The first episode is on YouTube

General reactions:

  • It’s funny. Not super funny. But not really bad either. It does the thing Sonic Boom did where a lot of the humor seems meant to come from explaining its jokes and having characters say exactly what’s going on, but without that show’s constant sense of meta sarcasm that made that sort of thing *really* shine.
  • Looniversity is explicitly a college in this series, whereas it was basically a high school in the original. Interestingly, this means a lot of the school humor is entirely different.
  • Plucky is so far the funniest character, which is hilarious to me because imo he was by far the least funny character in the original.
  • This first episode is strictly a Buster, Hampton and Plucky story. Babs is in it, but only really as a support. I dunno, I think they should’ve led with a Babs and Buster story.
  • The voices are going to take some getting used to, especially Hampton’s.

Anyone find it nice seeing how the Looney Tunes characters are in more active roles in the plot this time with General Hogspital putting Witch Hazel and Wile E Coyote in prominent roles.

[up] Yeah, I like that.

Also, the original show never really took full advantage of its school setting and usually just did whatever it wanted

But this show absolutely is 100% uses the college setting as its main plot/premise and sticks to it. All while still being a Zany Cartoon.

There werea number of episodes of the original that were entirely school-centric, but yeah, the original was by no means limited to that. I don't know, though, that we can really say from a single episode what the focus of the new series will be.

I like that they're keeping to the thing that made Tiny Toon different from Animaniacs: that (while Tiny Toon had its gag short episodes on occasion, and Animaniacs had its longer stories on occasion) generally Animaniacs was the largely gag centric film-short homage series, and Tiny Toon was the largely character-centric longform story series.

For those that have Max, the entire first season of the show is available to view.

Not sure if I'm allowed to discuss this, but I really love Fifi Le Fume's new voice actress in Looniversity. And this is coming from a guy who already likes Kath Soucie's performance as the character in the original series.

Apparently Pumbaa made a lawyer-friendly cameo in one episode. https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_20230910_1036242.png

With all the memes about women choosing a bear over a man, Hollywood might wanna get on an 'East of the Sun and West of the Moon' adaptation

probably easier to design a warthog character if you have good reference for an existing one

in this case Pumba

Plucky is so far the funniest character, which is hilarious to me because imo he was by far the least funny character in the original.

I don't know. Plucky had his moments. The sketches with his baby self for one thing.

And my personal favourite:

Oh wow. It's been so long that I totally forgot it was Hampton doing that.

....he's a damned good Stunt Duck.[lol]

I think this show might need its own character page vs sharing the first show's character page.

They really took the opportunity to make almost everyone very different from the show, down to some of them having slightly different or their own divergent character beats.

[up] Yeah, just looking at Babs and Buster alone is enough to tell me this is an Alternate Continuity with vastly different characterizations.

Yeah, they go pretty hard on new Babs and Buster being the designated Everyman in this continuity, being more or less the same kind of character with the difference being more the kinds of stories they get rather than they themselves being significantly distinct.

In contrast, they make everyone else a bit more extreme. But even outside the surface level there’s a lot of new major character decisions, like Hampton being a "Well Done, Son" Guy in this continuity, Plucky being a Former Child Star, he and Buster explicitly being frenemies / Sitcom Archnemesis, etc.

So, yeah. It’ll need its own character page. It actually remind me a lot of The Looney Tunes Show, which gave everyone new personalities to fit the sitcom pastiche it was doing.

One thing I've notice is that they're not Breaking the Fourth Wall as much. The original show always opened with Buster and Babs greeting the "Toonsters" watching, and they always had plenty of asides throughout. Here it appears that the fourth wall is firmly in place.

At most, Buster pauses the episode and does an aside glance to the audience in the tenth ep.

Yeah, I’ve noticed they shifted their meta humor to something more similar to how Phineas and Ferb or Sonic Boom did it.

Instead of directly breaking the wall, the character constantly just talk about or lampshade the jokes or tropes as they happen in-universe.

Perhaps because the Animaniacs reboot is handling the more direct Meta Humour.

Also, Buster and Plucky being Sitcom archenemies is interesting, since I kinda got the impression that was Plucky's relationship with Babs instead.

Though that's mostly from that one ep where they're competing to get the most pictures in the yearbook.

They may also be taking inspiration from Bugs and Daffy's dynamic for Buster and Plucky in this series too.

Yeah, they go pretty hard on new Babs and Buster being the designated Everyman in this continuity,

Which is weird since she was always the wackier one in the original show. So much so that she was invited to stay in wackyland.
