Needs Help: Product Placement

The example sections are confused. For example "Internet" is about websites being promoted within movies/shows, but "Videogames" talks about Product Placement IN videogames.

I suppose the question is whether the trope concerns works that use Product Placement, or products that are placed in works. We should pick one and stick to it.

The problem I see is that folders aren't organized by media format the given trope appears in, like virtually any other trope page, but by what general product is being advertised in the first place.

And, naturally, the folders with the broadest titles (i.e. "Anything and Everything") are significantly larger than any "variant" that's being specified.

I just don't get why the products being advertised is given more focus than the works that are providing the examples. I'm assuming somebody wanted to make an attempt at having a Self-Demonstrating Article, but I especially do not appreciate how that plan was executed, especially if it means a largely different form of categorizing that we don't use anywhere else on the wiki.

I also wonder if we really need to separate it by straight examples and parodies as it is now. Especially as the examples don't follow that all the time anyway. In that case, just tossing the upper part down and using the upper examples header would work.

Sorting would not require TRS consensus. I think we could split the parodies into a subtrope too, but that doesn't require TRS consensus either.

I created Sandbox.Product Placement to help with sorting. While working on it, there will be three sections: Sorted, unsorted, and parodies.

Work needed:

• Sort the unsorted section. Some might go down to the parody section.
• Rewrite examples to fit the new structure.
• Check the parody section for straight examples.
• Namespacing.
• Make sure the page is formatted properly and examples are indented as they should.

Edit: Just realised the current second point: Many examples will have to be rewritten to fit the structure.

I'm currently just sorting what I know off-hand where it belongs. Might do some errors where one franchise exists in multiple media, and the example isn't clear which it speaks about.

I've roughly sorted most things. By that I mean I've tossed the examples in the hopefully appropriate folders. There's still a page or two worth of examples I don't know where they fit, which would take some extensive research (i.e. taking a few seconds to check their pages), and lots of duplicates, since several series were in several categories before.

I kept two categories: Mascot Games and Stadiums & Events. Those seem to work rather well as their own categories for this trope. The former is a type of game based entirely on this trope, and the second is a valid category that's pretty much never used in other trope pages.

Now I'm going to take a break for one or a few days, depending on what extra time I have.

Did a bunch of cleaning and stuff.

There's just three examples in the Unsorted category, which I renamed Other, as I have no idea what two of them are. The third is about This Very Wiki.

I've sorted and cleaned all examples down to and including Film - Live Action. Some of them needed to be rewritten, but not nearly as many as I thought. Might be worse in other categories. Natter was worse, as was intendation issues. And if anyone's wondering, sorting is done to get rid of all duplicates, since those can be hard to spot in large categories like film and TV.

Will probably continue in a bit.

Edit:

Now done to Live Action TV (which was on occasion pretty bad), which means the two largest categories are done. The biggest left now is Video Games.

If anyone wants to namespace the page, it would be nice.

The Yakuza example in "Other" seems to refer to the video game of that name. The example below it is clearly Advertising. I moved them both.

The whole "Mascot Games" section should be called "Advergames" and be a trope of its own. (After all, Everybody Owns a Ford and Everyone Owns a Mac already exist pretty much as subtropes of Product Placement.)

Yeah, I was thinking whether or not to split them into a subtrope. Would that need YKTTW, or is it enough to just split it from here?

Speaking of those other two subtropes, if a work uses them along with other product placements, would it be fine to move that to the subtrope, and possibly keep a reference to it, like, "Everyone in Heroes uses a Nissan, see Everybody Owns a Ford?

I'm wondering about the arena bit. Is that really Product Placement, or something else? There's no product, just an arena named by the owner. It's really no more Product Placement than regular advertising. It might be its own trope, though, though I wonder if it belongs on TV Tropes... I'm leaving that alone for now (and mascot games, for reasons stated above).

Anyway, everything is sorted and cleaned now on Sandbox.Product Placement. Feel free to go over it and make sure it's kosher.

What more can be done?

• Namespacing. Not necessary, but pleasant.
• Breaking out Mascot Games to a subtrope. If the subtrope is pulled through YKTTW, there's no need for TRS action, just move the examples there. Also not necessary.
• What to do about the Stadiums? Leave, remove, or move? If move, where?
• Move (or remove if already there) Everybody Owns a Ford and Everyone Owns a Mac examples to subtropes. I don't think there were singular examples, though, and personally I think it might be a good idea to list all product placement of a work in one place, even if some of it fit a subtrope too. What's the policy on that?
• Replace content of Product Placement with Sandbox.Product Placement. Would need to take edits after 25 December into account, as those are not present in the sandbox.
• Close thread and bring the number of threads down.

Not really. Companies sponsor stadiums mostly to get mentioned, and have their logo appear, on TV (after all, sports are reality shows for people who don't like reality shows, as Professional Wrestling deftly exposes). It's not really much more effective as advertising than just having your company's name randomly dropped without any further context.

Do they account for some other trope, or can they just be deleted? Though if anyone really wants them they can remain in the sandbox while the rest is moved to the Product Placement page.

I've finished the job now, and Main.Product Placement is updated.

If someone else wants to, you can move the mascot games to their own subtrope. Otherwise they're fine where they are, since this is still a proper trope for them.

The stadium folder has been left out of the move, but remains in Sandbox.Product Placement until that gets deleted if someone wants to do anything about it.
