserk Button” and thinking it means “thing that makes character go berserk/mad”, whereas a name like Recurring Ridiculous Rage Trigger would get the definition across better.

I agree, but with almost 30K wicks nobody really wants to spend months doing a full-on rename effort.

It was suggested that we can fix the description though, and I do think that we just all need to be more willing to cut misuse when we see it.

Most people already think Berserk Button means "someone's pet peeve" so it's going to take a lot to change that.

I think adding commented out links to the clean up thread isn't a bad idea

I've made Sandbox.Berserk Button to work on the description: I've already made some notes. Problematictic lines are in red, my comments are in green.

Sandbox comments seem good.

Admittedly the more I think about this the more I agree with Gaston and Macron; I've been saying for a while that not all issues are TRS issues, and sometimes a high amount of misuse isn't in and of itself a reason to go to the TRS. Sometimes, yeah, you just gotta get the mop out.
