Remember the "I'm a PC, I'm a Mac" commercials from Apple? Well, Intel has hired the "I'm a Mac" guy to revive the commercials to bash Apple and praise PCs.

Here they are to jog your memory:

MS Word allows you to assign custom shortcut keys for special characters so that you don't have to memorize their code numbers. Is there a way to apply this outside of Word?

Chip shortage: Samsung warns of 'serious imbalance'.

    Article
Samsung, the world’s biggest computer-chip manufacturer, has warned of a “serious imbalance” in the semiconductor industry, as global shortages cause disruption.

It also said it might skip the launch of the next Galaxy Note smartphone, to streamline its lineup.

There are growing fears market shortages could slow economic recovery after coronavirus.

EU, US and Chinese governments are seeking to boost production.

“There’s a serious imbalance in supply and demand of chips in the IT sector globally,” Samsung's co-chief executive and mobile chief, Koh Dong-jin, said at a shareholder meeting.

"It is hard to say the shortage issue has been solved 100%."

Samsung was working with overseas partners to meet demand, he added.

Cancelled orders

The semiconductor shortage began last year, as the pandemic hit.

Suffering from poor sales, car manufacturers cut their orders from the Chinese factories making computer chips.

In response, the chip supply from factories was transferred to other sectors that had high demands.

And unable to retrieve cancelled orders when demand for cars grew, Volkswagen, Honda, Toyota and General Motors all had to reduce production.

'Working hard'

Meanwhile, as technology sales boomed, with people staying at home, the other sectors were also affected.

New graphics cards were scarce, Apple staggered the release of some iPhones, and the latest models of Xbox and PlayStation consoles are selling out each time a new stock is announced.

"The semiconductor manufacturers are working hard to fill the gaps in supply," Counterpoint Research partner Peter Richardson said.

"But it will take time before investment translates to more supply.

"This means that shortages for some products may continue for several months - possibly even in to 2022."

However, most consumers were unlikely to feel the impact, unless buying a new car, he added.

High-end model

Samsung's release of a new Galaxy Note smartphone may now be delayed until 2022, Mr Koh signalled.

As a high-end model, “it might be difficult to release”, he said.

Another popular model, the Samsung Galaxy S21, was launched in January.

“It could be a burden to unveil two flagship models in a year,” Mr Koh added.

Quilter Cheviot research analyst Ben Barringer said: "Growing trade tensions between the US and China put the semiconductor industry in uncertainty, even before the pandemic.

"This shortage illustrates how important certain countries have become in terms of supply chain - and how important access to semiconductors is."

And last month's closure of its chip-fabrication plant by adverse weather conditions in Texas had exacerbated Samsung's problems.

Taiwanese research firm TrendForce estimated the shutdown could reduce global smartphone production by 5% in the second quarter of this year.

"They are trying to differentiate between absolute demands and nice-to-haves," Mr Barringer added.

I have a problem with a new router/modem combo I got.

I just recently purchased a Netgear Nighthawk AC 1900 C7000 V2 cable modem/router combo. Got everything activated and ready to go, but when I checked, my PC and all of my devices told me the Wi Fi was "Connected, but no Internet." It even extended to my Ethernet cable where I could connect to the router and mess with the router gateway.

Even my ISP, Xfinity, was having issues. They could see the router, but also knew something was wrong. So, they sent out a technician. The tech found an issue with my cable lines, but they were also having the same issue and recommended me return it.

I did and after getting the exact same router/modem combo, I'm still having the exact same issue.

I want to try using this router/modem combo, but I need some help finding ways to fix it. Based on what I saw with the router gateway, the router can't get an IP address, if that helps.

Luckily, my old router modem combo (a Motorolola Arris Surfboard, which I have two of) still works and allows me online, so I can still do what I need to, but I want this one to work.

[up] I have a 5 year old Linksys router that serves me well - I can read the WIFI on my phone as I walk up to my apartment - at least 3 meters (9 ft) outside my door.

Netgear has....issues. I had to replace two Netgear routers that just died on me. NO WIFI, no response.

I switched to Linksys and never looked back.

Bloomberg: sources say Microsoft in talks to buy Discord for US$10 billion.

Microsoft Corp. is in talks to acquire Discord Inc., a video-game chat community, for more than $10 billion, according to people familiar with the matter.

Discord has been talking to potential buyers, and software giant Microsoft is in the running, but no deal is imminent, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the discussions are private. Discord is more likely to go public than sell itself, one person said. Representatives for Microsoft and Discord declined to comment.

San Francisco-based Discord is best known for its free service that lets gamers communicate by video, voice and text, and people stuck at home during the pandemic have increasingly used its technology for study groups, dance classes, book clubs and other virtual gatherings. Microsoft, which last year sought to buy social-media app Tik Tok and held talks to acquire Pinterest Inc., has been shopping for assets that would provide access to thriving communities of users, according to people familiar with the company’s thinking.

Discord reached out to Microsoft to gauge interest, and Microsoft Xbox chief Phil Spencer has been talking to the company, according to one person. Venture Beat reported earlier on Monday that Discord was in talks to sell itself. The company raised $100 million at a $7 billion valuation last year, according to Pitchbook.

Discord has also held discussions with Epic Games Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. in the past, according to two people familiar with the matter. Epic and Amazon didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

From the German politics thread: So it looks like a party close to coronavirus denier movements had private data of thousands of their members taken.

The key word being "taken" and not "hacked" - apparently they hadn't bothered to do the minimum amount of IT security and had allowed anyone with the URL to access the unencrypted file directories containing private information on their members. Which means that the party probably broke data safety guidelines.

I am posting this here because the hackers who did it claimed that nobody had ever made it this easy and to me it looks like totally inept IT security.

.. They set the access permissions to "all"..

That. Uhm. What? Those default to user! You actively have to change them for the files and directories you want public facing, it is not something you can do by accident. Did they not pay their sysadmin or something?

I think the worse thing than bad file permissions is that these were internet accessible at all.

From the European Commission for a Europe fit for a Digital Age:

Our preliminary conclusion: @Apple is in breach of EU competition law. @Apple Music compete with other music streaming services. But @Apple charges high commission fees on rivals in the App store & forbids them to inform of alternative subscription options. Consumers losing out.

So, I’ve never posted here before, but looks like I need to now.

One of my laptops is giving me a “Can’t sign in into your account” error. I’ve made several attempts at fixing it, but nothing has worked. At this point, I was worried that my only option would be to copy what I could of my files over to a new profile, but as it turns out, I can’t find those files either in the spot where I’m told they should be. Does anyone have any way to help?
