It's less parodying the plot of Total Recall and more doing a thing while referencing it.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Next episode cold open:
Water-T returns. Also this is totally a guess based on nothing but I think (I hope) Magma-Q was voiced by the real Ice-T in this redone flashback

Today's the show's 10th anniversary. With how much influence it's had, I wonder if it qualifies for Seinfeld Is Unfunny.
That might be a bit hasty. Most adult cartoons that followed are either still following the Family Guy formula or are doing their own thing.
try 20 years before you can apply that trope,or thirty
New theme music also a boxI love how Morty found himself forced on an adventure that has absolutely nothing to do with Rick.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."....Right now, the person I'm watching with is calling bullshit on me, but if I'm being honest....this episode made more sense than most Rick and Morty episodes.
Like, it was silly, but not in an insane way (and I say this knowing full well it was an episode about elemental letters and sentient numbers teaming up to fight an S who was really an 8 who became the infinity symbol).
Yeah. Perfectly logical. No Sarcasm Mode pothole. I really mean it.
One Strip! One Strip!I like when secondary characters like Mr. Goldenfold get the spotlight.
Incidentally, this is the first episode ever to not feature Rick at all.
I was kind of hoping there'd be some kind of twist involving 8 being infinity when turned on its side and sure enough it happened.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!> I like when secondary characters like Mr. Goldenfold get the spotlight.
and that dream episode comes back to haunt me!
New theme music also a boxIt was very trope heavy. It's like it went out of the way to include as many tropes as possible. And also copy Star Wars.
Inside The Episode:
- They decided to double-down on the silly Water T "franchise" because "it would be awesome".
- Visual inspiration came from the animated Transformers movie from the 80s.
- A Mr. Goldenfold episode is something they've wanted to do for a long time, if only for Brandon Johnson to let loose.
- The funniest thing to the crew is the juxtaposition of writing serious space opera starring a bunch of goofy-looking anthropomorphized letters and numbers.
This is literally the fourth time I've seen a story about numbers and letters at war. There was The Phantom Tollbooth, Wonder Showzen and the "Number Lore" Internet cartoon.
Is this a trope?
I'm sure we've had episodes with absolutely no Rick or absolutely no Morty before, but I can't recall any at the moment.
No, we haven't.
M. Night Shaym-Aliens! is the closest we have to a Mortyless episode, but even if you don't count the simulated Morty as a Morty appearance the real one appears in the stinger.
Morty is mostly absent from Rickternal Friendshine of the Spotless Mort, Final Desmithation, How Poopy Got His Poop Back, and Air Force Wong, but he still does appear in them briefly. We've never had an episode without him, and this week's episode is the only one without Rick whatsoever.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!Perhaps one of the comics had a Morty-less or Rick-less story, then? Anyone want to verify?
Cold open for the upcoming episode
Huh Rick actually provided a scientific explanation for how there can be multiple heavens.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."That explains the title I guess. They're going to break into Valhalla.
Disgusted, but not surprisedI think that cold open was the most actual science Rick has ever done. He likes to call himself a scientist but usually he’s more an inventor or engineer.

He's usually semi knowledgable about whatever new phenomena is present. I feel like we skip the part of Rick doing research and testing theories because most episodes are about something he already knows about to some extent.
Akira Toriyama (April 5 1955 - March 1, 2024)...........Pope-eball
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique! This was a weirder episode than last week's ep.
Note that I'm the only person in the known universe who thinks last weeks episode made total sense.
One Strip! One Strip!Stick up for individuality, my man!
Anyway, when the Pope said that he got something from a Predator, I felt for sure it would lead to a Pedophile Priest joke. That really surprised me, so you get points!
Then again, you made the easy joke of comparing Pokémon to cockfighting, so you lose points. Guess it evens out.
The next episode is the 10th one, so it's the season finale, right?
1, Rick just... managed to revive Jerry from outright death. In Season 1 he couldn't do anything about death.
2, is it just me or has anybody else barely noticed Rick's voice being different anymore? The new guy is doing a bang-up job. I could sort of hear it in the Poopybutthole episode. Now? Barely hear it.
Akira Toriyama (April 5 1955 - March 1, 2024).
It's not like the Die Hard episode, if it was like the Die Hard Episode it would be a Total Recall episode.
Never trust anyone who uses "degenerate" as an insult.
