The merge wasn't really a merge, was it? It was a cut and redirect. Because the original page was such a mess and because just didn't want a page that was Cancelled And Liked By This Troper.

That's part of why it was merged.

I figured that removing all the wicks was a pretty good idea.

Wow. That page is a mess.

Another problem is that instead of referencing an objective cancellation trope, the troper says that the work was Too Good to Last and why it shouldn't have been canceled blah blah blah that it went into complaining. Sometimes it gets shoehorned into examples where it doesn't belong (In the tragically short lived Alice and Bob, an example of this happens when blah blah blah). I should know, I removed links to the trope.

If we do decide to restore the page, there should be really high standards for what qualifies, like So Bad, It's Horrible.

[up]Worth noting that SBIH basically gets the silent treatment from the rest of the wiki. In fact, the only reason it wasn't out-and-out cut was because it had too much content and was, at the time, too popular, which isn't the case here.

[up][up] I also noticed that the trope gave way to Zero Context Examples.

[up]Which was why it was merged into Screwed by the Network in the first place.

[up] Which was clearly a flawed solution, since it just resulted in Screwed by the Network (an objective trivia item) suddenly being wicked for a Audience Reaction item.

I say we turn it Too Good to Last into an exampleless definition page. People are going to keep using it no matter what, so we may as well not hurt a separate trope just because we're dissatisfied with Too Good to Last.

If so, it will still be linked around the wiki, which keeps the nonconstructive references around the wiki.

Which is happening anyway.

Red Link it?

I wonder if restoring that under a better name and with better example quality would work (And then redirect the current page to it).

I think it's a better solution than funneling it into an existing, very different page.

At least have a note saying that, theoretically, any short work can be considered Too Good to Last and that the editor should consider whether it really counts as an example. This is what we have for Critical Research Failure.

[up]Or hell, any long work that didn't go as long as a particular troper would like.

That too. In fact, I still support the redlinked disambig idea. I did suggest redirecting to Short-Runners once.

Can we have a single proposition crowner on this?

SeptimusHeap from Switzerland (Edited uphill both ways) Relationship Status: Mu

No, because there is more than one proposition here.

Also, if redirecting this to another trope leads to the misuse of that trope, the solution is not to redirect.

Forgot the meaning of single proposition. I need more sleep.

That was an option I proposed back when there were many references to this trope. Now that all the wicks were removed, I don't see that option being relevant now.

Personally I'd like to have Too Good to Last restored as an Audience Reaction / YMMV trope, possibly with a new title but not necessarily. I also think we might keep examples on the page, provided it's checked from time to time for shoehorning and Zero Context Example wicks.

Perhaps it should be restored on SugarWiki, though that wouldn't really be a good solution for the wick problem.

Isn't Too Good to Last basically Gushing About Shows You Like? To me it makes perfect sense to redirect that to something that's actually a trope (or trivia item).

What all should be included? We've got quite a few suggestions...

Five options I can think of:

  • Cut
  • Make into a redlinked disambig
  • Restore
  • Redirect to a different page (TBD)
  • Keep the redirect and do nothing

What restoring would cause can be discussed if restoring is the most popular option, such as wick bans, placing on Sugar Wiki, filtering examples etc.

I feel like that should be hashed out beforehand, as some people may be in favor of, say, a wick ban and utterly against Sugar Wiki etc.
