But the all-black outfit, actually being part of human society, having musical interests and latee preferences, the whole "evil truck" and modular design of the Eggmobile, working for the gobernment, heck him being subtle at all when he tried to investigate Tom's house.
They got his personality but everything else about him would have made me go "why did this need to be added?"
I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!I think it's mostly Jim Carrey's raw charisma. He's always been a great actor, comedic or otherwise, and his performance was the only thing people liked in the early trailers back when the sonic design sucked.
Speaking of the bad guy, I've often wondered: why do they keep switching between calling him "Eggman" and "Dr. Robotnik"? :S
I like to keep my audience riveted.Eggman's a nickname (which he takes a liking to despite being made as a taunt) while Robotnik's his actual name.
SoundCloud^^Or rather, one is the western name other is japanese original name
This started in Sonic Adventure 1, where the western side of Sonic had to integrate the Japanese stuff, like humans and such, so they came up with Eggman being an insult. In the first confrontation with Sonic and Robotnik, Sonic mockingly calls him Eggman, while Robotnik angrily states his name is Robotnik. So yeah, the heroes call him Eggman, while Gamma calls him Dr. Robotnik.
Though the Japanese version has acknowledged Robotnik as a last name, like for Gerald, Eggman's grandfather among others cameos, it has never aknowledged Robotnik as a name for Eggman. Some sites even say Eggman's real name is unknown.
But i think we can all agree Dr. Robotnik is an infinitely cooler name than Eggman.

I'll teach you a lesson about just how cruel the world can be. That's my job, as an adult.I always assumed even as a child that Robotnik was his real name & Eggman is a nickname that stuck & he just rolled with it.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."As a kid who's first 3d Sonic game was Heroes, i was confused on who this Eggman was, and where Dr. Robotnik was.
Oh lost innocence.
I'll teach you a lesson about just how cruel the world can be. That's my job, as an adult. My first sonic was the cartoon with Scratch and Grounder
New theme music also a boxTo my understanding
- the original name in Japanese was always Eggman
- the Western games changed this to Robotnik and the cartoons/comic most of us grew up with stuck with
- then came Sonic Adventure 2 where they decided to use Eggman
- the comics/this film/fanon took advantage of this, and the movie was the first time Sonic using it as an insult got acknowledged
Adventure 1 is where they started using Eggman, while 2 is where Eggman actually stuck. Ironically giving the name Robotnik to his grandfather.

SoundCloudx7 ...Eh, I'm fine with Eggman, don't really find "Robotnik" that much "cooler"...
I assure you, I'm a completely trustworthy person. Is it weird that I actually find Eggman cooler than Robotnik just because its song reference?
Maybe that's where that AoSTH episode and that early Archie Sonic ish got Eggman from XD
The Protomen enhanced my life.AOSTH constantly had Robotnik making egg puns, iirc, even though they were going with the altered name.
"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain. When someone says 'Eggman' to me it conjurers up a specific image, that of a comical rotund guy, bold as egg too, when I hear Robotnic I see the mad scientist
I think the film goes with 2 because they assume you couldn't take a guy named Eggman as seriously as you would Robotnic
New theme music also a boxI mean... That's kinda the point? Just look at him◊.
You wouldn't expect a guy looking like that to use animals as living batteries for killer robots, build huge space stations or using supernatural forces to mess up with reality in order to build amusement parks of evil... And yet that's what he'll do.
'Cause he's Eggman
I assure you, I'm a completely trustworthy person. He's also a cartoon character, hard to translate into a live action actor and not make them look ridiculous
New theme music also a boxIn a bit of a Rewatch Bonus, I hadn't noticed that not just the drones, but nearly all of Robotnik's robots had an egg-theme until way later. The Fridge Brilliance of them ditching the "animal" or "soldier" themes in favor of just everything looking like eggs made me smile.
@Carrey's Eggbotnik antics.
My favorite part of Carrey's Eggman is how well he hits what makes the character fun and unique, even when he's doing stuff that aren't literally in the series already. It's an odd comparison, but it's like how Heath Ledger's Joker is on the surface little like the comics version, but perfectly hits the spirit and concept of the character.
His loyalty to the government aside (I felt like they were leading up to a "he wants to take over" plot, but then never actually did it), I could imagine Eggman doing most of the stuff he does in the movie in the games - even the dance scene.
Also, if we're gonna E.G.G.M.A.N., we gotta do it right:

This is one thing I never got... People who prefer "Robotnik" and think "Eggman" is silly, what do they think about Death Egg and all other egg-named inventions he has?
Carrey definitely captured the idea that Robotnik/Eggman has to be both hysterical to watch and a threat to the hero.
^ I mean, the series has the Badniks, most of which are animal themed rather than egg shaped. While the egg-themed robots are common, this movie is when the robot drones are really obviously egg shaped (to justify Sonic giving him the nickname) rather than cartoony robots.
Yeah, Carrey really brings across that sort of "entitled and petty bastard that no one likes" mood that Robotnik often has.
