Netflix has tweeted that the Ultraman: Rising movie will be out June 14. I published the sandbox draft.

Their choice for Ultraman Arc's transformation device is.....interesting.

Also, yet another Ultra with a sword weapon. I'm interested with the Sun Armor and Moon Armor. I wonder if we'll see other armors. The final form might be Armor-based too.

Was thinking of actually dipping into the Ultra Series.

Considered getting into Tiga, but mostly to see Camerra/Camilla.

Then I found out about Trigger, which I guess is some kind of Alternate retelling of Tiga. And then I wanted to check that out....because of Carmearra/Carmilla.

Now....I just want an special where they fight each other.

Rob is nothing if not a slave to his passions. Plus, you don't get enough female characters fighting in Toku (though that's been improving) you don't get nearly enough Female Characters fighting each other in Toku, so damned if you'd ever see two dark action girls fighting each other.

.....I lost my train of thought. Simple matter is, if I ever do jump into the Ultra series, where would be a good place to start?

Honestly, Tiga wouldn't be a terrible starting point. It was the first series after Ultraman had been off TV for fifteen years, so it was already meant to serve as sort of a reintroduction to the franchise, establishing a new baseline for it without requiring any real past knowledge.

Do know, though, that your waifu only appears in a movie released after the end of the series, so don't go in expecting to see a whole lot of her.

Literally the only Ultra series I recommend not to start with is Geed. It's sort of the endcap to a multi-series arc.

I got in with Ultraman Z which is a lot of fun. Can't recommend Z enough. And the new Ultraman Blazar is also considered peak, despite/because of the Ultraman in that being very non-standard in behavior.

Both those and Trigger are all available officially on You Tube last I checked. Z and Blazar also have (Good!) English dubs. Can't go wrong.

I did actually.

.....Dammit. I swore I'd never do the Waifu thing, but here I am, proving my soul is weak. Remember folks. You can always fail yourself when it comes to giant women.

Also, lets be fair. She's only one of my Waifus. I did mentioned two of them.[lol]

Anyway, perhaps Tiga is where I'll come him. Maybe I'll give Blazar a look as well, since it's the most recent series (Arc hasn't started yet). Now it's a question of when I'll find the time to do this, since I got so much going on. fortunately, the Perfectly Legal Means I use to watch Kamen Rider at current has Ultraman shows as well. Plus if it's on Youtube, I'm more than willing to check that out.

Ehh. Geed was the first series I watched to completion (I started but never finished X before that.) and I was never confused nor did I feel like I was missing out on anything. If someone wants to start with Geed I wouldn't discourage them from that.

I started with Ginga, the explicit anniversary series, and it worked pretty well for me. I would not recommend anyone else start with Ginga, but still. A lot of Ultraman just comes with the context of "there's a ton more of these guys".

[up] Who knows? Maybe it wasn't as popular with international viewers as the past 3 series or they didn't feel like it had any "hook" for newcomers

So random question:

What's the connection between Tiga and the previous Ultras?

I understand Tiga is kinda the Kuuga of Ultra (being separate from his predecessors and starting a new generation of Ultra series from a meta standpoint) but is there anything connecting him to the ones who came before?

Also, what's the relationship between Tiga and Trigger? Is the latter purely a meta remake of the former? I know they apparently meet in series at one point, but what's the deal with the similarity between their worlds (and their ex-girlfriends having the same damned name, only one has an extra R.

Huh. Since Trigger is pronounced Triga in Japan, I guess it's the same for him and Tiga.

[up] Tiga is entirely standalone from other Ultra, there are alternate selves of him but they too don't have any direct relationship to past Ultras. The closest he has to a connection is Dyna who came long after he did

As for Tiga and Trigger, they too don't have any explicit relation but Trigger is very likely a direct Alternate Self to Tiga. Nothing is 100% clear but it would make sense

I see. I figured as much.

Well, all that's left is to jump in.

I'll probably start with Tiga, maybe check out Dyna since it's a sequel, then jump to Trigger and Decker.

Might check out Blazar as well since it's another Stand Alone.

But that's a lot of work. How long are these series? It's gonna be difficult for me to find the time to watch them all.

[up] Since Ultraman X series are 24-25 episodes long. Beforehand they ranged from 40 to 50 and in Ultraman Cosmos' case, 65 with three movies. Ginga and Ginga S are each 10-12 episodes long and have a movie and a side special miniseries like all New Gen Shows.

Huh. So they're all over the place huh?

Like, I'm pretty sure that Both Kamen Rider and Super Sentai always average at about 50 episodes (with the exception of Kamen Rider Decade, which was cut down to about 40 eps).

I might be wrong on that in regards to the other shows, however. I've never exactly watched every single Rider Series (and there's still a lot of Sentai Series I haven't tried yet).

[up] Yeah, Rider and Sentai series have been pretty consistently 50 episodes with some exceptions (Showa Riders had episode counts all over the place and Sentai had 1 series with only 30+ epsodes, JAKQ)

Ultraman has had consistent counts since 2015

The Ultra series stay relatively consistent in episode length within a certain era. While Ultra Q only had 28 and original Ultraman 39, Ultraseven to Ultraman80 all have about 50 episodes, as do Tiga, Dyna and Gaia, although those start to have multiple movies as well. It got less consistent after that, especially anomalous entries such as the international co-productions, but most were still in that vague region.

Ginga starts the New Generation, presumably getting fewer episodes due to a lower budget and being somewhat experimental; if you add Ginga and Ginga S together you get a more standard figure. Most New Generation shows have around 25 episodes and a movie.

Kamen Rider and Super Sentai actually had some early installment weirdness on that front too; original Kamen Rider had 98 episodes, while X had 35 and Amazon 24, although the others settled into approximately 50. On the Sentai side, Gorenger had 84 but J.A.K.Q only 35. I suppose no long-running franchise starts knowing it's going to be a long-running franchise.

Episode 2.

So it's interesting in that while there is an Arc (learning more about Tiga and the ancient society he protected), there doesn't seem to be an immediate Big Bad so far.

Normally we'd have gotten a good look at the dudes causing all the troubles right from the start, but right now, it's just random monsters.

Not all Ultraman series do have a Big Bad. They range from nonexistent to the one behind every Monster of the Week to somewhere in between.

Of course sometimes they psyche you out by following the OG's entirely unrelated monster plots before introducing someone working from the shadows...

Huh. So I guess that's something that sets Ultraman apart from Sentai, Kamen Rider, and even Metal heroes.

Sometimes, it's just monsters wrecking shit because they can.

Yeah, a lot of times they're equivalent to wild animals or unaffiliated invaders. In the former case, the plot might occasionally even involve peacefully relocating them, or finding whatever it is that's making them hostile and taking care of that, something Ultraman Cosmos is primarily centered around.
