Name of trope is a rape pun.

For the record, this was discussed in the Special Efforts thread on rape titles.

What's the actual Japanese term for that dessert?

(Because if couples in non-Japanese media eat crepes, it's not a trope as far as I can tell.)

I believe they still call them crepes.

It's called a crepe, and while it is not a trope outside of Japan, it is very much a Japanese thing that you do on dates.

In that case... I dunno, is this a rape pun? Maybe no one will notice. But Crepe Date is probably just as good anyway.

Yes. It's explicitly listed as such as in the Just For Pun index.

Is there any way it could be expanded to other sweets?

Honestly, I just can't find it in me to care even if the pun is intentional. It's a perfectly straightforward name that doesn't have anything to do with rape.

And no, it can't be expanded without losing the trope which is this particular sweet.

How is this a pun? Am I missing something?

Date Rape, lu. In America, crepe is pronounced the same. And someone put it on the Just For Pun index.

Though I'm not completely sure it needs a rename, we at least need to pull it off the index.

I think it's because it's spelled like "date rape". That said, my English spelling sucks.

@lu 127: I have to agree - it's not a word I've ever actually heard, but I always thought crepe was pronounced "creh-PAY" or something like that, not "crape".

That said, if this is actually meant as a date rape pun, then I have to agree that, whether it falls under our content violations policy or not, it's tasteless and should be turned into something like Crepe Date instead.

[up] I think it's meant to be pronounced that way (some spellings put that ^ accent on the middle E or something), but I've only ever heard "crape" said. Crepe Date is alright but not as good, because the word order does change the meaning slightly.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.

Yeah, I'm baffled because I've never heard of "creh-p" pronounced as "c-rape". Might be hanging out in the wrong places in the world.

And I always pronounce it like "crepp"... That being said, is "in some cases of pronunciation rhymes with date rape" grounds for a rename? I'm not warming up for it. "Trope is wider than as currently named" would be though.

It got mentioned on Reddit.

Edit: To distance it from "rape", would it help to put the accent on (through a custom title), so it'd be "Crêpe"? That's the title of the Wikipedia article, which also gives American pronunciation as "crape".

...the home of fandom wank! But I didn't see it as a rape pun, but I guess we can reverse it since it is a trope.

If we reverse it, it loses clarity and no longer sounds like the trope.

I'd like to support Telcontar's proposal: Custom title to Date Crêpe. That keeps the title, but breaks the connection to rape (which, as has been mentioned before, needs to be pointed out to non-native speakers).

The custom title is good and not hard at all.
