I wouldn't be surprised at all if Scootaloo's disability was undiagnosed. Child care seems to be spotty at best in Equestria.
It certainly was for Scootaloo - in "The Last Crusade", it was established that her aunts weren't even living with her while her parents were running around parts unknown, just alternating babysitting duties with whichever local adults were available. To their credit, they decided to move to Ponyville after hearing of all the cool stuff the CMC did for their community.

Either way, not bothering to talk to a doctor about Scootaloo's wings when she's way past the age when the average pegasus would start flying is grossly negligent.

Redemption being somewhat arbitrary depending on the author does track with one of the more acclaimed books on writing out there. John Truby's The Anatomy of Story.

He believes that a story is inherently built on an author's judgement calls regarding what's considered good or bad behaviour. Even in a story where the asshole main character wins in the end, that story idea is still built on the author's understanding that something wrong is happening, and how that relates to the themes the author is trying to communicate.

It's hard to write a story without invoking your moral compass in some way.

Well, I'm guessing I really should say rehabilitation, since Tobias seems to have a strictly religious interpretation of the word.

This makes sense, since flight is magical anyway.
Is flying magical? Yeah pegasus ponies wouldn't realistically be able to fly in real life but that doesn't automatically mean that flying has to be magical in universe.

[up]Yeah, them losing their flight was one of the effects of Tirek draining their magic.

I was just going by the fact that they wouldn't be able to fly under real life physics. I forgot about the whole magic draining thing.

I'll pick up the slack and see if I can manage to get a Sunset/Applejack pic in sometime today, after I'm done baking and getting my Thor costume together for tomorrow's tea party.

[up][up][up] On that note, I've been thinking: It's possible that Bulk Biceps (and his female counterpart from the end of "Buckball Season") can fly because their magic levels are well above that of an average pegasus. Which would mean that limb lengthening surgery potentially could be and effective treatment for Scootaloo. That or prosthetic wings like what we saw on alt-timeline Rainbow Dash in "The Cutie Re-Mark".

And on the subject of reforming villains: It would have been nice if the "Siege of the Crystal Empire" comic story could have been made canon (instead of Sombra bring brought back and eradicated in "the Beginning of the End"). His backstory and reformation were a nice deconstruction of the whole "destiny" thing the series kept talking about.

My real life name is androgynous, and for some reason people always assume I'm a girl, like when they phone me or I have a scheduled appointment at a doctor's office or the hospital. It's why my online name is decidedly male.

I suspect part of that is that these callers subconsciously expect people who pick up during work days to be housewives or stay at home moms.

@Thirikal: Nah, it could be worse. Like, a lot worse. Like, straight up, legitimate torture, worse. I've heard stories of straight therapy that do things like putting a red hot piece of metal against someone while showing them images of men kissing, so they associate homosexuality with pain. Compared to that, a bit of reading and a desperatly badly-trained 'therapist' (I looked up the kind of therapy he's going through... it's biblically-oriented but has come under criticism fro mthe chruch itself for basically ignoring that human beings... well, are human beings, and instead focusing ll it's attention on the bible. This guy has basically started the session with his prognosis, and is only interested in proving himself right) is nothing at all.

Still, moral support is moral support. Besides, might even be good for a black comedy laugh or two.

Oh god, conversion therapy.

I'm so glad my sister discovered she was trans and lesbian after she was already a legal adult. My parents have gotten loads better with age, but I would not have put sending her off to one of these places past them.
