Happy Superman Day.

Ooooh I heard some news, the Warworld Saga ends in September with an extra-oversized issue titled Superman: Apocalypse with the previous issue AC 1050 which should be released that month will be building it up. 1050 is also gonna be big.

"Epic ‘Kal-El Returns’ Superman crossover spins out of ‘Warworld Saga’ finale for new era of Superman"

DC Comics has announced a new Superman crossover event that wraps up Phillip Kennedy Johnson’s “Warworld Saga” and promises to send Kal-El back to Earth. The epic conclusion kicks off with Superman: Warworld Apocalypse #1 out on August 30th. The one-shot is by Johnson and Brandon Peterson & Will Conrad.

Following that one-shot, Superman will return to Earth in a six-part crossover Kal-El Returns with Superman: Son of Kal-El by Tom Taylor. The crossover event will take place over Action Comics #1047-1049 and Superman: Son of Kal-El #16-18.

“Superman: Warworld Apocalypse is everything we’ve been building to with the Warworld Saga, with the final battle between Superman and Mongul, between the Authority and the Unmade, and the long-awaited reveal of the real mastermind in the shadows,” said Johnson. “There are some frankly shocking moments in this issue, and some huge reveals that will have long-lasting repercussions in the DC Universe.”

“Action Comics #1047: Kal-El Returns is nothing less than the beginning of a NEW ERA for Superman,” added Johnson. “After the events of the Warworld Saga, Superman has returned to Earth with new allies but Lex Luthor has his own plans for Metropolis after he sees a great opportunity in the fall of Warworld. Plans that involve the return of one of Superman’s most classic villains, METALLO.”

Looks like Slimcoder gets their wish for Son of Kal-El to do something with a villain other than Henry Bendix. Guess I'll have to revise my "Bendix dies in issue #18" prediction.

The five best Superman writers are Dan Jurgens, Jeph Loeb, Geoff Johns, Kurt Busiek, and Peter J. Tomasi.

Someone wrote a humor article about Clark quitting the Daily Planet after it has gone downhill in terms of quality.

Dear Team,

I’m emailing this letter to the staff and posting it on my website to announce that I’m quitting The Daily Planet today. Unfortunately, I am unable to finish the articles assigned to me this week about “Instagram Hacks for Becoming More Self-Involved,” “Why Having A Yacht Will Make Anybody Nice,” and “Ten Outfits To Make You Look Sexy While Blowing Up The Universe.” This new reporting style doesn’t fit me.

I’m going to miss The Daily Planet. Before Lex Luthor’s hedge fund bought us out and we started reporting only by telephone, I loved running to crime scenes. I appreciated how understanding you were when I disappeared for my long breaks. I’ll never forget the time I helped Lois write the article that exposed the Brainiac for making Superman tweet pictures of himself twerking during a tense summit meeting with the president.

And wow, what a ride it’s been since Lex started giving us the opportunity to write numerous articles, every day! I’ve tried to get with the program. I stuck post-its on my desk that say “tell the truth,” “save the little guy,” and “do it for America.” I’ve been reading All The President’s Men every night. Despite such efforts, I couldn’t write today about how neon spandex man bikinis (properly arranged) can distract most people from noticing mayhem.

Lois told me about what happened when she turned in her eighth article for the day with “hgfffffft” in the last paragraph. She said she was trying to finish while Mister Mxyzptlk attacked her with a meat cleaver.

Since you fired her for that, she’s been blogging from home on the weekends. Her first article revealed that Solomon Grundy has been publishing some dangerous Instagram photos: they turn teenagers into zombie-like creatures that can do nothing but take incessant selfies.

Not many people have seen Lois’ expose yet, since the search engines always rank the Legion of Doom’s website higher than hers. I’m going to join her effort and learn how to market her work. We’re excited that we can still cover the news that saves the world, while also sifting through millions of technical manuals online to find the one or two that explain how to post long-form articles on Twitter in only a few hundred simple steps.

Meanwhile, I’m happy to help you all with this transition. I can share the excel sheet that I made for my in-depth investigation into the nice things that yacht owners have done in recent years; it lists the number of times Lex stroked his hairless cat. Some of the other items might need more analysis. For example, Lex provided free training to publishers, which is nice, except that it consisted of three people who visited only a handful of newsrooms each year. Mostly, the “trainers” explained how to solve the publishing industry’s financial problems by paying for Lex’s services, such as his unique analytical tool for collecting data about pictures of Tiktok dancers.

The girl Lex hired to replace Lois seems to have mastered the googling part of reporting. My recommendation would be that you give her enough time to follow up on her first front-page story, “Superman Moons Metropolis From the Sky.” She might try asking Superman for a comment on what he was doing. She should fact-check this, but rumor has it that Superman stripped while he was flying in a bid to garner more attention on Twitter. He was already halfway naked anyway when he started wearing red spandex underwear. Everybody has googled “Superman and butt” at least once, so maybe mooning people will improve his search engine rankings.

Stay in touch. You can find me on Twitter, where I will do my best to ensure that journalism remains a noble cause!

Sincerely,

Clark Kent

By way of Bleeding Cool, the preview for Dark Crisis: Worlds Without A Justice League – Superman #1 is online now!

The story so far: When we last saw Clark Kent, aka the original Superman, he was Pariah'd alongside the rest of the Justice League and Justice League Incarnate. While Earth thinks him and the other heroes dead, Clark was actually flung to an alternate world.

A world without a Justice League.

More critically, a world where Clark's own son, Jon Kent, was never rapidly aged because of dumb executive mandates and a writer of subjectively inconsistent quality bordering on bad his father, Jor-El.

This is that world.

And right off the bat, leave it to Tom King for being the master of making things feel "off" in what's supposed to be a utopia for Clark. Like, there's an offness to Lois' grouchy behavior and there's an offness to Jon's grotesque nightmares. Plus, the story is being divided into chapters. In the preview, we see the chapters being called "Thirteen" and "Fourteen". I'll bet this is referencing the years that Clark missed hanging out with Jon, like he missed seeing Jon at thirteen and fourteen and so on.

TL;DR: Hoooo, boy.

So the last issue of AC officially brought back Kenny Braverman/Conduit, finally fulfilling what Dan Jurgens originally planned to do when he was still writing Action Comics.

He appears in the back-up detailing how people are doing back on Earth, he's locked up but he's being hired by Amanda Waller (presumably this takes place before the current Suicide Squad run) and outfitted with a genesis-powered suit to get back the genesis power-source Superman took.

I just finished the King/Burnham Worlds Without a Justice League one-shot. The tl;dr: you don't have to worry about Jon getting killed gruesomely or whatever. This is very much a story about seeing your kid grow up and starting to discover themselves and the bittersweet nature of being a parent, as the last few pages spell out explicitly.

In terms of plot, basically Jon realizes how awful the universe is outside of Earth, particularly on Apokolips. Clark feels he can't do anything to change the universe, and it's implied he already tried and failed to topple Darkseid. Eventually, though, Jon attacks Apokolips (where an evil Orion is torturing the populace), and though he's beaten Clark comes to rescue him. From there, Clark and Jon defend Earth from Darkseid's attacks. A few years later Jon goes back to Apokolips, but this time actually beats Orion, though he comes back bloody and battered. At the end he sets off to right more wrongs in the universe with Clark and Lois' blessing; there's also the implication that Clark recognizes on some level it's not "real" but at the same time he's deeply grateful for the chance to actually get to see Jon grow up the way he couldn't in mainstream continuity.

Isn't "Supes" already dead thanks to Dark crisis?

Dc is planning his next fake death even before he's back to life.

Could be announcing a new anniversary edition for the event

[up][up] Plus they already announced a "Superman Returns" crossover between AC and Son of Kal.

So it make no sense to kill off Clark again.

or jon will be the real death for this crisis

[up][up] "That...would actually track with Tom Taylor's reaction. surprised"

...Is what I would be saying if Taylor didn't already debunk it recently.

So yeah, we're probably not going to see the Death of Teen Jon Kent just to have Kid Jon again. Carry on, folks. tongue

EDIT: [up] Yeah, that might be more realistic.

They do like putting Clark through near death experiences thoungh. I think there were several old "Superman has a fatal illness" stories in the Silver Age. And even Superfriends had a death of Superman episode.

Reposting from the DC thread:

‘The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special’ #1 shows four new POVs on Superman’s death

So the Death of Superman announcement is a new 80-page anthology special about 4 different POV's from Superman's death, reprising all the creators involved in the original story

It’s the 30th anniversary of the death of Superman, and DC Comics is going all out. Not only is there a new deluxe edition reprinting the story–more on that here–but a special 80-page anthology with four stories detailing new perspectives and points of view on the death of Superman.

“All these years later, it’s a great pleasure to get back together with the story’s original creative teams to celebrate a truly exciting time in comics,” Jurgens said in a statement sent by DC Comics. “The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special will reignite some memories. For those who weren’t around to experience it, well…we hope you get a hint of what it was like.”

“The Life of Superman” by Dan Jurgens (W & A), Brett Breeding (A), Brad Anderson (C), and John Workman (L) – A young Jon Kent finds out in school that his dad had died years earlier, as his parents never told him about that fateful day. In the midst of dealing with this emotional news, Jon and Clark need to team up to fight a new villain connected to Doomsday called DOOMBREAKER

“Standing Guard” by Roger Stern (W), Butch Guice (A), Glenn Whitmore (C), and Rob Leigh (L) – The epic battle between Superman and Doomsday from the Guardians’ perspective

“Time” by Louise Simonson (W), Jon Bogdanove (A), Glenn Whitmore (C), and Rob Leigh (L) – The story of how the death of Superman looked from John Henry Irons’s perspective

“Above and Beyond” by Jerry Ordway (W), Tom Grummett (P), Doug Hazelwood (I), Glenn Whitmore (C), and Rob Leigh (L) – A powerful story of Ma and Pa Kent watching their son fight Doomsday live on television and going through Clark’s photo albums with the feeling that their son always prevails

Nice to see kid Jon again in Saved by the Belle Reve that came out this week. The story was a bit Anvilicious in its framing but it's a sequence I can absolutely see playing out with Jon and Damian coming to the aid of a non-binary transfer student.
