You legitimately think no kid/toddler ever has thrown a tantrum over being told to stop watching tv/stop playing videogames?

Like... are you doing a bit?

Television addiction was indeed the "social media addiction" of my era. Ever heard the term "couch potato"?

Heck, I'm sure I've thrown tantrums when I was a kid at being told to stop watching TV by my parents.

And in the 90s it was Videogames who was the big addiction concern.

Books used to be banned left and right back then. Heck, they even banned Dr. Seuss' The Lorax for the supposed accusations about the book trying to paint the logging industry in a bad light, when that is clearly not the actual intention of the book.

So, does anyone know why You Tube is no longer doing their yearly rewind videos?

They stopped in 2020 due to the pandemic and in 2021 You Tube announced they'd not bring them back. In guessing the fact they tended to have abysmal reception, along with big YouTubers ability to end up involved in scandals potentially making those videos akward as hell made the decision to just not bother appealing.

Plus ya know it's just cheaper not to

Even when they made them they explained it was hard to make something that felt representative (see their reception) so that probably weighted in on the "Why bother" scale

It didn't help that 2019 played it too safe and it was basically a glorified Watch Mojo video.

So fun discovery of the day, you can actually set You Tube Kids to only let the kid view videos, channels or groups that you’ve approved from the parent account, but it’s such a pain to do so that it feels like You Tube have made it deliberatly difficult so you’ll give up and default to their own age based categorisations.

Yeah, and that also requires that the parents do a lot of searching of Youtube for good channels, which they may lack the time or experience for.

I think the underlying problem is that there is no curation system for Youtube. It's not like television, where every program is checked for appropriateness by the channel beforehand. On Youtube, the user has to do that themselves, and that's kind of an impossible task.

Channels do control the appropriateness of what they upload, what we’re seeing is that parents have been subscribing to channels which will upload whatever makes them the most money without any concern for child wellbeing.

If you set a You Tube kid’s account to only subscribe to Disney and CBBC then you’ve got Disney and the BBC curating the content for you.

Man, watching older youtube videos with animated squares at the end really shows their Unintentional Period Piece. Why did youtube remove them (I believe tied to annotations?) again?

[up]X3 Happy to help. I actually discovered all this because my sister was visiting and saying how she was letting her son use You Tube Kids less because it kept recommending trash, so I got her to let me poke around in the settings menu to see if I could find a way to tighten things up.

So this is mostly peripherally related to YouTube since most of the hooplah is happening over on Twitter, Reddit, and Instagram, but I'd say it still counts given that it's Smosh, but it's amazing how much they've completely incited their fanbase into a rabid frenzy over trying to figure out if Shayne and Courtney actually did get married or if it's one massively elaborate April Fool's prank, given that if it's a prank, it's one that spans back months. Even their weekly podcast today was just one massive troll that their fans genuinely can't decide if it's real or not.

Has Youtube been running like shit on Chrome for anyone else? Videos only play for a few seconds before buffering, and loading the comments and other videos makes the page lag like crazy.

I use Chrome, and it runs fine for me, other then a video stuttering a bit at the start some times, but I chalk that up to the ad blocker that I use.

So, I'm wondering, how come You Tube doesn't put in security measures for their site, whenever a content creator's account gets hacked? Lately, there's been a lot of You Tube accounts being hacked (mostly through emails that a content creator gets from a fake sponsor) and yet, You Tube doesn't seem to do much to make sure that accounts don't get hacked.
