[up] Excuse me but what is a smorgasbord?

Googling it up I find that it's a Swedish delicacy. I completely fail to see how that relates to the trope at hand, and I'm willing to bet that many users don't know what a "smorgas" is either.

It is essentially a Swedish buffet; a mishmash of different type of food put together. "Smorgasbord" is also a slang term to describe things in that metaphorical fashion. I do realize not everyone is familiar with the term but we could always explain where the trope name come from in the article like we have done with so many others.

A trope article that has to explain its name often becomes a bad one.

[up] I agree, and that is why we're renaming the trope in the first place.

Smorgasbord is a pretty well-established loanword in English, like 'schadenfreude' or 'cliché'. Not saying I like the name, but I don't think shooting it down because some people don't know what English words mean is a valid criticism.

The fact that it's a foreign loanword and an obscure metaphor is harder to justify. The real problem is the fact that someone who knows exactly what a smorgasbord is could look at that title and have no idea what it meant.

Yes, and it doesn't really mean this.

Yes, it's well established as a word meaning "a lot of different types of food." It's almost never used to refer to something that isn't food. Using a well defined word to mean something it doesn't normally mean is terrible for clarity.

Actually, I hardly ever hear it used to refer to food. The metaphorical definition is definitely very popular. Maybe this is a regional dialect thing.

This is all irrelevant though because it lost the vote.

Yes it did. Go rename the trope World of Weirdness so that we can get this closed.
