Our Next Feature Presentation: The Stuff (10/12)

Join Us Saturday, October 12th @ ~8:00PM (US/EDT) Here: http://cytu.be/r/TroperCoven

For the uninitiated... A contingent of tropers (mostly from across America) holds regular get-togethers over the Interwebs on this site called Synchtube which lets individuals, such as ourselves, open and join in text-based chatrooms within typical web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, et. al.) that allow the chat participants to view YouTube videos in synchronization with everyone else present (without even needing to set up an account)... and we've decided to use said chatrooms to play cheeseball webvideos and feature-length movies found in the public domain which stretch all the way from letters B to Z, which everyone subsequently riffs on a la MST3K.

For over EIGHT years, everybody who gets involved mostly finds good enjoymentnote  in calling out tropes that are recognized in the videos and stories and coming up with jokes to fling back at whatever's happening on the screen, many of which turn into various in-jokes and running gags (a Coven Glossary is kept and maintained for everyone's help and convenience HERE) to repeat in the chat.

We're always looking for new ways to better coordinate and expand our activities and are more than happy to welcome newcomers interested in joining our gatherings.

Alright, as I promised, the under-appreciated (yet, sadly, fake) reality program I'm With Busey returns to pre-show tonight. This series was my first proper introduction to Gary Busey when it first aired on Comedy Central around the turn of the millennium, and I'm sure it holds up extremely well.

Plus, another round of "Thrift Haul" on Super Deluxe.

Then, at the top of the coming hour, John Lithgow takes a crack at being an all-conquering crime boss in Hollow Point.

After seeing this, I wondered if we could watch it sometime. It's French, it's hand-drawn, it's steampunk (they outright say the world is "stuck in the age of steam" in the trailer), and it's got an awkwardly anatomically correct cat- uh, scratch that last one.

But it's a fun movie with some strange twists.

[up]Is there a dub version? You know how I feel about running subtitled movies in a text chat.

I'll be open to further suggestions for upcoming movies, if anybody has any.

Anyway, we've seen a lot of absolutely terrible bullshit from the production company behind tonight's movie... Panman ([awesome][awesome]), The Amazing Bulk ([awesome][awesome]), and maybe one or two others that I'm completely forgetting about at this moment. (And they're still going strong churning out really hackneyed bait-and-switch mockbusters that would make The Asylum jealous, like Darker Things and It Kills)

This title, in particular, really seems to be pushing the limits of tolerable quality. The trailer alone is a borderline parody of every overused, overblown movie trailer cliche (you'll know what I'm talking about when you see/hear it); it's so absurd, it's nearly unwatchable (even a character in the video thumbnail is getting a massive headache).

The most clear thing in the way of a movie synopsis is a line from the production company reading, "[T]he story of one man's journey through his psychotic break." The film is told from the perspective of a wild headcase as he runs from "the authorities" and claims his innocence (innocence of what, I don't know).

Here's Devil 2.0

well i know about this thing that somehow got 3 stars on rogerebert.com

from that review:
But at the 50-minute mark, the film enters a grotesque funhouse-style recreation of a Boschian hellscape. I can honestly tell you: I have yet to pick my jaw up off the floor after spending almost 30 minutes(!) watching this aglet-less shoestring budget vision of Hell. Is it good? Uh, well, kind of. Does it make sense? Hmm, er, ask me another. Is it worth seeing? Oh, absolutely.

and from a comment on that review

If you came across this movie knowing nothing about it, watched a bit and then turned it off 30 minutes in because it didn't really seem like it was going anywhere, you could be forgiven for thinking that you weren't missing much.

But then you'd never see the jaw-dropping descent into Hell that Simon describes. It really is like a bargain basement fusion of a nightmare Catholic sermon and a Dario Argento/David Lynch collaboration. Without missing a beat, the film goes from goofy and vaguely unsettling to suddenly terrifying, despite it's inherent absurdity. Voodoo is eventually an exercise in spiritual despair which is simple but delivers a horrific sort of circular logic. Definitely a future cult classic.

[up]That trailer is certainly atrocious, and those quotes make me skeptical, especially the reader comment that sounds way too good to be true. I'm getting early flashbacks to Spring/Summer 2004 when horror websites were hyping this upcoming release in a few months time called Saw (You might have heard of it) as a cross between "Alfred Hitchcock and Se7en."

On a semi-related note, 'The Serpent and the Rainbow' also received 3-Stars in a much older review from Roger Ebert.

The French movie is dubbed, actually, so no worries there. The dub's pretty good.

Alright, best to be coming here early tonight, because in all likelihood, I'm With Busey is going to be a bigger highlight than this movie (or, at least, more watchable).

Plus, we got a crazy new video from cRiT1KaL and some other videos from VICE.

Then, at the top of the coming hour, we figure out what the deal is with Devil 2.0

[up][up][up][up] Shoestring version of Hell indeed. It looks like it has a little bit of a greater-than-zero budget actually, but some scenes look like they came from a You Tube video.

I have several picks that have I have stored in my personal library for just such an occasion:

First off, E.T. 's Henry Thomas, a video game-obsessed kid, gets involved in high-stakes espionage when he sees a dying FBI agent that gives him an Atari game that contains top-clearance military secrets embedded in its coding and entrusts Thomas with it.

Cloak and Dagger [1984]:

Next is a double-bill by one of my favorite anime directors, Mamoru Hosada, and both of his films have English dubs that are very good:

Summer Wars:

Wolf Children:

Clip:

Also, I would like to recommend What We Do In The Shadows, directed and starring Taika Waititi, best known for Flight of the Conchords, a mockumentary following a group of vampires who've grown accustomed to their eternal damnation and have basically been slumming it until their latest "roommate" tries to reignite their passion for life.

What We Do In The Shadows:

Trailer:

Clip:

Another bit of trash Star Wars history that I've had in my library are the two Ewoks TV specials that aired in 1984 and 1985 that has almost a bad reputation as the Holiday Special among older fans, if not worse. Behold the two projects that have [mostly] been forgotten by time AND managed to get Wilford Brimley roped in.

Behold Ewoks: The Battle for Endor:

And Ewoks: Caravan Of Courage:

That's quite a large selection there, Ship!

I know someone who would probably love to watch Wolf Children. She kept telling me about it and showing me clips and saying it was cute. However, due to time differences (she lives in Australia), she'd have a hard time joining us, but I could let her know when we're going to watch it ahead of time if I know enough days in advance.

And that first movie sounds delightfully strange. I hope it's a fun one.

Ewoks specials too... I wonder if they feel like Mini-Star Wars or something. Not into Star Wars myself (I enjoyed some of the movies, but they're not what I'd watch a second time), but they could be fun for us to check out.

Oh, Ho-Oh-HOOOOoooooooooooo...

As much as I'd love to continue with Karate Warrior sequels parts 3 thru 6 (Yes, there are SIX) this Kung Fu Friday, especially after last week's was so incredibly amazingly absurdly stupid, I'm holding off on that for... something with Dennis Farina in it.

Per IMDb:

Two cops, one with a gun and one with his fists, risk everything to make the neighborhood crime and drug free by taking down the most powerful street lord.

This is Street Crimes.

Oh, Ho-Oh-HOOOOOOooooooooooo...

Kicking off Kung Fu Friday now with more of Takeshi's Castle and a collection of Marc Dacascos' greatest on-screen fights.

Then, at the top of the coming hour, Dennis Farina stars in Street Crimes.

[up]The first three that came up for me were "Islamic Feminist," "Progressive Neo-Globalist," and "Bolshevik Anti-Ba'athist." Best thing since the Giallo Generator. (EDIT: "Randian Afro-Capitalist") (EDIT 2: "Catholic Anti-Luddite," "Post-Colonial Ethno-Monarchist," "Libertarian Crypto-Fascist" This is amazing!)

Anyway, as has been customary for us this time of year since the beginning of this group's existence, this weekend in September is dubbed The Barbarian Brothers weekend. Pre-show this Saturday and Sunday will be loaded with as many short clips of them as we can find (including Barbarian David's increasing affinity for new age spiritualism and Barbarian Peter's tragic descent into utter madness)

Tonight, we'll be revisiting the Brothers' first leading roles (after appearing in the ensemble cast of Joel Schumacher's D.C. Cab years earlier) in the Golan-Globus production that set the rest of their brief movie careers in motion: The 1987 fantasy-adventure The Barbarians...

So tonight we got a comedy movie with George Carlin and a young Ben Stiller from around the time when he was still goofing around on MTV.

The pair play two janitors at brokerage firm who become rich by making investments based on insider information they gather from the brokers' garbage.

Damn good starting premise, I must say. This is Working Tra$h...

Anyone else watch Netflix's Atypical? I'm enjoying the second season. It's a nice improvement over the first.

I don't watch TV, but I have occasionally watched the rare Netflix show I've liked. Which includes Jessica Jones (the first season had a brilliant idea - super strong woman versus mind control man), and the animated adventure The Hollow.

Actually, I think those three are the only Netflix shows I've ever watched.

#20671: Sep 18th 2018 at 6:38:19 AM

[up]I haven't streamed anything on Netflix in years, so I sadly can't say that I'm familiar with any of those shows. The only thing I ever recall streaming there were old seasons of The X-Files.

Anyway, we've found the weapons of mass destruction!

Tonight we have a 1994 movie about a munitions engineer contracted by Saddam Hussein to build him a "super gun," consequentially attracting the attention of several intelligence agencies.

Here comes the sensationally titled, Doomsday Gun, starring Frank Langella, Alan Arkin, Clive Owen... and Kevin Spacey.
