[up] Not that, the Peter Pan & the Pirates cartoon.

EDIT: "Unlike most of Saban's other shows, which were bought by Disney (although Saban got back Power Rangers and a few other shows back), this show was sold to TMS Entertainment as Disney did not want two Peter Pans. TMS has yet to give the DVD and etc. rights to other companies."

Oh. Aw.

Really? I kind of thought that Disney had hidden it away in its deepest vault to have no rival to their Peter Pan. That they rather sold it is therefore the "better" scenario.

Maybe with all the streaming services needed content, one of them will get the idea to buy up as many old cartoons as possible...

Back in 2010 I remember the trope page had a rumor a DVD release was forthcoming in 2020.

I'd gladly take that over nothing at all XD

No, Disney still owns the rights. TMS doesn't own it at all. (If it was, you'd have seen it by now, and besides - they didn't even animate all the episodes.)

They've owned it since 2001, when they bought Fox Family and all of Fox's children's series came with it, but unless someone approaches them to license the show... unfortunately, you're out of luck.

That got me thinking: who owns The Tick (the cartoon), Eek! The Cat and Mad Jack the Pirate?

Do those toons go to Disney too since they were on Fox Kids?

Disney does own all of those.

They did a few things with The Tick back in the day. It was on Toon Disney back when Jetix was a thing. They were kind enough to release it on DVD, but two episodes were missing (largely because there was no space on the disks for them!) and they never released the third season. It's a shame, incidentally, that no one is trying to get it released to cash in on the new show.

The only other shows from the Fox Kids library Disney ever did anything with were the Marvel shows. If you had Toon Disney back in the day, they had all the 90s Marvel cartoons - plus Spider Man And His Amazing Friends.

Toon Disney had Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog too!

Also I'm sad that Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck, Goof Troop, and the Gummi Bears don't have complete series releases on DVD, with only 1 volume each away from completion. Talespin does and Ducktales KINDA does but the final volume was a Disney Movie Reward exclusive so it goes for way more than it should.

[up]I'm still waiting for The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh to get a DVD release. Hell they even remastered the damn thing, why is this a problem?

Oh on a side note, while this probably belongs more in Video Games, the upcoming Mega Drive/Genesis Mini will apparently feature some retro Disney games Castle of Illusion and World of Illusion, so it seems that Disney are still acknowledging their old video game library.

Wonder if this rises chances of rereleases of Star Wars or The Simpsons arcade games.

Same, I actually had earlier memories of the show over the original film due to a VHS of The Great Honey Pot Robbery and Stripes I had since I was a baby. I was actually kinda disappointed Stan and Heff weren't Pooh regulars and even in the show only appeared a couple of times.

Even after watching the films, New Adventures of Pooh I consider one of the most solid and heartfelt film to TV show translations besides a handful of nitpicks and liberties (no narrator/book format, very little of Kanga and Roo).

Out of curiosity is there any Disney film or franchise you kinda wanted to get a Recycled: The Series treatment, especially during the same 80s era when they were oozing with classic Disney style shows? I know ones for The Aristocats and a Bambi spin-off for Thumper were considered but didn't make the cut (along with the infamous pilots that got pasted into DTV sequels for Cinderella, Atlantis and Beauty and the Beast).

It's basically the next step of the camera Lotte Reiniger used for her work, which allowed him to give snow white a little bit more depth.

Wait, they're cutting the Crow scenes from Dumbo? How will Dumbo even work without the Crows? The Crows are integral to getting Dumbo to Fly. I understand they're Racist Caricatures of Black People, but the movie kind of stops working at the end without them. If they're going to do this, they might as well cut the entirety of Dumbo out of Disney+ (not that I'd be against that; Dumbo to me was never anything special, even with 'Baby Mine' and 'Pink Elephants on Parade', though I understand it has a place in a lot of people's hearts).

... Are they gonna cut the Native Americans out of Peter Pan too? And the Siamese Cats from Lady and the Tramp? The Siamese Cat from Aristocats?

[up] Agreed. This is probably going to give Netflix an advantage over Disney+. Disney may as well not put Dumbo on their service if they felt like they needed to edit the crow scenes out. Or they could have put up a warning like WB did on their classic cartoons collection.

Disney has censored cartoons with racist caricatures before (the centaurs in Fantasia, for example), and it's not as much of a problem in those cases because they were generally superfluous.

The crows in Dumbo, however, are integral to the plot. This, needless to say, is why Disney has kept the film unedited for years. How the hell are they going to taper over the giant plot hole caused by its removal?

Either put the film on there unedited or don't do it at all.

(I'm not complaining about Song Of The South. It was never really going to happen.)

Man, the ending's going to get so messed up. After the Pink Elephant scene, the crows are pretty integral to Dumbo learning that he can fly, and appear in the very final scene of the movie. They're not simple one-off character you can trim from the story without anyone noticing. People are going to know something's up with how the film is paced. Especially with since Dumbo is already one of Disney's shorter films.

Some are suggesting that Disney should simply pull the film altogether instead of chopping it up, which is understandable. I'd rather they not have it all then make it incomprehensible. The solution they should take is to directly address the outdated elements of the film and explain why the crows have not aged well. Maybe have a disclaimer at the beginning like the Looney Tunes DVDs where they admit the film includes negative stereotypes, or have a short documentary at the end examining the crows from a modern perspective.

It's a tricky subject to handle, especially for a film aimed at families. Kids will notice that something's missing if the editing is bad. I can personally attest to the amount of Looney Tunes shorts I watched where they removed the violence haphazardly. The direct approach is the best one, and it should be a learning experience regarding how much race relations have changed since the 1940's. Maybe there's another option I haven't considered, like locking Dumbo behind an age-restriction or something, but I'd like to hear it.

Although, I wonder if Disney will go to the effort of trying to animate new sequences to fill in the missing gaps with the crows in the film. The difference in quality will be pretty obvious but... it could happen.

[down] My best guess? Probably the recent remake has drawn more attention to the film. It won't be long until it comes onto the streaming service and that's when people are going to start searching for Dumbo again. I mean, hypothetically since the remake's not doing that great at the box-office.

My question is... why now?

The crows in Dumbo have come under criticism for years. Disney edited out the black centaurs in Fantasia long ago. Why not edit them out in the 90s or 00s? Yet the film's been on VHS and DVD unedited all this time.

Really odd of them to just decide to edit the crows out after all these years. Not that they should (for the aforementioned historical context/plot reasons).

Also, Dumbo is barely an hour long and the crow scene is at least 5 minutes. Will it still be considered a feature film if it dips below 60 minutes?

... Are they gonna cut the Native Americans out of Peter Pan too? And the Siamese Cats from Lady and the Tramp? The Siamese Cat from Aristocats?

They can probably get away with editing out the cat in The Aristocats since iirc he's a super minor character. Removing the Native Americans from Peter Pan is probably impossible since Tiger Lily is pretty plot important.

Can't comment on Lady and the Tramp since I haven't seen it in years.

I'm pretty sure the Siamese cats are the primary antagonists of that movie, so you're kind of stuck with them.
