As a long-time fan of Yamato, I will say it's definitely different than the first, with more of a feel towards its "Star Blazers" incarnation. The reason I say this, is because the anime version spams the hell out of the Wave Motion Gun, while this one uses it like a real superweapon should be: only when necessary. It is not only because it's so damned powerful, but also the fact that it shuts down the systems more.

I like how they've got all these different toys with the Yamato they are either using instead of the Wave motion gun, becuase you get to see just how exactly this ship is awesome - something you only saw in snippets form the movies (before it got blown to pieces - something that seems to happen in ALL the movies) or from the tech books (what few of them there were), which was such a waste.

I'm feeling very satisfied with how this series is going, and I hope it continues this way till the enc.

It's been a while since I first saw the original Space Battleship Yamato, but I was personally surprised how few times wave motion gun was used. Maybe like three times.

Well well well, episode 14 was VERY interesting, even for me who isn't as involved in the Yamato mythos as many in this thread. Problem is, it also threw in more questions.

So, what do we have?

* We have an Iscandrian woman definitely, but is it Yurisha, or Starsha? The weird memory attack muddles things a lot, but it does seem to point to Yuki (not necessarily THIS Yuki) and Yurisha interacting in the past. * What happens to Misaki now? I'm assuming that this is a new development that doesn't quite mirror what happened in the first series. Is Misaki gone? Or rather is this new personality more of a meld of Misaki and "Yuria", whoever this consciousness is?

Well, 2199 is starting its' TV Voyage on the 5th April, 1700 Hours Local Time — expect the tread to get busy afterwards...

Right now, I've got to Episode 11/14. By the way, does anything think 2199 needs it's own Trope Page? It especially needs it's own Character Page, due to use of the Gender Flip and New Characters.

I think so too, especially with the Misaki/Yuria thing, which WASN'T in the original airing, or any of the movies.

Same, I'll work on the Character Page — by the way, anyone else who has got to Ep.14 picked up hints of a Sanada/Niimi/Mamoru Kodai Love Triangle, or at least if they knew each other at some point?

Also, we really need someone immersed in the original series, as apparently there's a ton of continuity nods/shout outs for those who know about them. For example, had Ithekro from Asuki not pointed the fact, I'd have missed how the Yamato "sinking" in Pluto was a reference to how it ended up in the last episode of its last season. Ditto with the Galman Wolf appearing early into the series, and is aligned with Gammilon to boot!

I've just watched Episode 13: Interesting, to say the least.

Is Mamoru the "he" Sanada and Niimi are referring to?

If Mamoru is the "he", then Niimi certainly felt something for the Elder Kodai — and both her and Sanada were good friends with Mamoru, at least.

Episode 14 — very Neon Genesis Evangelion-esque. It practically had Hideaki Anno's fingerprints all over it, even if he wasn't involved with the Episode...

I'm... not sure I like that rebranding. I mean I know Starblazers has some nostalgia value for people in America, but I wanted this to be, you know, a straight dub of Yamato and not some edited franken-anime like the original was.

I caught episode 10 by accident.

I feel like I'm missing a lot of stuff.

But I do know most of those blue guys are dicks, and that it had a Cat Fight.

So I'm in for all the wrong reasons, but I'll check it out all the same.

Yep, it did on the 7th April.

I really need to work on the Character Pages — looks like Kaoru Niimi and Miki Saijo are examples of the Ensemble Dark Horse on Pixiv.

You mean Dr. Sado's nurse? I'd have expected Yuria to have a bigger chunk of the fandom pie, twintails aside now that she's possessed by a certain Iscandarian.

Did we ever get the name of the person Dessler is playing chess with via phone?

Well, I think we've mostly caught up with the Blu-Ray releases, sub-wise. Episodes 15-18 were great, particularly the massive ship battles of 15 (the ambush) and 18 (the fleet review — Anavel Gato would be proud at the havoc that was wreaked).

Lots of confirmations too, with Misaki coming out and flatly admitting that Yurisha's been sharing her body.

According to the old hands of Yamato, Domel's counterattack next episode should be a major turning point, as apparently in the original the attack left Yamato crippled, with its crew gutted, and they had to spend a whole month recovering from the damage before heading off to the Iscandar system.

Finally caught up again. Goodbye Balun!

I wonder what they did to the Mutineer-in-chief, Whatshisface. Part of me is hoping for him being spaced, but probably just arrested.

[up]

Take note this little stunt pretty much cut off Gamilas from their holdings in the Milky way, as Balun was the gate hub for this galaxy. While the fleet at Balun can still Geschtam jump, it'll take them a whole lot longer to get back to Gamilas, which explains the setup for episode 19 (where Domel has to make do with a crew of boys and old men). So in one unexpected blow the Yamato crippled the Empire's movements in the galaxy, which will likely have SERIOUS repercussions if the series continues on to stuff like the Comet Empire/Gatlantis.
