Basically the answer to the question of what Niv-Mizzet has been up to during this whole mess.

Proft confronts Niv-Mizzet over his lack of concern for what happened despite being the Living Guildpact in charge of protecting Ravnica. He figures that it wasn't due to negligence but because Niv-Mizzet was focused on a bigger project. Said project being an attempt to map out the new Omenpaths and make Ravnica the hub of the Multiverse. And Proft wants in on said project, using his show of deduction to convince Niv-Mizzet that hiring Proft and Etrata would be a good idea. The whole thing was basically Proft making a pitch to Niv-Mizzet.

Well, that's quite the all-star cast on the Caper Crew. It really makes me wonder what each of them is hoping to accomplish by joining, and in some cases how they survived to get to Thunder Junction in the first place.

Also, here's today's side story.

Blood is Thicker than Venom

Annie Flash doesn't fight her ghosts—she runs from them. That running's taken her to a small town on the very edge of the frontier, where danger lurks out in the dunes.

Oko unsurprisingly is a jerk.

While he was initially thrown off by meeting his son Kellan for the first time, he quickly starts thinking Kellan will be useful. That's not the kind of thing a father should be thinking of a son he's only just met.

And boy, the multiverse was unlucky — of all the Planeswalkers to not be desparked after Phyrexia's multiversal invasion, they had to include Oko and the one who hired him Ashiok.

I mean, realistically we were never going to get a situation where all of the previously free-roaming assholes were staying relatively contained or limited to omenpaths. They're so useful for creating plots!

While Akul scours the frontier for the missing artifact, Oko's gang goes looking for answers inside a speeding train.

Side story: A Long Way from Home

Nashi lost his mother to the Phyrexian invasion of the Multiverse. On Thunder Junction, he's doing his best to carry on her work—but Nashi's never been able to stay out of trouble for long.

Episode 4: Finding Tarnation

A Pleasant Family Outing

The secret to finding the outlaw town of Tarnation rests in the vast graveyard of Thief's Folly. Can the Cecani siblings put aside their squabbles long enough to find it?

So, now we know why the siblings are on Thunder Junction; Geralf wants to study whether Your Magic's No Good Here applies to the Multiverse.

The highlights:

  • "Ashiok" is actually Jace in disguise. It's possible that the Ashiok we saw in Eldraine might have been Jace too. And he's still got Phyrexian implants. He and Vraska were conning the rest of the heist team from the start.

  • The treasure in the vault isn't a treasure. It's an infant of some mysterious species. Jace and Vraska take the baby with them before planeswalking away.

  • Oko's well and truly burned his bridges with Kellan. Oko almost feels bad about that at the end, but true to character he gets over it.

  • The silver lining is that this made Kellan more comfortable with his fae heritage and powers. He uses his newly realized power to hypnotize Akul and trap him in the vault, presumably for good.

  • The heist team break up to do their own stuff, though Oko promises to get in touch with them for bigger scores and possible payback against Jace and Vraska.

  • Rakdos has formed an Odd Friendship with Tinybones.

  • Kellan sticks around in Thunder Junction, turning down a job offer from Ral Zarek in Ravnica. Both because he wants to help out Annie at her ranch since she was the only member of the heist team he truly befriended and because Amalia was waiting for him. It seems Kellan's relationship with Amalia is a bit more than platonic.

Speaking of Kellan,

Having seen the spoilers for his card, I noticed that this one doesn't have an Adventure unlike the other Kellan cards from previous sets. It makes sense lore-wise. He was on an adventure through the multiverse looking for Oko. Now that he's found him and wants nothing to do with him anymore, Kellan's adventure is done.

Jace reconnects with his mom and even starts a new family with Vraska.

The Fomori child they adopted, Loot, somehow has a map of the entire Multiverse in his mind. Said map even includes the Omenpaths and how they all connect.

If Fomorians like Loot had the power to map the entire multiverse, that might explain how they were able to establish a multiversal empire.

Oh, and the story also had card spoilers.

Loot, the Key to Everything is a Mythic Rare Legendary Beast Noble. It costs GUR, is 1/2, and has Ward 1. At the beginning of each upkeep it lets you exile X cards from the top of your library where X is the number of card types among the non-land permanents you control. You can then play the cards from exile until end of turn.

That's a pretty powerful ability, and the Ward 1 makes it a little harder for opponents to remove Loot before you get a chance to benefit from the ability at least once.

Edit:

Also, it's confirmed that while the Ashiok that trapped Eldraine in a nightmare with Eriette was the real Ashiok, the Ashiok that later freed Eriette from prison at the end of the story was Jace in disguise.

He's also the one who knocked out Proft with a lead pipe in the Murders at Karlov Manor story.

So given some of the lore in the Omenpath arc, I'm guessing that the next Big Bad faction will be the Fomori. It'll be interesting to learn they went from an empire that somehow spanned the multiverse despite the difficulties of planar travel for non-planeswalkers before the Omenpaths to nomads represented in only two cards for so long, the Fomori Nomad and Ruhan of the Fomori.

And if the Fomori are involved, I wonder if we'll be getting more cards based on Celtic folklore. I'd be interested to see cards based on the Tuatha.

Depending on how long ago their empire stood, they might have ruled in an era with planar portals and ships like the Weatherlight.

#10250: Apr 8th 2024 at 4:49:07 AM

And considering one of their treasures was a child whose mind contains a map of the multiverse that is updated live somehow since Loot's mind also contains all of the Omenpath routes, taking over multiple planes across the multiverse would be made even easier.

There's definitely a story to be told of how a multiversal empire of giants with that kind of magitek collapsed with the survivors becoming savage nomads.

One shudders to think how bad things would have gotten if one of the previous arcs' Big Bads like Nichol Bolas or Elesh Norn had found Loot.
