Yeah, this needs to go straight back to YKTTW.

Probably needed, yeah. Would Named The Rule After Him make a good name?

Bigotry will NEVER be welcome on TV Tropes.

Beats The Violator Rule.

I prefer The Violator Rule. Beyond the fact that most people don't think of Dave Gahan first and foremost with the word "violator," I think we open the trope back up to any instance where they name a law or rule after someone, not just instances where it's named to prevent actions like the person they're naming it after. Named The Rule After Him is too broad.

Feel free to add alternative suggestions to the crowner.

The link to your crowner doesn't work, Spark.

Well, my suggestions are all relating to a specific name... I just voted to rename on that crowner and will save all additions to a hopefully forthcoming rename crowner.

I see that it doesn't have a lot of wicks, and if the name appeared in front of me in floating letters of gold it wouldn't be immediately obvious what it was, but I only saw one even arguable misuse among the wicks it does have. Is it possible the trope doesn't crop up a lot? Is there any actual evidence that the poor showing is due to the name?

I think it's a fine trope — that a rule is named after the person whose actions made it necessary to have a rule — but the name is awful and it needs a lot more examples. Back to YKTTW with ye!

Actually, I admit, the first thing that popped to mind when I read the trope name, was the squirrel from Animaniacs.

[up]I thought it was advocating a particular brand of peanut butter.

(I think the squirrel in question is named Slappy, but maybe I'm mixing up my squirrels.)

@39 Skippy was Slappy's nephew.

Is this crowner ready to be called yet?

Leaving aside the question of who "Skippy" is, there seems to be a second problem with this name - "rules" is a bit ambiguous.

We have a consensus to rename, and at least two suggestions: The Violator Rule and Named The Rule After Him. Any other ideas? Or should we just slap(py) a crowner on this?

While we're at it, we should probably sort the examples (such as they are) by medium.

(Frankly, I think this could have done with another pass through YKTTW, but nobody bothered to add that option to the crowner. Oh well.)

Well, two suggested names is enough to run an alt.titles crowner, and we can always add more names there if we think of them. Surely that is better than having this thread time out and get locked.

You don't need TRS consensus to take an existing trope through YKTTW for more examples. It's not something that can hurt anything.

I thought taking a trope back through YKTTW involved deleting the current trope page, which would require a crowner?

^Not always. Using a YKTTW merely to gather examples to then add to the page, while not being strictly what YKTTW is for, is acceptable MacGyvering of YKTTW.

Okay.

Well, since we have consensus for the rename, are there any objections to Named The Rule After Him as the new trope title, with The Violater Rule as a redirect?

Named The Rule After Him seems a bit broad, as previously mentioned. Of our two choices, I prefer The Violator Rule, but I kind of keep hoping someone will suggest something even better.

eta: maybe Rule Named After Violator?
