Question. Do the 80s/90s cartoons use original quality, or do they use those remasters they made a couple years back with cropped widescreen and remade credits?

Saw the extras for The Lion King on Disney+, and they're still only showing the edited version of the alternate Can You Feel The Love Tonight, sung by Timon and Pumbaa. Does the full version not exist, or does Elton John have it in his contract that the full version can't be released or what?

The biggest thing I personally don't get about The Lion King is why they still use the reanimated alligators in "I Just Can't Wait To Be King" even now. Were the animators just not happy with the original version of the scene they appear in?

[up] Apparently, yes. That's exactly what happened.

But Allers was unsatisfied by the design of one particular set of animals in the original sequence: the crocodiles. "I think, in the rush of trying to get the film done, the scene kind of fell through the cracks. They wound up just using a story panel," he explained. "It might have been my drawing; it might have been someone else’s drawing. Whoever's drawing it was, it had never really gone through a proper design path. But they wound up just doing the designs from the story panel." Hence, animators reworked certain elements of the original film for the IMAX release. "When we went back in and re-cleaned up some of the smaller work," he said, "I used that opportunity to have those crocodiles redesigned."

I'd buy that story if the crocodiles (as well as the birds in their mouths) didn't look worse in the redesign.

What did the crocodiles originally look like?

So, oddly lacking color compared to everything else or just looking goofy.

Also, note that later instalments in the franchise use completely different crocodile designs. The Lion King II: Simba's Pride has hyper-realistic, non-anthropomorphic crocodiles, whereas The Lion Guard has slightly more cartoony crocodiles with expressive faces, but not as stylised as the ones in the original film.

[up] Probably for the best, tbh. The original design especially doesn't fit in with the rest of the character designs at all.

I’m glad the modern design exists because the old gators are terrifying.

Well, the crocodiles appear during a fantasy sequence, so they might not look exactly like that within the film's logic.

Huh. Is this the first first year since the series started that there hasn’t been a new one for Mickey’s birthday?

Where is the Aladdin show. I want to watch the Aladdin show.

Also no Buzz Lightyear show. Lassiter apparently hated it but screw him.

The lack of the Aladdin show is a glaring oversight, given that it's one of Disney's better and more long lasting series.

Until Tangled The Series took its spot decades later, I'd go as far as to say it was the best series Disney ever made based on one of their films.

At first I figured they just weren't doing the movie based shows on Disney+, except the current one (Tangled), but then I noticed that The Emperor's New School is on there. And, less wtf-y, also the Lilo and Stitch series (which was also really good).

The weird thing about missing the Aladdin show is that they still have the sequels for it. King of Thieves is basically the finale for the TV series, too.

And there's some other glaring omissions, like the original The Muppets Show and a couple newer animated shows like Jake Long and The Weekenders.

None of the Muppets shows beyond the ABC one are available, which I assume is due to licensing reasons.

I can vouch that being the case for Muppet Babies because of the stock footage in particular. Sony making Muppets From Space and The Muppets Take Manhattan is why they aren’t on Disney+ either.

Also late to the Lion King talk, how did “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” get changed?

Honestly I thought my only interest in this were the Marvel films, Gargoyles, and maybe The Mandalorian. But now I can add Aladdin to that list.

I've heard other people say that King of Thieves is best seen as a finale to the TV show, but honestly, I don't agree. The movie makes almost no reference to the series, and arguably some aspects of it implicitly ignore the series. Like how Genie at the start assumes that nothing can go wrong because Jafar's dead, even though they've encountered cataclysmic threats every other week since Jafar's death. Or that Razoul's character development from the series is ignored and he's gone back to hating Aladdin. Stuff like that. One definitely gets the impression that the movie was written on the assumption that its viewers wouldn't have seen the series. Which, you know, is fair.

The only references to be found are some background cameos at the wedding scene at the end. But that's clearly calibrated so as to not be distracting to a viewer who hasn't watched the TV show.
