Suyane Moreira, yeah, but her costume and overall look (as opposed to just her physical shape) was drawn from Beyoncé and Balenciaga (a Spanish fashion brand).

"I was half-joking, but wait, was Doomsday Clock still going on when we started hearing 5G rumors?"

Yeah. Doomsday Clock #12, which mentions 5G, was published on December 18, 2019. Bleeding Cool's first 5G posts (the ones which talked about Jon, Luke, and a then-unknown Wonder Woman, as well as the basic 5G concept) were published in June, August, and October of 2019.

Huh that chalkboard sure is interesting. 4 legions are presumably og, reboot, threeboot, and bendis. The daughter for the jsa thing might be Jay's as there was a garrick child mentioned to be on the weird lost child dimension in the stargirl special.

(!!!)

"Legions of F—" could be "Legions of Four"!

OMG, I actually speculated that it'd be LOSH on the DC Reddit, but I seriously didn't think about it until you brought it up like that!

Well, hey, if they finally acknowledge how the Bendis Legion clicks with the previous incarnations, then great! (Ten bucks say the Bendis Legion are imperfect clones.)

No the bendis legion will be flashpoints future. Like how threeboot was retconned to be earth prime/33. And retrofit was retconned to be earth 2

With Yara I think the lesson here is they prolly should have had a Brazilian writer onboard instead of a white woman from Idaho.

If anything the delays were prolly Joelle Jones fault to some degree as I recall hearing that during her tenure on Catwoman she can't maintain a weekly schedule.

So they really picked a bad writer to handle Yara entirely.

[up] It's worth noting that Joelle Jones created Yara. As in, the character wouldn't exist without her.

https://www.comicsbeat.com/c2e2-21-wonder-woman-80th-anniversary-panel/ "Jones then took the mic, explaining how the process went for introducing Yara Flor to the DC Universe. At the time, she had been writing Catwoman, but was starting to get tired of writing the same book. During a big pitch meeting with DC editorial, she threw out the idea of Yara and they loved it and wanted it for what can be assumed to be the 5G initiative. However, when that fell apart, editorial still liked the character enough to ask to have her placed in the role of Wonder Girl."

Jones could have had a co-writer or at least a sensitivity reader, but the basic premise of "boisterous Brazilian Wonder Woman who meets figures from indigenous Brazilian mythology" was invented by Jones. Dan Didio wanted some kind of new character to be created to be the 5G Wonder Woman, but that specific premise was invented by Jones and wouldn't exist without her pitch.

The five best Superman writers are Dan Jurgens, Jeph Loeb, Geoff Johns, Kurt Busiek, and Peter J. Tomasi.

I think she probably should have consulted with actual experts on Brazilian culture though.

Research is always important if your going to do a work on another culture

Prolly the most cringy and unintentionally racist thing is how every Brazilian person is drawn with the exact same brown skin tone.

Like Brazil is a pretty diverse place so its not full of only brown people but the book only ever has that.

Hell Encanto captured the diversity of Brazil better and that took place in Colombia.

[up] She really should have done the bare minimum of that. Of course the book gets hijacked by the Greek Gods early in so who knows if she was really that interested in Brazilian mythology.

That is itself a symptom of a larger issue. In that comic book crews have added a lot of diversity in the national sense, but they have stayed segregated to the graphic side of it with illustrators, pencillers and the like. Writers are still overwhelmingly american-european. Sometimes you do get artists who do both (like Rafael Albuquerque) but they're A) few and far in-between in a already exclusive category B) usually primarily illustrators who ocassionally dabble in writing (like the aforementioned Rafael Albuquerque).

As far as Brazilian artists go, Rafael Grampá, Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá are the most notorious who regularly do writing, and they're all employed primarily as illustrators. There is, to my memory, not a single Brazilian equivalent (as in, someone who's chiefly writer) of the likes of Kieron Gillen, Matt Fraction, Grant Morrison. Hell, I'm struggling with any from anywhere in Latin-America.

This is part of the reality of the industry (i.e that it is much easier to break in when you're primarily an illustrator), but as long as Marvel & DC keep trying to appeal to non-american audiences with functionally zero full-time writers outside the anglosphere this is going to keep happening.

Sad thing to note is that the book was actually selling pretty well, more so than the main WW book but the momentum's completely killed it and is prolly why it got canceled.

Joelle Jones may be the creator but she just couldn't execute it.

I just found this article https://www.polygon.com/comics/2021/2/3/22244520/yara-flor-wonder-girl-woman-cw-brazilian which claims that having the 5G Wonder Woman be Brazilian was Didio's idea. So which is the truth? They seem to contradict each other.

BTW, the CBR forums are in full how dare they complain about representation problems, it's not DC's responsibility mode right now.

[up] I'm leaning more towards Yara being Brazilian being Didio's idea, because I did hear something about how he wanted to be punny and have "an Amazon from the Amazon".

and also because I want to treat him the way Fate/ depicted Angra Mainyu for what he did to Wallytongue

AFAIK, Fate/heavens feel and hollow ataraxia had Angry Mango here be depicted as basically a scapegoat. A nameless villager that was punished with the role of bearing all the world's evil. (to oversimplify)

For context to [up]:

The comments section in the article are...mixed.

Some already had a feeling that Yara's series wouldn't last long anyway or thought she wouldn't really appeal to the average American consumer.

Others thought Indigenous Brazil was portrayed well enough and were heartbroken that the series got canned or thought that while Yara was interesting, but gets lost among the other copycats of the OG heroes and the fusion between indigenous Brazilian and Greek mythologies was bad.

Some comments also complained that the disorganization isn't exclusive to the DCEU and that DC is also suffering in the comics and that Twitter is made up of hypocrites who insist on more diversity, but end up not bothering when it actually does come up.

So I went to a convention today and got a pretty good haul of books.

Batman: The Black Mirror, the Batman: Arkham City comic, Batman: Heart of Hush, the O'Neil Green Lantern/Green Arrow series, Final Crisis, and a Batman: Zero Year pack.

Huh turns out in Kelly Sue De Connick's Aquaman she disbanded the monarchy and I've seen some interesting discussions over it.

Funny thing is that prolly won't fix anything about Atlantis. I mean Arthur was king for a long time, he tried everything he can to reform Atlantis and they have literally fought him every step on the way from his councilors to even the common people. He was incredibly unpopular with his power constantly challenged despite being the king.

Hell remember when Corum Rath deposed Arthur? Rath wasn't a noble, he wasn't highborn yet he successfully led an insurrection against Arthur and was elected king with backing by the various institutions and the common people.

There's still the organizations like the Widowhood and the oligarchy that still maintain control over the kingdom. If anything its possibly worse now, because the oligarchy can do whatever they want without having to fight Arthur over it.

And there's nothing stopping another Corum Rath from gaining power through taking advantage of the ingrained xenophobia and shit of Atlantis. Only this time instead of a "king" they'll be a "chancellor".

Oh man De Connick really did do Ocean Master dirty.

After so much time giving him depth and making him sort of an anti-hero who’d prefer to live with a human woman and raise her son together, she instead writes him as a one-note evil tyrant villain who again again tries to take over Atlantis.

That’s fucking sad man, New 52 Orm was one of the best additions to the franchise.

Apparently to make him a Trump-analogue because from what I hear has the whole populist platform thing.

Which ugggh not sure why it had to be Orm instead of anyone else, it’s not like the Atlantis cabinet is exactly lacking in potential demagogues.
