I'm keeping calmish, but I'd love to do a co-op Shadowrun esque infiltration of a building, silent takedowns, hacking a node, then maybe stealing a van and blitzing across the city to escape.

It's a dream. I just hope they don't go with "deathmatch" but with powers...

CP 2020 was never about Player vs. player. Oh players may screw other players over but deathmatch was never part of the tabletop game.

I suspect that someone will mod it in and offer the mod on Steam, as people are wont to do, but CDPR should stick with a story based game. note

I don't want multiplayer. I have an expensive laptop and I don't need to hear 14 year olds cussing over my speakers.

An Cyberpunk online game sounds like a fun idea but I know the community of that kind of thing is going to get pretty bad really fast.

A problem for any electronic community. Are you a fan of erotic fiction? Someone will post something that churns your stomach - and soon their buddies will start posting more.

Fan of a game? Go to the 'boards, /vg/ or any site with comments and see the games racist/sexist/neckbeard Basement-Dweller fans shitposting.

There will always be the a-hole who think that because it's the Internet, they have a license to mix their shitty behavior with their fandom. What's worse is when they become the Internet Tough Guy when they are called out on it. Or screech "FREEE SPEECCH" when the community tries to have some standards.

Think of it as GIFT in action specifically for videogames.

**edit**

CDPR needs to police any add-ons for the PC. On the console it's easy to block people trying to put alt-right garbage up, but on Steam and other sites where fans try to download mods? They need to make sure that vile shit is kept off Steam and other sites like it. Let the alt-right go hide in their little corners of the 'net.

[up] Luckily I think modding will be prohibitively difficult to start with - the Witcher wasn't mod friendly, so there weren't that many out there. Think CB 2077 will be similar.

And a co-op / team based CB multiplayer game would be rapidly have immersion shattered by the bunny hoping people shrieking at you to "git gud" and all that.

It's why I'm glad that multiplayer seems a secondary concern and some form of standalone game. Because multiplayer goes non-canon and wacky fairly quickly. Especially if it's semi open world and the sort that can attract griefers...

I just don't get multiplayer outside of fighting games, MOBA or World of Warcraft style games.

I'd rather take in the story then have "Call of Modern Counterstrike 2077".[up]

I didn't know that the Witcher wasn't mod friendly.

Kudos to CD Projekt Red as 1/3 of Cyberpunk were pre-ordered from gog.com

[up] Tis good! I'd love the collectors edition but can't justify 275 quid on it... plus think they've all gone.

Still need to pre-order... except i am still leery about doing it (got burned with Anthem after all) - even though this looks like it'll be amazing.

A post on reddit has revealed that vital NPCs and children cannot be killed. Not surprising, since it's a huge pain in the ass to script certain plot events if you're a total homicidal maniac, and also because killing children would be the fastest ticket to an AO only rating.

...But guess what? Yep, some folks are complaining about CD Projekt Red getting cold feet, and how they'll just mod in the ability to kill kids once the game comes out. Christ, some people are truly warped...

I really don't see the point in killing vital NPC's.

They are kinda important for a reason. If they are not there you can't progress through the story.

Also while I like Villain Protagonists there has to be a line drawn. I will not root for a rapist or a child murderer.

Yeah; there have to be limits. The "total immersion crowd" probably need to get themselves checked out on that.

Fine, mod it in, so you can giggle about doing really unpleasant things.

Being Cyberpsycho and getting trounced by C-SWAT is a thing in universe, so kinda weird they want the limit. Sounds like you can be pretty extreme already. Sounds like an edgelord crowd of "libertarians" who feel there should be no restrictions. But c'est la vie.

And the "getting cold feet" comment seems weird, as if they HAD the option at the start. You couldn't do it in any Witcher game, there's no precedent here. Weird.

There are those who like the freedom of Morrowind, where you could legitimiately break the storyline by killing story-vital NPCs. But given how much time players tend to invest into such save files these days, I'm not surprised they removed that option in Oblivion and Skyrim, and given that CDPR's games are MORE story-focused, I'm not surprised at all that Cyberpunk won't be doing that.

I mean, it would be akin to having the option to kill Triss out of cutscene in the previous Witcher games. It would be silly. And with Morrowind, the game explicitly told you "you can't finish the game now" when you killed those NPCs, and no-one in 2019 or 2020 is going to release a AAA game that does that.

There has always been the PC vidya version of the "murderhobo" - any player who will lard up on ammo and shoot anything just so see what happens.

Some just get bored and do what they want - some are just assholes who want to see (virtual) children die.

I get what CDPR is doing, this is not GTA. There is a set script and the media would pounce with "YOU CAN KILL CHILDREN!!!" if they let the player kill any NPC.

Sure you could shoot the Captain in Halo but the programmers put in a But Thou Must! to keep players on the plot (and screw with the "bored now" players).

There will ALWAYS be a part of any fanbase that is GIFT made manifest.

Back in The '80s there were drooling Nazi fanboys in the scale model community. You couldn't throw a stone at a convention without hitting someone building a model or diorama of the Wehrmacht and/or someone selling "Secret Weapons of the THIRD RIECH". Gun forums of The '90s? Lots of Y2K and alt-right before it was alt-right.

I'm not surprised that CDPR's decision has brought out the crazy "fans" who want to murder everything they can see.

Hell tabletop DM's and GM's have kicked players out over behavior like this (see the entry on Counter Monkey for an example of the Spoony one dealing with asshole players).

The sad irony of the internet is that this lot are now more vocal and sometimes are seen as the mouthpiece of the fandom.

As if this option not being there limits their options in game, in what looks to be a fairly open ended sim already!

Ah well, hopefully it'll just die down. Some more talk on the starting backgrounds and how they'll influence speaking to certain characters and maybe how characters treat you. Corp, Street kid, nomad... not sure if they've added anymore in so far.

May go Corporate for a run, as that way you can be a rebellious teen...

Doesn't the different starting locations imply that not all the launch classes would be for the Samurai gang that V is part of?

[up][up]So far the opposite has happened. You were originally supposed to be able to choose your idol, be it Johnny Silverhand, one of the megacorp heads, or some other anarchist personality, but given how central Keanu Reeves is to playing Silverhand's character, I doubt that customization option still exists.

[up] Yeahh they've removed "Childhood hero" as an option, but appear to have different start options (similar to Dragon Age) and your personal backgrounds. They're still talking those up a bit.

As to how you start the game, as part of a gang - the Quest design lead has stated you start at different points in Night City depending on those choices. Not sure if V is in a gang unless they choose the "street kid" origin.

So, those "lifepaths" will seemingly influence quests, start location and dialogue options.

With the game's size I'm not really expecting to do much outside of the first act before being dropped entirely until the final quest.

Since the Cyberpunk: RED starter pack came out, IGN combed through the setting notes to see what happened in between 2020 and 2077.

Some things of note:

  • The United States Government nationalized Militech after the war, but essentially fell back to the Mississippi river. Night City and the rest of the Free State of Northern California were abandoned like in No Man's Land.
    • British Columbia seceded from Canada and joined the rest of the Pacific Northwest in a new "Pacifica Confederation", a kind of Cascadia++.
  • "RED" refers to "The Time of the Red", the immidiate aftermath of the Fourth Corporate War. Radioactive debris and residual chemical weapons floated into the atmosphere and made the air red for a while after.
  • Returning to its 2020 roots, this Cyberpunk RED features Night City as a vague Casablanca analogue. It would not be unreasonable to expect 2077 to follow the pattern.
  • There is a hidden nuke somewhere buried under the city, a very big one. It has been all but forgotten except by the highest echelons of Arasaka.
  • Biotechnica released genetically modified plants and animals nearby to try to stabilize the ecosystem. Because this is a piece of dystopian fiction, it can be presumed that this went badly.
  • Netrunning now requires Local Area Networks, as the NET has collapsed following the nuclear strike on Arasaka.
  • It is quite possible that Alt's "Soulkiller" virus is still lurking around.

I could spend hours reading Pondsmith and company's worldbuilding, its absolutely fascinating. As the world of RED is reusing old tech, I wonder if the microcassettes and other almost Cassette Futurist aspects of CP 2020 will show up? My other big question would be if biosculpting, one of the most interesting aspects of CP 2020 to me, will show up either?

The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -Fighteer

Biosculpting could be an interesting variation - wonder if that's, maybe, the higher end upgrades? Like low tech are bulky mech stuff, high tier are seamless, almost organic?

On another forum, someone was talking about how you can't just "break" the internet - too many server farms, etc. But I think they've overlooked how balkanised the USA is, let alone the rest of the world, so that international infrastructure just... isn't being maintained. I think he found the concept of a virus stopping internet access weird as you just need to disconnect the infected servers, purge etc. I'm not a network scientist, and I'm paraphrasing.

I may pick up the source book just to read it as the world is fascinating.

Cyberpunk 2020 is basically Mad Max, except they managed to save a good chunk of the infrastructure like Fallout's best areas.

By 2077, it's better off but that's pretty bad still.

Isn't that what the Maelstrom are...? (BAZINGA)

What, techno-obsessed people who want it all for themselves, unless its on their terms and are hyper aggressive to outsiders? Yeah, tenuous, but.

Hopefully new footage soon so we can feast. I find it amusing that a few website journos and commentators are calling the violence "a bit much" in some reports, getting squeamish about free choice, yet will have "top 10 kills" compilations on their website front pages for things like Dishonoured or Fortnite.

Not quite sure why that is - but I think CDPR need to show stuff beyond the combat (Yes, we had dialogue but not a great insight into how it works, or how conversations can be interrupted etc)

Back OT - the fact we can visit the wastelands will hopefully show how and why the cities are so effed up and really paint that, bad as they are, it could be so much worse.
