[up] Thanks!

  • Also Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is getting moved to Nicktoons at 10:30pm on Saturdays. That sucks. And now the cartoon community is even more up in arms with Nickelodeon moreso than they've ever been.

Last Friday, Nickelodeon content are suddenly back to Netflix after a 6.5 years absence! A list of Nick shows currently streaming on Netflix: VICTORIOUS - the complete series Sam and Cat- Only the first 18 episodes Bella and the Bulldogs- first season

The following Nickelodeon Original Movies streaming on Netflix are The Boy Who Cried Werewolf, Big Time Rush, Jinxed, A Fairly Odd Summer, 100 Things to Do Before High School (Pilot), Massively Mixed-Up Middle School Mystery, Liar Liar Vampire, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library, and Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie.

Nick theatrical movies streaming on Netflix: Good Burger, & the first two Rugrats movies.

Netflix originals: Pinky Malinky, Static Cling, & Enter the Florpus.

So far, that’s 19 Nick content on Netflix. I know that’s not enough animated content but I won’t mind Nick and Netflix renewing their contract. Anything to prevent Netflix from going out of business during the middle of the streaming wars.

Netflix announces multi-year content deal with Nickelodeon for new animated series/films and all-new IP.

Remarkable turnaround for a relationship that presumably collapsed six years ago. Then again, with Disney+ now out in the open you gotta make difficult choices.

Despite the Netflix deal, they're also bringing content to CBS All Access. Nick's owner Viacom is re-merging with CBS in December.

The Ren And Stimpy documentary will be screening at Sundance next year.

It's been in gestation for quite a while now. Once the Buzzfeed article hit they decided they had to address John K.'s pedophilia, and so got an interview with Robyn Byrd... and then, later, John K. wanted to be interviewed despite wanting nothing to do with the project beforehand (because Bob Camp and Billy West, among others, were involved and would have told the truth about how he treated them). They did, and I'm not sure how they handled it, but they are apparently clear John caused a lot of hurt.

In any case, they apparently managed to find the real-life Anthony from "A Visit to Anthony," so for R&S fans there's that. I wonder how his dad felt about his depiction in the cartoon? (Or how he felt about John using it to work out his daddy issues?)

It seems like Nickelodeon has a habit of sending shows to Nicktoons that do not get Spongebob level ratings right off the bat, where they are quickly forgotten about and canceled. It seems Disney Channel will bring over shows from Disney XD that become popular to the main Disney Channel, so Disney doesn't treat Disney XD like some animation graveyard like Nickelodeon does with Nicktoons. Nicktoons seems like a fine place for reruns of old shows, but it seems like the kiss of death for a new show. Recent shows like Harvey Beaks, Welcome to the Wayne and Rise of the TMNT are the latest shows to suffer this fate, but there are many others:

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/ScrewedByTheNetwork/Nickelodeon

I suppose at one time you argue that there is only so much room on Nickelodeon's schedule (though there are a lot of Spongebob reruns on that schedule), but now there is a bunch of streaming options that would be better than Nicktoons at this point. How many people have Nicktoons vs. a Netflix account and frankly CBS All Access could use some more original non-Star Trek content. Maybe Welcome to the Wayne or Harvey Beaks would have done well on a streaming platform if they did not get Spongebob level ratings right away on the main network, but sending them to Nicktoons to be forgotten about was a waste. It also burns bridges with creators, I am not sure C. H. Greenblatt would ever want to work with Nickelodeon again.

Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir was on Nickelodeon, only get treated poorly by them and seems to be doing better on Netflix. DreamWorks was making cartoons for Nickelodeon for a while, but Nick started to treat those shows badly and DreamWorks switched working with Netflix instead. She-Ra and Voltron would have been treated horribly by Nickelodeon. I think the Rocko's Modern Life and Invader Zim movies would not have worked on the main Nickelodeon channel but worked well on Netflix. A lot of articles and videoes on Nicklodeon's decline:

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.mercurynews.com/2018/04/28/sorry-spongebob-more-kids-choosing-netflix-over-nickelodeon/amp/

Really Nickelodeon should be creating more content for streaming and stop screwing over creators as they did with the creative team behind Harvey Beaks. Viacom is the smallest of the big entertainment companies out there, they do not have the luxury of throwing away good content and alienating talented creators.

[up] Give it time. Nick has been struggling for years and they never learn. Nick will most likely change with the times in someway or die out. Their alienation has already taken major effect this year with how they are relishing on their own nostalgia and when that fails they move on leaving people bitter and not want to work with them leaving them with only their nostalgia. Many of the shows Nick released for 2019 are proof enough that Nick has to rely on other factors that have already worked because what they make today often can't sustain their target demographic's attention. I can imagine behind the scenes the studios are worried but put up a poker face because fear isn't marketable. Nick already has dug their grave but won't lie in it because they want to dig deeper.

Judging Nickelodeon based on its content right now:

  • Animated Shows: They only have 3 original shows, which is too small, but they are countering that with the Loud House, Casagrandes, and Spongebob ultimately being well received.
  • Live-Action Comedy: All That season 11 has garnered strong reviews, I just don't watch it. Henry Danger right now is the most polarizing show on the network and I've seen enough of its good and bad traits to see why. But Knight Squad and Cousins for Life have gotten nothing so I can't say their Live action comedy isn't great.
  • The game shows naturally do well.
  • Unscripted series: America's Most Musical Family is like the only unscripted show they air right now and that's probably doing decent.

  • Acquired programming:
    • Live action: Power Rangers Beast Morphers: definitely viewed as a improvement critically, but being at 8am isn't necessarily helping it in the ratings, though allegedly its doing well in toy sales. But
    • Animated: They got Alvinn, and two Lego shows. Alvin's only on because it makes them money, Lego shows tend to do decently so its hard to say.

  • Future programs:
  • It's Pony's getting a lot of people excited.
  • Glitch Techs has the hype train.
  • Kamp Koral has split people in half, but the fandom has admitted they might give it a chance
  • Rugrats revival, people are excited.
  • Wonder Park's tv show was supposed to premiere by now but nothing's happened so far.

Overall Nick has 8 decent to great shows, 4 mixed and polarized shows, and at least 5 to 7 shows we know are coming. They aren't doing that great. The issue isn't the content but more so the lack of content, availability to watch them, a lack of reruns, a lack of support for some shows, and the controversies with Nickelodeon's past might haunt them if they don't do any changes quickly.

Well, here we are, Sundance has started and the Ren and Stimpy documentary is premiering.

(Incidentally, look at the picture of John. The facelifts must be unraveling...)

The first review is out as well... I should note that the documentary was deep into production when the Buzz Feed article broke. They had to overhaul it to deal with the news, but evidently not quite as well as they could have. Nice to see that John doesn't come off well at all, though.

The directors are evidently much easier on John K. than I would have been, and they've talked to people who despise him and will tell you why. Bob Camp's been a part of the documentary since it started, and I can speak from personal experience - don't ever bring John up around him.

For those who where worried for the show and for those who wanted it to be a major success I bring GOOD NEWS!

It's Pony had the biggest animated debut since Kid Danger with a 2.1 rating (453,000 viewers) with Kids 2-11 and a 1.9 rating (250,000 viewers) with kids 6-11

Nickelodeon’s latest animated series It’s Pony scored the network’s biggest animated series launch since 2018’s The Adventures of Kid Danger (Monday, Jan 15, at 7pm (ET/PT), posting solid double-digit gains over last year with Kids 2-11 (2.1/453K, up +24%) and Kids 6-11 (1.9/250K, +27%).

The Saturday morning premiere (Jan. 18 at 11:30 a.m.) also drew 959,000 Total Viewers. And, the series ranked as TV’s #2 animated telecast for the week with Kids 2-11, behind only Sponge Bob Square Pants.

It’s Pony is an original 2D-animated buddy comedy that follows the life of an average girl named Annie, her (almost) average family, and what happens when an enthusiastic, unpredictable and carefree talking pony comes to live with them in their city apartment.

The first animated comedy series to be greenlit for the U.S. from Nickelodeon International, It’s Pony is created by Ant Blades, based off a short of the same name from Nickelodeon’s 2015 International Animated Shorts Program.

I'm almost afraid to ask what happens when you do...

Ren and Stimpy probably meant a lot to Bob, and he kept the show going when John couldn't, so to have the legacy of a show you helped make get tainted because the asshat you share creator credit with just won't stop flying off the handle must be really hard for him... sad

It's not that bad. Just don't bring it up around him because he hates the guy. He's a great person, has a ton of funny stories, overall the kind of guy you want to meet at a con... but he'd prefer to not talk about John. He'll talk about anything but.

He's made it clear how he feels about John giving him his blessing to continue the show and then going around saying Bob stabbed him in the back many times. I can only imagine how it was after the news broke - so many people asking him about it, some even blaming him for being complicit (he wasn't)... so if you meet him at a con, don't mention John. It just won't help.

Considering the absolute dumpster fest that was Cans Without Labels which was made by just John himself I am pretty sure Bob Camp was likely the reason why Ren And Stimpy was so good. I mean he was the creative director of it.

I don't envy that man for having to deal with the shitshow of a person that is John K. though and I don't blame him for hating him.

[up][up] Bob and all the other people, as he'll tell you. Of course, even he will tell you that if it weren't for all these people coalescing around John the show would have never been made and they'd still be at Filmation or something. But if you look at the history of the show it becomes apparent he needed them more than they needed him. Look at Adult Party Cartoon.

Oddly enough, the new documentary doesn't seem to go into what happened behind the scenes at APC. Which is a shame. If you want to go down that "troubled genius" route that they seem to be going, you can't ignore how he was the engine of his own destruction. I don't know if anyone has seen the documentary Overnight, but if they went into the production of APC it would be heavily reminiscent of that.
