Final Fantasy 6: One thing I wanted to address is that I am apparently playing the game unusually in a way that the devs didn't think of. From my perspective, it's not really my fault. The game encourages you to play this way. Keep in mind that I didn't do anything unusually until Narshe (in fact, that's the first point in the game where you get to choose your party!).

Everything started going off the rails late in Sabin's segment when he learned Rising Phoenix. While Sabin was running around with Cyan and Shadow and later Gau, I noticed that I sometimes messed up the blitzes due to the confusion of using multiple characters. When he learned Rising Phoenix, I noticed that it was strong enough to one shot all the enemies at once most of the time. Sabin was suddenly so strong that he could win battles by himself faster than working together with Cyan or Gau (again, he was only level 15 at the time, the same level as Cyan).

So when it came to the battle of Narshe and I was told to divide the characters into three parties, it was only natural to put Sabin in a party by himself, because he was by far the strongest, and I wanted to divide up into roughly equal parties. Plus being by himself made me less likely to mess up the blitzes. And then I decided to see how many of the imprerial guards he could take out with Rising Phoenix, and as it turned out, by running around, it was possible to intercept every single guard and Sabin was strong enough to solo the entire imperial army (again, without any specific training at that point).

Of course then he died to Kefka, which taught me that Sabin needed Celes's help to take out bosses. So I brought both Sabin and Celes to the western contient. Partly because they were so strong that I didn't need anyone else and partly because I wasn't sure if the people left behind in Narshe would need to fight at some point, and since they were a lot weaker, I thought I should leave as many behind as I could to balance the strengths. And the rest is history.

So really, it's Square's fault for A) making Sabin so much stronger than the other early characters and B)

B) Choosing a broken and unbalanced XP system. Keep in mind that I didn't even know that XP was divided between party members. I thought I was giving up extra XP using a reduced party, and I just accidently stumbled into a really overpowered strategy.

With that out of the way, on to Ebot's Rock.

and I guess I forgot C) Giving Sabin a combat mechanic that doesn't play well with others.

I seem to have accidently gotten back to the entrance to Ebot's Rock. So now I have to randomly step on panels till I find my way back to the hungry chest.

I hate this place so much.

The real problem is that there's no way to know where you're going. You just have to wander around until you get lucky.

Finally!

And of course the chest declares that I don't have enough now. I guess you lose all your coral when you leave teh cave?

Or maybe it cleaned me out the first time around?

Oh come on! I still don't have enough? That was at least a dozen.

20 wasn't enough. Time time I savestated back so I can keep the 20 and go look for more. This is getting annoying.

This time I had 30. Apparently that was enough.

Time to fight Hidon and Erebus x 4.

Learned Grand Delta! What is that? It's not an Esper move.

Oh right, must have been Strago's lore thing.

Strago: "I did it! I really beat Hidon!" <— Actually Strago's net impact on the fight was negative because his Aqua breathe healed the Erebuses. But I guess I shouldn't break his bubble too soon.

Gungo doesn't beleive that Strago beat Hidon. For good reason.

Bam! Thack! Pow! Right in the kisser! <— That's a Honeymooner's reference, right? I only know that because I saw an episode of Family Guy where Peter kept saying that.

Actually, I think I may be mixed up there. Nevermind.

As Strago wanders around town, his vision goes all pixellated. He must have stayed up too late drinking.

Oh well, got that over with at least.

I think I'll now try hunting down Boss Dino again.

For some reason, whenever I think of Boss Dino, I immainge the pokemon Meganium. They don't even look that similar, since the Brachiosaurus is a different color and doesn't have the flower frill.

Unfortunately, Relm didn't manage to learn Reraise during that little outing. She's only at 47%. Oh well.

Just for fun, I'm going to try with solo Sabin. I'm curious to see if he can beat it by himself.

For reference, Sabin is currently level 77 with 7708 hp and 109 Magic. I switched from the +2magic esper to +30% hp after level 76.

Well level 78 after a 2xTrex fight. He's going to be gaining a lot of levels again even without a growth egg due to all the trex xp.

Ok, I give up again. I think that was 17 fights with no sign of a Brachiosaurus. This is just ridiculous. Why even have a boss that only appears randomly under very specific circumstances?

I used to joke about Boss Dino being too scared to fight me, but I'm pretty sure that that's now actually the case. I have noticed a few cases where it seems like you get harder enemies once you've increased in level. The first time I came to Dino Forest, Trexes only appeared individually. But when I came back, they started appearing in pairs, and now they appear in pairs more often than not. Meanwhile, I haven't seen a single Brachiosaurus since my first excursion, even though they were pretty common back then.

I guess the irony is that the devs set the Brachiosaurus to only appear when you're too low level to fight it. Talk about a screw you.

Incidently, Sabin went from 77 to 82 just then. Without a growth egg.

Oh well, back to Ancient Castle. Apparently what I missed before is that you have to stand in the right throne and then go five steps down and press A and then go to the library. I don't know why I didn't think of it because it was completely obvious.

A Lunatys keeps freezing Umaro. Not sure how, since I thought he absorbed cold attacks. Oh well.

Not like the Lunatys has any way to hurt Umaro. It's just a waiting game.

Umaro ran into a random "Armored Weapon". It dropped him down to 33 hp with that weird missile attack.

Oh, there's a dragon! I don't fancy Umaro's chances with only 33hp though.

Sure enough, Umaro was downed on the first round. Time to heal up and try again.

It is the Blue Dragon.

Umaro beat it pretty easily now that he can survive more than 1 attack. He didn't even go below 5k hp.

2 dragons remaining...

The queen... didn't make it.

Odin becomes Raidan, aka Substitute Snake. Was he the one armed guy who shoots electricity?

Well that was kind of cool, though it still doesn't explain that one unreachable chest.

Wait, I just realized that that chest is actually the Master Tronberry chest from earlier. You reach it from the front of the castle.

It's weird having differnet parts of the same room reached from differnet areas like that.

Err by Master Tronberry, I actually mean Samurai Soul.

Umaro goes for revenge on the Samurai Soul and easily beats it this time. For some reason, it didn't bother with the instant death attack this time. But then again, Umaro is a lot tougher this time around too.

Well I guess that's it for now. I think the only thing left is Kefka. Luckily he can't just run away like Deathgaze, Boss Dino, and Giant Cactuar can.

So, did Ma and Pa Pie speak in Ye Olde Butchered English or Flowery Elizabethan English? I feel like it fits more with the latter, but I'm not sure. Grammy Smith's attempt was definitely the former though.

Studies have shown that the best person to have children with is your thrid or fourth cousin. So no the Pies and Apples are not too closely related. Also, "incest" is a legal term, so it's defined entirely by the laws of the country (and yes, they are different in different countries. I have a relative who married his first cousin which is legal here and it's legal in some states of the US as well)

Also, colorful cartoon ponies. In a world full of magic. I doubt their genetics work the same.

There's pros and cons to genetic mixing. Which one wins out all depends on the particular case.

On the one hand, if you breed with yourself too much, you end up with harmful recessive alleles as well as getting stuck in a rut population wise. On the other hand, breeding with a complete outsider is liable to break up helpful gene complexes that rely on all the parts being present to work.

They way it's described in Pinkie Apple Pie, they sounded distant enough that it wouldn't even matter if they're related.

If they went along with the Marble-Mac idea, I wouldn't be surprised if they find out they're not related, only for Marble and Big Mac to get married.

Edit: Someone made a nifty family tree for them actually. It basically says that if Pinkie and AJ were related, it was via marriage and not by blood. So not incest.

Probably. There's strong evidence to support that humanity hit a bottleneck of 15000 people around 70000 BC after a super volcano erupted and caused global winters for a few years. Regardless, there's a few points where prehistoric humans periodically dropped below 40000 before complex tools started to even out chances of survival.

It's been a while, but I return to continue my quest of catching up on this episode backlog. Previously on My Little Pony: The Rarity Trio had just been completed. Will the next one extend it to the Rarity Quartet?

Let's see, the title of the next episode is... "Brotherhooves Social". I seem to recall AJ and Rarity mentioning having to miss the Sisterhooves Social, so I'm guessing not. Looks like Mini-Rarity will have to fill in.

I've been guilty of this. Putting things in boxes, then not doing anything to help me know what box is what. It's painful.

I would ask where AB got that bowling pin, but knowing the shenanigans she gets up to, I'm sure it's just one other random thing from her crusading.

"Aw, would you look at that... Wait, stop, reminiscing is forbidden. I'm on a mission."

AB and AJ have their own cheer. What dorks. tongue

"AJ, you're my favorite sister." "I'm your only sister." "Still true."

As a dude with two younger sisters, AB sort of ignoring Mac is accurate. Though my sisters are also just as likely to be at each other's throats while still staying relatively neutral towards me. It's a trade-off.

"Yer bein' summoned, Applejack!" Applejack: 32 MP, deals mid-high non-elemental damage to all enemies, and feeds apples to the party to heal that same amount.

AB gets funky when AJ's away.

"The Sisterhooves Social's always had a loose definition of 'sister'."

...Is this going where I think it's going?

"As long as it constitutes a bond that represents the spirit of the social, you're in!"

It is. This is going to be glorious.

Then Big Mac got an idea. An awful idea. Big Mac a wonderful, awful idea.

As soon as "Orchard Blossom" said "I do declayah", I just started grinning and grinning. [lol]

Final Fantasy 6: It occured to me that I never did find out the Shadow's backstory. I guess that only happens if he survives the calamity.

The samurai gave me something called Master's Scroll which apparently allows attacking 4 times in a turn. I gave it to Umaro to see what will happen.

It really does work. He does a lot less damage though, so I think it may be a bad bargian.

Looks like it's somewhere around half damage. But he seems to also crit a lot less often now. He used to crit most of the time.

I'm having trouble telling how it works exactly. It may be that Umaro has multiple kinds of attacks. When he does the punch thing instead of a weapon slash, he only attacks once but it still does half damage. Weird.

Time to try out the Lich Ring again.

Intersting. When you equip the Lich Ring and Angel Ring at the same time, you take damage over time.

Time to check out Raiden. Quick seems like a useful spell, but it's another 1%er and I can't be bothered to learn it. Teaching people Reraise was grueling enough and it's not like I actually need it.

Ok time to finally beat up Kefka.

"Please form 3 paries."

For my 3 parties, I choose Sabin, Umaro, and Celes.

To make things more interesting, I decided to give Sabin the Cursed Shield as well as the Lich Ring and Angel Ring. I'm curious to see how long he can hold out like that.

Sabin tries to go down the up escalator. This is not possible, apparently.

Sabin doesn't even make it through the first battle. Apparently the cursed shield makes him both enraged and confused, so he's forced to just attack himself until he dies.

As well as some other stuff like Doom for good measure. But that's irrelevant if he can't even attack any enemies.

Ok, I swapped out the Lich Ring for Ribbon. Wonder if that will help against the shield.

He's still Doomed, but all the other stuff is gone, so he can fight and win easily. Let's see if Sabin can solo the rest of the tower while holding the shield.

Obtained Fixed Dice! Good thing too, because Setzer's last set of dice were broken.

Reached a dead end. I guess the other parties need to advance to flip a switch or something. I'll backtrack just to be sure I didn't miss anything though.

I thought a Brachiosaurus had randomly appeared, but luckily it's just a weak pallette swap.

I did miss one chest. It is a Hypno Crown, whatever that is.

I choose you, Umaro!

Along with passing the baton, Sabin unequips his relics in case Umaro needs them.

It takes a lot longer for Umaro to kill stuff, but luckily the Angel Ring keeps him up. He just hit level 70.

A pair of Primeval Dragons did a ton of damage to Umaro. This'll be tough. I hate to immagine what it will be like for Celes, who is only level 62 and not naturally gifted at combat.

Obtained Minerva Bustier.

Umaro died to his second Primeval Dragon fight. Not really sure what to do here.

Time to try Celes.

Oh wow, they really don't mess around. Celes's first fight is a Great Behemoth, Great Malboro, and a Vector Lythos. Sabin of course could take thme out in 2 hits, but the mere mortals are going to have trouble.

Blizzardgaga heals the Malboro? I thought grass types were supposed to be weak against ice. Pokemon lied to me!

Well she won the fight and gained a level, but she expended over half her HP and MP in the process.

How do the hooks even work? I see one flying past, but I can't figure out how to grab it.

Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle are not amused. And detective skills run in Rarity's family.

Big Mac is sort of patting himself on the back here.

AB's incredulous face when Sweetie just rolls with it is just great.

RD: "Waaaaaait a minute, you look suspicious." Mac: "Just how are you related to Scootaloo, again?" RD: "...You win. Carry on."

You can tell that Big Mac's voice actor is having so much fun with this. Then again, at this point he's probably said more lines as "Orchard Blossom" than Big Mac's gotten in the entire show.

I imagine Orchard Blossom is an alto. A very deep alto.

That falsetto physically hurts. Like, it makes my vocal chords wince at holding that note while sounding anything good.

I can't stop laughing at Big Mac's Southern Belle persona and all its southernisms. [lol]

"I'll help you win a ribbon, or my name's Orchard Blossom. And it's not."

Why Orchard Blossom, a proper lady shouldn't lay on the ground in a dress like that. Your bloomers were in full view.

Big Mac can't jump, so he chooses the short route.

Today's forecast: hay.

Another great Apple Bloom face. This one is, "I'm about to be crushed by my monster of a cousin, aren't I?"

He was about to spike her like a football. [lol]

Man, Big Mac's disguise never fooled anyone. I suppose they're not about to question a guy's life choices if he decides to dress in drag.

Don't worry, chicken. You have coop insurance.

Actually, Big Mac's disguise being completely transparent puts that guy who was smitten by "Orchard" in a new light.

AB, you're not going to get any answers out of Big Mac unless he's wearing a wig.

Aw, Big Mac's feeling inadequate, being the big brother of a national hero. That's actually kind of touching.

Episode finished. That was hilarious. And also sweet. Like I said, I have two younger sisters myself, so I always like it when a story focuses on that sort of relationship (all too often when I see a male character have a younger sister, it's the type of story where the younger sister is little more than a motivation for the dude to be a protagonist).

I probably wouldn't go so far as to dress in drag for them, though.

@Story: OOC: Oh, since you have the master scroll and the fixed dice, may I suggest a fun strategy? Give Setzer the fixed dice and the master scroll. The fun thing about the fix dice; it ignores enemy defense and the master scroll's half damage penalty. Now, granted, the fixed dice damage is a total crap shoot but it should average out to 11000 points of damage per turn given his level.

...but if you want to make Sabin too stronk, get yourself the merit award. You can then equip the fix dice to Sabin. Given his level of 82, you will be averaging 23000 points of damage per turn.

No, I'm using THREE parties of Sabin, Celes, Umaro, and noone else.

It works the same as it does in Phoenix Cave. Just wait for it to pass by and interact with it. You will return to the airship.

The one at Phoenix Cave doesn't move. You just walk up to it. The one here seems to run away from me. I tried waiting but it never came by. Maybe I was waiting in the wrong place?

Oh, since you have the master scroll and the fixed dice, may I suggest a fun strategy? Give Setzer the fixed dice and the master scroll. Now, granted, the fixed dice damage is a total crap shoot but it should average out to 11000 points of damage per turn given his level.

I've got to try that. Sounds like Setzer isn't a complete waste of space like I thought. I might even try swapping out Umaro or Celes if it really works. He might have trouble surviving at first as a mere level 40 though.

...but if you want to make Sabin too stronk, get yourself the merit award. You can then equip the fix dice to Sabin. Given his level of 82, you will be averaging 23000 points of damage per turn.

Sabin is already too stronk. He can stroll around the tower at his leisure even with the cursed shield.

Plus he can't hold both the Merit Award and the Master's Scroll since he needs the Ribbon to counteract the shield. And without the scroll, I'm assuming that he can only kill one enemy a turn.

Besides, I don't know how to get the Merit Award. I assume it's another collosseum reward, but I have no idea what to gamble.

No, I'm using THREE parties of Sabin, Celes, Umaro, and noone else.

While it's possible to beat the tower with single person parties—and with Celes, Edgar and Setzer, no less, it's inadvisable unless you really know what you're doing. Even an over-leveled character can run into issues with crowd control status effects, unevadable attacks, like the Great Behemoth's Meteor, or nasty counterattacks (from the same mob, as well as some of the bosses).
