I don't think many details about tarot will be plot relevant; the powers the girls get have little to do with the actual symbolism. While the writers have clearly done their research, I suspect they did so after coming up with the scenario

Double-post, but eh. The website has a section on the monsters, which are apparently called 'daemonia'. Low res, but clearer images than in the anime itself

Not sure what's with the butterfly motif

Huh. Considering how victims are apparently Ret-Gone, maybe they'll play with the Butterfly of Death and Rebirth or Schrödinger's Butterfly.

I think they're a little too heavy on the motifs, especially Luna.

And yes, a very Madoka-like tone to it, and it doesn't get any less so after the second episode. No idea about CCS, though, since I never watched it.

I don't find the characters very interesting, though. The plot (post #6 was certainly right about the My God, What Have I Done?) should have a good impact, but I just find it lacking.

As someone who read part of CCS...yeah, no similarity whatsoever. I suppose whoever added that line just thought "cards, it must be similar". Hahahano.

As of Episode 2, it oddly reminds me of a Madoka fanfic I read once. I am wondering what the next episodes will be about, though.

The monsters that grant wishes and make contracts. It's like Madoka in reverse

They're not too heavy on the motifs...I mean, they're supposed to have something to do with their cards, so they have to show how they are. That's the point. Well, except for the tarot-theme naming. That really is going too far. Whatever.

I think it's good. Dark, but it seems like (so far, seems like) everyone of the major characters is trying to do the right thing. The whole My God, What Have I Done? was appropriately angsty without holding back the plot.

So Akari is the real Grass-tan, not Luna. I appreciate the main character having an awesome green thumb. Shouldn't she be bad with shade-loving plants though? tongue I also like Temperance-chan and the triplets. And Akari's aunt and uncle.

Stupid needless cliffhanger.

Did anyone catch what Fuyuna's arcana was?

Fuyuna's Daemonia was III, which would be The Empress

...Assuming that the Daemonia match the major arcana, and that the Daemonia match their victims

The fire monster would then be the High Priestess, and the bug monster...well that looks like a VIII on the website, and the website uses the system where Strength is the eighth card.

EDIT: Wait, no, the fire monster's card is IV, the Emperor. If you look closely on the website you can see a figure in each Diablos Tarot that has the same hairstyle as the corresponding normal Tarot picture used elsewhere in the series and on the website. I guess it does match.

Episode 2:

  • I'm glad Akari didn't angst too much. It's interesting to see that their job of erasing Daemonia and thus people does affect them negatively. It was just a solemn "It never gets easier" this episode, and I hope it stays that way. Unless they can do a dramatic breakdown well.
  • So the school doesn't even teach tactics, or anything? Wow. It works, I guess.
  • I can only guess how lazy the characters' parents were in the naming process. "Uhh... since she'll get The Moon, let's call her Luna!"
  • Huh, Akari's memories were altered. I thought the memory loss was just what happened when a Daemonia gets erased.
  • I think I'll just gush about the fight scene. Rapidfire ice arrow cannon thingy made my day. The other spells were visual treats too (Temperance is really funky), though I dunno what The Moon has to do with plants.
  • I wonder if The Sun will ever be used for healing. Seems to speed up growth, at any rate.

[up]

Seems that normal people have their memories of the deceased wiped automatically, but perhaps they had to manually alter Akari's memory because as a tarot wielder she's probably unaffected by the auto-wipe.

This all feels kinda World Embryo-ish.

Still dark. Still interesting. The angst was appropriate, and it's good to see the others don't like this either. I groaned at the moon girl being named Luna. Fight scenes remain cool. This really does feel like reverse Madoka. Characters aren't anything special, but they're not horrible. How long is this show going to be?

Hylarn (Don’t ask)
#38: Jul 14th 2013 at 8:39:22 PM

No episode count has been released, as far as I know. I'd expect it to be single-cour, though

...Also, Luna isn't any worse than the others when it comes to her name. Possibly a bit better, since her given name has the decency to be in a different language

Sterok Since: Apr, 2012
#39: Jul 14th 2013 at 9:11:03 PM

Do I want to know what the other names mean? It's probably single-cour, and if it is I suspect this will move at a very fast pace the entire time.

Hylarn (Don’t ask)
#40: Jul 14th 2013 at 9:24:22 PM

...The names aren't subtle if you know Japanese. I'll leave it at that

For pacing, it'll probably be slowing down a bit fairly soon. We're finishing up with the set-up, so we should have a few episodes of character development before the plot starts in earnest

Not in particular. What seems to have happened is Madoka resulted in a legitimization of Mahou Shoujo in general, and some of the resulting shows were dark

Akari's surname is Taiyo as in Sun. (And her first name is apparently a word for light.) Tsukuyomi Luna is Full Moon Moon. And I just plain don't remember anyone else's name. At least the given names can be excused, but the family names...

So what is "Fuyuna?"

P.s. Akari and Luna are going to get a ton of Ho Yay as Sun and Moon.

And Akari was supposed to be the last, so where are "Judgement" and "The World?" (The World has got to be someone exceptional.)

My understanding is that the tarot powers run in the family, so the family names make sense. Giving the kids repetive names raises questions, though

The other two leads are Hoshikawa Seira (Star River Star ra) and Shirokane Ginka (White Gold Gold*

ka)

"Going to"?

Ariel is Judgement, Etia is The World. Akari was the last to be found, not the last in the traditional numbering

Hoshikawa Seira - No idea about her given name, but Hoshikawa means "star river".

Shirogane Ginka - Ginka means "silver coin", while Shirogane means "white gold".

The names of the other two have already been explained, so I won't repeat them here.

The most blatant one is Akari's "Taiyou" though. =.=

Oh yeah, speaking of which, Akari's mom's name "Hinata" means "sunny place" or "in the sun".

Seira's first kanji is the one for star. Noooooooooooo subtlety at all. More like browbeating us with it.

I see a lot of comparing to Madoka but no one mentions that the art style and atmosphere seems more like a Sting game like Yggdra union? Even the openings are kinda smiliar.

Hylarn (Don’t ask)

Art style... reminds me more of Disgaea, but I can kind of see it. Atmosphere, no. It really does feel like Madoka to me, and not at all like either of the Sting games I'm familiar with (Riviera and Yggdra Union)

I'm going to be very annoyed if we don't get fanart of Akari and Luna doing the miko embrace by the time the show is over

Other, less shippy reactions: Akari's ability to hear daemonia is interesting. Not sure where they're going with it, but I'm glad that it's not a messianic "she can save the daemonia!" thing. Also, I'm expecting something bad to happen involving Seira

On an All There in the Manual note, the episode's Diablos Tarot was the Hanged Man.
