Gundam Build Fighters

I still find it hilarious that someone added an entry for Shown Their Work in regards to MMO's for GBD. Apparently "there can be drama in guilds" and "some players are mean" is the bar that has to be cleared.

That's basic shit!

Actually, between the Shown Their Work section and the fantastically long Reality Ensues section, it sort of seems like every instance of "there's anything realistic whatsoever" gets a mention.

I'm going to pull them to discussion if anyone wants to chime in. Some are valid, others... really need to go.

Someone also did mention Values Dissonance, so I dunno if that would apply.

Should we necro this thread now the new season is kicking off?

People've been talking about it over in the general Gundam thread but we can use this one if people want to, yeah.

Probably for the best so as to not crowd up the general thread.

As fun as seeing Captain Zeon be a parody of pretty much everything superhero-related with a dose of Super Robot Hot-Blooded stuff was, I still prefer Kyoya.

God, Kazami is just the absolute worst. I play tanks in MM Os and literally every second he is onscreen I feel the need to shout that he is just the absolute worst tank I have every seen in anything ever.

Parviz gets a pass because he's like five, a youtuber has no excuse for being as bad as he is.

The stupid thing is, Kazami did alright in Episode 3, and that involved a canyon.

But an open field? Sure, charge at the Baund Dog with a beam rifle, that'll work wonders.

Kazami did alright in a canyon, when someone else gave him the simple battle plan of 'Stand perfectly still and slowly let enemies past you one by one.'

Given we know Paz is going to get better, Kaz is by far the weakest member of the team.

I like him. I think he adds some comic relief to the group which is good since everyone else seems too serious thus far. Being seripus isn't a problem but still, I like that he keeps things from getting too heavy even if he can be annoying at times.

His humor doesn't do much for me, sadly. He acts tough but he's just an idiot, which does not endear him.

Just watched all four episodes out so far. Hadn't been avoiding the show or anything, just hadn't had time to watch any of it until today.

It was... better than I expected? The action is solid — not up to the original GBF's standards, but better than most of what we got in Try or GBD. More importantly than that, though, Hiroto is much more interesting than Sekai or Riku. Hell, he's probably more interesting than Sei, for that matter, but Sei's character arc was never really the centerpiece of GBF.

Hiroto leaves me in the novel position of wanting to see more of the characters outside of the Gundam VR MMO. The way he interacts with people differently inside and outside the game is interesting — between his brief flashbacks of not-Sarah and the way his friends talk about how he stopped playing GBN for a while, it feels like he's coming out of a serious episode of depression. Maybe I'm projecting, but the way that he avoid engaging people at more than a surface level and has started sinking a lot of time into GBN but in a completely different way than he used to makes me feel like he's trying really hard to just Be Okay and not quite making it. He's not about to completely collapse, but he's not doing well, either. Hopefully by making some new friends and reconnecting with his old ones he'll slowly get to a better place. But we'll need to see more than just his in-game activities to get a sense of that.

Or maybe I'm reading way too much into a few vague hints and he's just stoic and taciturn by nature. We'll see, I guess.

The rest of the cast are sort of flat on their own, but as a group they balance each other pretty well. Kazami sucks out most of the air in the room with his Glory Seeker schtick, but Par and May both balance him out in different ways — May by being quietly competent, and Par by being as loudly self-effacing as Kazami is overconfident. Par's confidence issues are definitely the least interesting, but it looks like we're dealing with that first, so that works out.

So far the show has me pretty interested, but it remains to be seen if it can follow through with the stuff it's only hinted at so far, or if it's going to taper off into something more generic. I'm cautiously optimistic at the moment.

Honestly, despite my typical disdain for anything Zeon, I absolutely love Captain Zeon for being a mashup of All-Might, Captain America, and Tatsuya. I just hope he stays in the series role of the badass mentor that everyone loves and doesn't become a villain.

I mean, Kyoya wasn't really a villain. Sure, he played along, but then he made it a point to uphold the rules of the little "bet" he made with the Build Divers.

Oh no, I never said Kyoya was a villain. He temporarily opposed the Divers, but what I meant is that I don't want Captain Zeon to become the actual villain of the work.

EDIT: I was actually grouping Kyoya in when I used the phrase "beloved series mentor" along with the likes of Tatsuya and Ral.

Weird side note, the official subtitles refer to Stola as a boy. Official site as a girl.

Dialogue definitely refers to them as a boy too. Perhaps the website made a typo.

The crisis of confidence and restoration of faith by Par was a bit forced, but seeing him interact with Morgiana was cute enough that it mostly worked anyway.

Hiroto's smile at the very end! He is precious and I want to protect him.

My big hope for Valkylander/Morgiana is that it gets more people interested in the Gundlander Series.

Also about Valkylander, or rather its design base; For its Dragon Fusion Mode, I've seen a bunch of comments saying that it looks like a customized version of an SD version of the GNY-001F Gundam Astraea Type F, and I've found some similarities between the two, like the chest circles and similarly-shaped heads. But as for its Gundragon Mode, I think its based on a specific character from the Gundlander Series. I think I found an image with a dragon similar to it from this image set, but I can't go into it to check because the site won't allow me in for using adblocker (Yes, I use adblocker, sue me).

There are people who don't use adblocker?
